Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year A Chicago Public Library Best of the Best of the Year "Profoundly moving . . . Will take your breath away." —Kathleen Glasgow, author of Girl in Pieces A stunningly gorgeous and deeply hopeful portrayal of living with mental illness and grief, from an exceptional new voice. Biz knows how to float. She has her people, her posse, her mom and the twins. She has Grace. And she has her dad, who tells her about the little kid she was, and who shouldn't be here but is. So Biz doesn't tell anyone anything. Not about her dark, runaway thoughts, not about kissing Grace or noticing Jasper, the new boy. And she doesn't tell anyone about her dad. Because her dad died when she was seven. And Biz knows how to float, right there on the surface—normal okay regular fine. But after what happens on the beach—first in the ocean, and then in the sand—the tethers that hold Biz steady come undone. Dad disappears and, with him, all comfort. It might be easier, better, sweeter to float all the way away? Or maybe stay a little longer, find her father, bring him back to her. Or maybe—maybe maybe maybe—there's a third way Biz just can't see yet. Debut author Helena Fox tells a story about love and grief, about inter-generational mental illness, and how living with it is both a bridge to someone loved and lost and, also, a chasm. She explores the hard and beautiful places loss can take us, and honors those who hold us tightly when the current wants to tug us out to sea. "Give this to all [your] friends immediately." —Cosmopolitan.com "I haven't been so dazzled by a YA in ages." —Jandy Nelson, author of I'll Give You the Sun (via SLJ) "Mesmerizing and timely." —Bustle "Nothing short of exquisite." —PopSugar "Immensely satisfying" —Girls' Life * "Lyrical and profoundly affecting." —Kirkus (starred review) * "Masterful...Just beautiful." —Booklist (starred review) * "Intimate...Unexpected." —PW (starred review) * "Fox writes with superb understanding and tenderness." —BCCB (starred review) * "Frank [and] beautifully crafted." —BookPage (starred review) "Deeply moving...A story of hope." —Common Sense Media "This book will explode you into atoms." —Margo Lanagan, author of Tender Morsels "Helena Fox's novel delivers. Read it." —Cath Crowley, author of Words in Deep Blue "This is not a book; it is a work of art." —Kerry Kletter, author of The First Time She Drowned "Perfect...Readers will be deeply moved." —Books+Publishing

Book excerpt: A reflective collection of poetry, Fall Leaves Float opens the door to life and invites us into the experiential journey. From the musty feel of an old library brought to life in Brittle Pages to the poignant wistfulness of A Fathers Wish, poet Darrin Kramer has a unique command of the human condition. He pleads with us to ponder the real meaning and significance of our very existence. We are reminded to appreciate the life we have been given and encouraged to never give up in the face of obstacles. Through his poetic imagery, we are taken on a celestial journey through magnificent visual picture dreams. Fall Leaves Float enables us to visualize what listening to silence really means, and we are shown the depth and complexity of love. By filling empty space with thought, light, word, and meaning, Kramer allows us to pause and reflect upon our lives. Darrin Kramers poetry frequently guides you on an unanticipated end point. A persons facial reflection or twinkling eyes, a kiss, snow in winter or the path of a floating leaf. These are some of the visual images his prose conjures up. His writing style is free, loose, upbuilding and sure to prompt you to continue reading to completion as I did. Frankie Gilliam Harrison, physical therapist Your work conveys lovely thoughts and is very mood-invoking. Stephanie Hewitt, customer service

Book excerpt: The author of Mongrels and the author of The Cabin at the End of the World team up to tell a quirky and uplifting fantasy “that will enthrall young teens” (School Library Journal). Things Mary doesn’t want to fall into: the river, high school, her mother’s life. Things Mary does kind of want to fall into: love, the sky. This is the story of a girl who sees a boy float away one fine day. This is the story of the girl who reaches up for that boy with her hand and with her heart. This is the story of a girl who takes on the army to save a town, who goes toe-to-toe with a mad scientist, who has to fight a plague to save her family. This is the story of a girl who would give anything to get to babysit her baby brother one more time. If she could just find him. It’s all up in the air for now, though, and falling fast . . . Fun, breathlessly exciting, and full of heart, Floating Boy and the Girl Who Couldn’t Fly is an unforgettable ride. “Straddles the border between magic realism and weird science . . . an entertaining, thoughtful piece.” —Publishers Weekly “Absolutely adorable . . . The plot was fast paced and driven and it kept me intrigued until the very end. It was [a] really light, easy read.” —Read Rant Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insists on the importance of embodiment and movement to the creation of Black sociality Linking African diasporic performance, disability studies, and movement studies, Falling, Floating, Flickering approaches disability transnationally by centering Black, African, and diasporic experiences. By eschewing capital’s weighted calculus of which bodies hold value, this book centers alternate morphologies and movement practices that have previously been dismissed as abnormal or unrecognizable. To move beyond binaries of ability, Hershini Bhana Young traverses multiple geohistories and cultural forms stretching from the United States and the Mediterranean to Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and South Africa, as well as independent and experimental film, novels, sculptures, images, dance, performances, and anecdotes. In doing so, she argues for the importance of differential embodiment and movement to the creation and survival of Black sociality, and refutes stereotypic notions of Africa as less progressive than the West in recognizing the rights of disabled people. Ultimately, this book foregrounds the engagement of diasporic Africans, who are still reeling from the violence of colonialism, slavery, poverty, and war, as they gesture toward a liberatory Black sociality by falling, floating, and flickering.

