Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Handbook, National Squash Tennis Association, 1912-13 The game of Squash Tennis is an adaptation of the game of racquets to a small court with wood walls and a lawn tennis ball and bat, although both the bat and ball have now been specialized for this game. The small size and comparatively light construction of the courts enabled them to be built quickly and cheaply, and it was soon found that the game had a distinct character of its own and filled a real need in the world of sport. Squash Tennis, or Squash, is a game for winter evenings. Without claiming to rival any Of the great out door games, it Offers a real athletic exercise in conditions where otherwise only some such game as billiards or bowl ing would be available. It is played equally well by elec tric light or by daylight, and in a court but little larger than an ordinary room. With all this, it is a game worthy of any man's best efiorts; one the possibilities of which have never been approached. It is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, of all games, and it is sufficiently strenuous to satisfy a normal craving for exercise in half an hour; it is the best practice for eye and hand to keep a tennis player in form through the winter, with variety enough to prevent him from going stale. It is not surprising therefore, that squash courts have been built in large numbers at city and country clubs, and that interest in the game is constantly increasing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive study, and social history, of the development of sports medicine in Britain, as practiced by British doctors and on British athletes in national and international settings. It takes as its focus the changing medical concept of the ‘athletic body’. Athletes start the century as normal, healthy citizens, and end up as potentially unhealthy physiological ‘freaks’, while the general public are increasingly urged to do more exercise and play more sports. It also considers the origins and history of all the major institutions and organisations of British sports medicine, and shows how they interacted with and influenced international sports medicine and sporting events. As well as being an important read for anyone interested in ‘body history’, this volume will be essential reading for those studying or researching the history of modern medicine, sports, or twentieth century Britain more generally.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes incredible stories of science, history, finance, mythology, the arts, medicine, and more, as told by the Periodic Table. Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) the go-to element for laboratory pranksters? The Periodic Table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it's also a treasure trove of adventure, betrayal, and obsession. These fascinating tales follow every element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, and in the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. The Disappearing Spoon masterfully fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, and discovery -- from the Big Bang through the end of time. Though solid at room temperature, gallium is a moldable metal that melts at 84 degrees Fahrenheit. A classic science prank is to mold gallium spoons, serve them with tea, and watch guests recoil as their utensils disappear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of the Collected Works of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi represents his work on Art and Creativity. Starting with his seminal 1964 study on creativity up to his 2010 publication in Newsweek, the volume spans over four decades of research and writing and clearly shows Csikszentmihalyi’s own development as an academic, psychologist, researcher and person. Unconventional and unorthodox in his approach, Csikszentmihalyi chose the topic of creativity as a field of study believing it would help him be a better psychologist and advance his understanding of how to live a better life. The chapters in this volume trace the history of the study of creativity back to the days of Guilford and research on IQ and Jacob Getzels’ work on creativity and intelligence. Firmly grounded in that history, yet extending it in new directions, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi started his life-long study on artistic creativity. His first extensive study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago enabled him to observe, test and interview fine art students drawing in a studio. The study formed the very basis of all his work on the subject and has resulted in several articles, represented in this volume, on such creativity-related concepts as problem solving versus problem finding, the personality of the artist, the influence of the social context, creativity as a social construction, developmental issues and flow. The main contribution to the topic of creativity and also the main concept explored in this volume, is the Systems Model of Creativity. Seven chapters in this volume discuss the development of this conceptual model and theory.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The classic work that predicted the anxieties of a world upended by rapidly emerging technologies—and now provides a road map to solving many of our most pressing crises. “Explosive . . . brilliantly formulated.” —The Wall Street Journal Future Shock is the classic that changed our view of tomorrow. Its startling insights into accelerating change led a president to ask his advisers for a special report, inspired composers to write symphonies and rock music, gave a powerful new concept to social science, and added a phrase to our language. Published in over fifty countries, Future Shock is the most important study of change and adaptation in our time. In many ways, Future Shock is about the present. It is about what is happening today to people and groups who are overwhelmed by change. Change affects our products, communities, organizations—even our patterns of friendship and love. But Future Shock also illuminates the world of tomorrow by exploding countless clichés about today. It vividly describes the emerging global civilization: the rise of new businesses, subcultures, lifestyles, and human relationships—all of them temporary. Future Shock will intrigue, provoke, frighten, encourage, and, above all, change everyone who reads it.

Book excerpt: This study of the curriculum for girls from the beginning of this century brings a fresh perspective to New Zealand educational history. Following the early triumphs of gaining the vote (and the right to qualify for university degrees), progress in women's education was not always straightforward. Social attitudes and provisions for girls at state schools in the first quarter-century established patterns for later generations to inherit and modify. In some areas, such as science and mathematics, inequalities for Maori girls lingered. Using a wide range of resources, ruth Fry traces the origin and development of the curriculum for girls to 1975, International Women's year. Those who, in 1893, achieved success in their campaign for equal voting rights were also concerned about educational opportunities for women. NZCER is very pleased to reissue It's different for daughters to celebrate the Centenary of Women's Suffrage in New Zealand.
