Book excerpt: Innovatively linking actual implementation to ratification of International Labour Office (ILO) Core Conventions, the author develops a new method and uses unexploited data from the ILO's supervisory system to rate the achievement of basic human rights in the world of work - freedom of association and freedom from forced labour, child labour and discrimination - for 159 countries during the period 1985-2003. It will appeal to the human and labour rights communities as well as to social scientists interested in indicators or international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive biography of the great French essayist and thinker One of the most important writers and thinkers of the Renaissance, Michel de Montaigne (1533–92) helped invent a literary genre that seemed more modern than anything that had come before. But did he do it, as he suggests in his Essays, by retreating to his chateau and stoically detaching himself from his violent times? Philippe Desan overturns this long standing myth by showing that Montaigne was constantly connected to and concerned with realizing his political ambitions—and that the literary and philosophical character of the Essays largely depends on them. Desan shows how Montaigne conceived of each edition of the Essays as an indispensable prerequisite to the next stage of his public career. It was only after his political failure that Montaigne took refuge in literature, and even then it was his political experience that enabled him to find the right tone for his genre. The most comprehensive and authoritative biography of Montaigne yet written, this sweeping narrative offers a fascinating new picture of his life and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Beyond the Jordan' is a collection of essays written to honor the life and labors of W. Harold Mare. Dr. Mare spent much of his academic career as Professor of New Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. A man of indefatigable energy, broad interests, and an unswerving commitment to the Christian faith, his research expanded from New Testament interests to the archaeology of that world, including ancient Canaan and Israel as well as the eras following the establishment of Christianity. Apart from his work in textual studies, W. Harold Mare will be remembered for his excavations of Abila of the Decapolis in Jordan, yet he also published a study of the archaeology of Jerusalem. Thus the title of this volume is ambiguous enough to allow a broad spectrum of topics relative to either side of the River Jordan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an answer to the question of why modern legal institutions and the idea of citizenship are important for leading a free life. The majority of views in political and legal philosophy regard the law merely as a useful instrument, employed to render our lives more secure and to enable us to engage in cooperate activities more efficiently. The view developed here defends a non-instrumentalist alternative of why the law matters. It identifies the law as a constitutive feature of our identities as citizens of modern states. The constitutivist argument rests on the (Kantian) assumption that a person’s practical identity (its normative self-conception as an agent) is the result of its actions. The law co-constitutes these identities because it maintains the external conditions that are necessary for the actions performed under its authority. Modern legal institutions provide these external prerequisites for achieving a high degree of individual self-constitution and freedom. Only public principles can establish our status as individuals who pursue their life plans and actions as a matter of right and not because others contingently happen to let us do so. The book thereby provides resources for a reply to anarchist challenges to the necessity of legal ordering.
