Book excerpt: "This report documents the before-deployment to the Sinai, a peacekeeping operation that comprised troops from the Reserve Component (RC) as well as the Active Component (AC). Before deploying, 503 soldiers completed surveys developed by the U.S. Army Research institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences that contained items covering a broad range of demographic and attitudinal variables. The findings of this report concern the reasons RC soldiers gave for volunteering; the expected effects of the deployment on the lives of all soldiers; and all deployees before-deploying educational aspirations, career intentions, organizational commitment, and marital/family status. RC soldiers' reasons for volunteering involved adventure, career challenge, advancement, and patriotism. The entire sample of soldiers expected the deployment to have positive effects on various aspects of their lives, especially their physical health and their military careers. Levels of organizational commitment and career intentions were high across the entire sample. Married soldiers reported high marital satisfaction and high levels of spouse support for the deployment. Differences among subgroups tended to be small, although RC soldiers were generally more positive than AC soldiers, and officers were more positive than enlisted personnel. There were few substantive differences among the soldiers on the variables examined. The authors conclude that before deployment status on the selected variables is roughly equivalent for the entire sample of deployees across both components (RC and AC) and all three rank levels (junior enlisted personnel, noncommissioned officers, and officers."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Scholarship on Plato's dialogues persistently divides its focus between the dramatic or literary and the philosophical or argumentative dimensions of the texts. But this hermeneutic division of labor is naïve, for Plato's arguments are embedded in dramatic dialogues and developed through complex, largely informal exchanges between literary characters. Consequently, it is questionable how readers can even attribute arguments and theses to the author himself. The answer to this question lies in transcending the scholarly divide and integrating the literary and philosophical dimensions of the texts. This is the task of Trials of Reason. The study focuses on a set of fourteen so-called early dialogues, beginning with a methodological framework that explains how to integrate the argumentation and the drama in these texts. Unlike most canonical philosophical works, the early dialogues do not merely express the results of the practice of philosophy. Rather, they dramatize philosophy as a kind of motivation, the desire for knowledge of goodness. They dramatize philosophy as a discursive practice, motivated by this desire and ideally governed by reason. And they dramatize the trials to which desire and reason are subject, that is, the difficulties of realizing philosophy as a form of motivation, a practice, and an epistemic achievement. In short, Trials of Reason argues that Plato's early dialogues are as much works of meta-philosophy as philosophy itself.

Indeed, just as our reason demands that we know the truth, our skepticism leads to doubts we can ever really do so. In Walking the Tightrope of Reason, Robert J. Fogelin guides readers through a contradiction that lies at the very heart of philosophical inquiry. Fogelin argues that our rational faculties insist on a purely rational account of the universe, yet at the same time, the inherent limitations of these faculties ensure that we will never fully satisfy that demand. As a result of being driven to this point of paradox, we either comfort ourselves with what Kant called "metaphysical illusions" or adopt a stance of radical skepticism. No middle ground seems possible and, as Fogelin shows, skepticism, even though a healthy dose of it is essential for living a rational life, "has an inherent tendency to become unlimited in its scope, with the result that the edifice of rationality is destroyed." In much Postmodernist thought, for example, skepticism takes the extreme form of absolute relativism, denying the basis for any value distinctions and treating all truth-claims as equally groundless. How reason avoids disgracing itself, walking a fine line between dogmatic belief and self-defeating doubt, is the question Fogelin seeks to answer. Reflecting upon the ancient Greek skeptics as well as such thinkers as Hume, Kant, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, and Whitman, this book takes readers into--and through--some of philosophy's most troubling paradoxes.
