Book excerpt: "This report estimates losses from earthquakes that could occur near thirty-eight Nevada communities, including all county seats and major population centers. The report uses the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s sophisticated loss-estimation computer model, HAZUS-MH, to estimate such factors as total economic loss, numbers of buildings receiving extensive to complete damage, number of people needing public shelter and hospital care, and number of fatalities from earthquakes of magnitude 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. The report also tabulates earthquake probabilities for these communities from the U.S. Geological Survey’s probabilistic seismic hazard analysis."--Page 2

Book excerpt: A program called HAZUS-MH (Hazards U.S. - Multi-Hazard) developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can estimate losses from natural disasters such as earthquakes. A strong earthquake in Colorado would be comparable to Hurricane Katrina considering the lack of government preparedness and the myriad of unforeseen consequences brought on by such a large-scale event. Earthquakes can be major disasters, and they pose a very real threat to many areas of Colorado. The first step towards preparedness is to create awareness of what could happen - that is what this report seeks to accomplish.

This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent earthquakes around the world show a pattern of steadily increasing damages and losses that are due primarily to two factors: (1) significant growth in earthquake-prone urban areas and (2) vulnerability of the older building stock, including buildings constructed within the past 20 years. In the United States, earthquake risk has grown substantially with development while the earthquake hazard has remained relatively constant. Understanding the hazard requires studying earthquake characteristics and locales in which they occur while understanding the risk requires an assessment of the potential damage to the built environment and to the welfare of people - especially in high risk areas. Estimating the varying degree of earthquake risk throughout the United States is useful for informed decision-making on mitigation policies, priorities, strategies, and funding levels in the public and private sectors. For example, potential losses to new buildings may be reduced by applying seismic design codes and using specialized construction techniques. However, decisions to spend money on either of those solutions require evidence of risk. In the absence of a nationally accepted criterion and methodology for comparing seismic risk across regions, a consensus on optimal mitigation approaches has been difficult to reach. While there is a good understanding of high risk areas such as Los Angeles, there is also growing recognition that other regions such as New York City and Boston have a low earthquake hazard but are still at high risk of significant damage and loss. This high risk level reflects the dense concentrations of buildings and infrastructure in these areas constructed without the benefit of modern seismic design provisions. In addition, mitigation policies and practices may not have been adopted because the earthquake risk was not clearly demonstrated and the value of using mitigation measures in reducing that risk may not have been understood. This study highlights the impacts of both high risk and high exposure on losses caused by earthquakes. It is based on loss estimates generated by HAZUS(R)-MH, a geographic information system (GIS)-based earthquake loss estimation tool developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). The HAZUS tool provides a method for quantifying future earthquake losses. It is national in scope, uniform in application, and comprehensive in its coverage of the built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript sets out a process for estimating fatalities in collapsed buildings due to ground shaking in an earthquake. The aim of this research is to supplement current earthquake loss estimation with fatality rates (percentage of occupants killed) for use in models which are based on recent empirical information on deaths from earthquakes. This document specifically explores the lethality potential to occupants of collapsed structures. Whilst earthquake casualty modeling has admittedly suffered from a lack of post-earthquake collection of data and rigour in assessing these data, recent earthquakes such as 2008 Wenchuan (China) and 2011 Christchurch (New Zealand) have brought to light some important findings. Under the auspices of US Geological Survey’s PAGER, empirical fatality data related to collapses of buildings from significant earthquakes in the past 40 years have been thoroughly examined. Through detailed investigations of fatal building collapses and the volume reductions within these buildings, important clues related to the lethality potential of different failure mechanisms of global modern and older construction types were found. The gathered evidence forms the basis of the derivation of a set of fatality rates for use in loss models. The set of judgment-based rates are for 31 global building types. This significant advancement in casualty modeling, the resolutions and quality of available data, the important assumptions made, and the final derivation of fatality rates are discussed here. This document contributes to global efforts to develop a way of estimating probable earthquake fatalities very rapidly after an earthquake has taken place. The fatality rates proposed here can be incorporated directly into earthquake loss estimation models where fatalities are derived from collapses of different types of buildings.

Book excerpt: This manual was created for Canadian GIS users who want to run an earthquake loss estimation scenario using Hazus Canada. Hazus was developed by the US National Institute of Building Science (NIBS), in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to provide a national standard methodology for modelling the potential physical, economic and social impacts from earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. Hazus outputs and analyses have many applications and have been used in a variety of sectors, including the insurance, geotechnical engineering, emergency management, city planning, and building planning sectors. This guide assists the user in running an analysis for an earthquake hazard scenario in Canada. The guide is intended to be used as a complement to existing Hazus guides published by FEMA and available online. This document provides guidance on differences and adaptations for the Canadian user and provides support to enable the running of Hazus in a Canadian study area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I compare loss estimates for a range of earthquake scenarios and built environment models for municipalities in Greater Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, using Hazards United States Multi-Hazard version 2.1 (HAZUS) software. Best-estimate losses use region-specific site-condition maps and built-environment inventories updated with municipal assessment information for five scenarios representing subduction-interface, shallow-crustal, and in-slab earthquake types. Losses are higher for a major, near-source, shallow-crustal event than for larger magnitude, great subduction-interface earthquakes. Loss estimates differ by two to three orders of magnitude depending on the source scenario. Site-condition mapping and built-environment updates also significantly affect loss estimates (differences of up to 600% and 450%, respectively), depending on the scenario and loss metric under consideration.