[sorry] * Is your head stuck in a constant spin cycle? * Do you feel like your anxiety runs the show? [sorry, again] Got anxiety? Join the club. More specifically, join the Anxiety Sisterhood. Abs and Mags, aka the Anxiety Sisters, have spent the past thirty years figuring out how to outsmart their anxiety-ridden brains, and the last five years sharing what they've learned with a growing online community of like-minded sufferers who are looking for ways to cope better every day. Whether you're looking to better understand and manage panic, worry, grief, stress or phobias, or just want to pause the endless churning in your head, you'll find real-world, relatable, research-based techniques, exercises, and insights - without the clinical, one-size-fits-all approach that isn't helpful when your mind is racing, your triggers are in overdrive, and you just want to get back to feeling normal (you'd settle for normal-ish, tbh). Most of all, this is a handbook for fighting Shrinking World Syndrome - that isolating, lonely feeling that comes from letting your anxiety run the show. The stories and suggestions in this book will remind you that you're not alone. You don't have to eliminate anxiety from your life in order to feel okay and maybe even (whisper it) happy.

Book excerpt: Book & DVD. From the Space Shuttle, to Soyuz, to Spaceship One, riding the explosion at the bottom of a rocket has historically been the only path to space. Is there another way? "Floating to Space" in an overview of the new technology of space-bound airships. What, the Goodyear blimp goes to Mars? Yes! The technology called ATO, "Airship to Orbit" is being developed right now. Hypersonic airships and cities floating at the edge of space are all part of this seemingly impossible idea. Beyond describing the concept, this book shows the amazing adventure of those who are building these giant craft and throwing them into the sky. Not just a fantasy, this book shows photographs and details from the nearly one hundred development flights conducted so far. . . Included are descriptions of the environment where these craft fly to the edge of space. New findings such as life twenty miles up and mile high plasma volcanoes are introduced for the first time outside of scientific journals. This book shows you how ATO is to be accomplished from a project and economic prospective. It also details the progress so far and lays out a blueprint of what is to come. Includes a DVD of remarkable footage taken during the many test flights of JP Aerospace's unique experiments floating to space.

Travis also begins to overcome the darkness of his childhood and the guilt he’s harbored since his younger brother’s death—a tragic drowning veiled in mystery that has plagued Travis since he was 13. Soon, though, the new house begins to lose its allure. Strange noises wake Travis at night, and his dreams are plagued by ghosts. Barely glimpsed shapes flit through the darkened hallways, but strangest of all is the bizarre set of wooden stairs that rises cryptically out of the lake behind the house. Travis becomes drawn to the structure, but the more he investigates, the more he uncovers the house’s violent and tragic past, and the more he learns that some secrets cannot be buried forever.

Book excerpt: From the gifted author of A Little Piece of Sky: The poignant tale of a young woman who must come to terms with her biracial identity. Shana Washington is the product of two very different worlds. Her white mother is a socialite with an Ivy League education; Shana’s black father has a weakness for whiskey and can’t stay faithful to any woman, but when his daughter is in peril, he always finds a way to rescue her. Hauntingly evoking the worlds represented by these three characters, Floating follows the life of Shana as she seeks acceptance—and wholeness—from white and black communities that both turn her away. When she begins a college romance with Lionel, a handsome track star with bronze-colored skin, her dreams of finding a soulmate seem tantalizingly close to coming true. Yet Lionel’s childhood demons are even more vicious than Shana’s, threatening the fragile love they can’t admit to needing. Tracing the themes of identity, healing, and self-acceptance that won such acclaim for her debut novel, Nicole Bailey-Williams now shares a provocative new storyline for anyone who has faith in the power of self-discovery.
