This book was released on 1992 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental inquiry into the utility of discontinuous bumpers was conducted to investigate the collisional outcomes of impacts into single grid-like targets and to compare the results with more traditional bumper designs that employ continuous sheet stock. We performed some 35 experiments using 6.3 and 3.2 mm diameter spherical soda-lime glass projectiles at low velocities (less than 2.5 km/s) and 13 at velocities between 5 and 6 km/s, using 3.2 mm spheres only. The thrust of the experiments related to the characterization of collisional fragments as a function of target thickness or areal shield mass of both bumper designs.
Book Synopsis Global Optimization with Non-Convex Constraints by : Roman G. Strongin

This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. (Albert Einstein, Readers Digest, 1977) The modern practice of creating technical systems and technological processes of high effi.ciency besides the employment of new principles, new materials, new physical effects and other new solutions ( which is very traditional and plays the key role in the selection of the general structure of the object to be designed) also includes the choice of the best combination for the set of parameters (geometrical sizes, electrical and strength characteristics, etc.) concretizing this general structure, because the Variation of these parameters ( with the structure or linkage being already set defined) can essentially affect the objective performance indexes. The mathematical tools for choosing these best combinations are exactly what is this book about. With the advent of computers and the computer-aided design the pro bations of the selected variants are usually performed not for the real examples ( this may require some very expensive building of sample op tions and of the special installations to test them ), but by the analysis of the corresponding mathematical models. The sophistication of the mathematical models for the objects to be designed, which is the natu ral consequence of the raising complexity of these objects, greatly com plicates the objective performance analysis. Today, the main (and very often the only) available instrument for such an analysis is computer aided simulation of an object's behavior, based on numerical experiments with its mathematical model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface between syntax and meaning, both semantic and pragmatic, has emerged as perhaps the richest and most fascinating area of current linguistics theory. This study applies some of these ideas to hyperbaton, offering an original new theory with broad applications for our understanding of Greek syntax. Students of epic will find a fresh perspective on orality in Homer while the general classicist will discover a more precise and explicit framework for the analysis of textual meaning in literary research.
Book Synopsis Spline Functions and the Theory of Wavelets by : Serge Dubuc
Download or read book Spline Functions and the Theory of Wavelets written by Serge Dubuc and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is based on a series of thematic workshops on the theory of wavelets and the theory of splines. Important applications are included. The volume is divided into four parts: Spline Functions, Theory of Wavelets, Wavelets in Physics, and Splines and Wavelets in Statistics. Part one presents the broad spectrum of current research in the theory and applications of spline functions. Theory ranges from classical univariate spline approximation to an abstract framework for multivariate spline interpolation. Applications include scattered-data interpolation, differential equations and various techniques in CAGD. Part two considers two developments in subdivision schemes; one for uniform regularity and the other for irregular situations. The latter includes construction of multidimensional wavelet bases and determination of bases with a given time frequency localization. In part three, the multifractal formalism is extended to fractal functions involving oscillating singularites. There is a review of a method of quantization of classical systems based on the theory of coherent states. Wavelets are applied in the domains of atomic, molecular and condensed-matter physics. In part four, ways in which wavelets can be used to solve important function estimation problems in statistics are shown. Different wavelet estimators are proposed in the following distinct cases: functions with discontinuities, errors that are no longer Gaussian, wavelet estimation with robustness, and error distribution that is no longer stationary. Some of the contributions in this volume are current research results not previously available in monograph form. The volume features many applications and interesting new theoretical developments. Readers will find powerful methods for studying irregularities in mathematics, physics, and statistics.
Book Synopsis The Buddha’s Teaching by : G. A. Somaratne
Download or read book The Buddha’s Teaching written by G. A. Somaratne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches the Dhamma, the Buddha’s teaching, from a Buddhistic perspective, viewing various individual teachings presented in hundreds of early discourses of Pali canon, comprehending them under a single systemic thought of a single individual called the Buddha. It explicates the structure of this thought, going through various contextual teachings and teaching categories of the discourses, treating them as necessary parts of a liberating thought that constitutes the right view of one who embraces the Buddha’s teaching as his or her sole philosophy of life. It interprets the diverse individual dhammas as being in congruence with each other; and as contributory to forming the whole of the Buddha’s teaching, the Dhamma. By exploring some selected topics such as ignorance, configurations, not-self, and nibbāna in thirteen chapters, the book enables readers to understand the whole (the Dhamma) in relation to the parts (the dhammas), and the parts in relation to the whole, while realizing the importance of studying every single dhamma category or topic not for its own sake but for understand the entirety of the teaching. This way of viewing and explaining the teachings of the discourses enables readers to clearly comprehend the teaching of the Buddha in early Buddhism.
Book Synopsis Applied Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos Of Mechanical Systems With Discontinuities by : Bram De Kraker
Download or read book Applied Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos Of Mechanical Systems With Discontinuities written by Bram De Kraker and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-04-28 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid developments in nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory have led to publication of many valuable monographs and books. However, most of these texts are devoted to the classical nonlinear dynamics systems, for example the Duffing or van der Pol oscillators, and either neglect or refer only briefly to systems with motion-dependent discontinuities. In engineering practice a good part of problems is discontinuous in nature, due to either deliberate reasons such as the introduction of working clearance, and/or the finite accuracy of the manufacturing processes. The main objective of this volume is to provide a general methodology for describing, solving and analysing discontinuous systems. It is compiled from the dedicated contributions written by experts in the field of applied nonlinear dynamics and chaos. The main focus is on mechanical engineering problems where clearances, piecewise stiffness, intermittent contact, variable friction or other forms of discontinuity occur. Practical applications include vibration absorbers, percussive drilling of hard materials and dynamics of metal cutting.
Book Synopsis Continuities and Discontinuities in Development by : Robert N. Emde
Download or read book Continuities and Discontinuities in Development written by Robert N. Emde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Continuities and Discontinuities in Development" was the theme for the Second Biennial DPRG Retreat, a three-day meeting held at Estes Park, Colorado, in June 1982. The meeting was sponsored by the Devel opmental Psychobiology Research Group (DPRG) of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The DPRG is a group of individuals conducting research in many areas of develop ment who meet on a regular basis to present and discuss their work and receive feedback and encouragement. In 1974, this group was awarded an endowment fund by the Grant Foundation, the aims of which were to facilitate the research of young investigators, to encourage new re search, and to provide seed money for collaborative ventures. Much of the work reported in this volume and in the earlier volume from the First DPRG Retreat is the result of that support. In addition to the work of the members of the DPRG, a select group of guests was invited to participate in the meeting and contribute to this volume. The chapters by William Greenough, Jerome Kagan, and Michael Rutter result from the participation of these scholars at the retreat. We would like to acknowledge the support of a number of indi viduals who have been instrumental in supporting the DPRG as a whole, as well as those who contributed directly to the Second Biennial Retreat and to the volume.

Book Synopsis Sensor Modelling, Design And Data Processing For Autonomous Navigation by : Martin David Adams
Download or read book Sensor Modelling, Design And Data Processing For Autonomous Navigation written by Martin David Adams and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-02-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book presents an unbiased framework for modelling and using sensors to aid mobile robot navigation. It addresses the problem of accurate and reliable sensing in confined environments and makes a detailed analysis of the design and construction of a low cost optical range finder. This is followed by a quantitative model for determining the sources and propagation of noise within the sensor. The physics behind the causes of erroneous data is also used to derive a model for detecting and labelling such data as false. In addition, the author's data-processing algorithms are applied to the problem of environmental feature extraction. This forms the basis of a solution to the problem of mobile robot localisation. The book develops a relationship between the kinematics of a mobile robot during the execution of successive manoeuvres, and the sensed features. Results which update a mobile vehicle's position using features from 2D and 3D scans are presented.
Book Synopsis Modeling in Computer Graphics by : Bianca Falcidieno
Download or read book Modeling in Computer Graphics written by Bianca Falcidieno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of technology, many fields have passed from an initial stage of empirical recipes to a mature stage where work is based on formal theories and procedures. This transition is made possible through a process called "modeling". Also Computer Graphics as a separate field of Computer Science makes extensive use of formal theories and procedures of modeling, often derived from related disciplines such as mathematics and physics. Modeling makes different application results consistent, unifying varieties of techniques and formal approaches into a smaller number of models by generalizing and abstracting the knowledge in Computer Graphics. This volume presents a selection of research papers submitted to the conference "Modeling in Computer Graphics: Methods and Applications" held at the Research Area of the National Research Council in Genoa, Italy, on June 28 -July 1, 1993. This meeting was the ideal continuation of a previous conference organized in Tokyo, Japan, in April 1991. The success and the variety of research themes discussed at that meeting suggested to promote a new working conference on methods and applications of modeling to be held in Italy two years later.
