Book Synopsis The École Royale Militaire by : Haroldo A. Guízar
Download or read book The École Royale Militaire written by Haroldo A. Guízar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Paris Ecole Militaire as an institution, arguing for its importance as a school that presented itself as a model for reform during a key moment in the movement towards military professionalism as well as state-run secular education. The school is distinguished for being an Enlightenment project, one of its founders publishing an article on it in the Encyclopédie in 1755. Its curriculum broke completely with the Latin pedagogy of the dominant Jesuit system, while adapting the legacy of seventeenth-century riding academies. Its status touches on the nature of absolutism, as it was conceived to glorify the Bourbon dynasty in a similar way to the girls’ school at Saint Cyr and the Invalides. It was also a dispensary of royal charity calculated to ally the nobility more closely to royal interests through military service. In the army, its proofs of nobility were the model for the much debated 1781 Ségur decree, often described as a notable cause of the French Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Julien-David Leroy and the Making of Architectural History by : Christopher Drew Armstrong
Download or read book Julien-David Leroy and the Making of Architectural History written by Christopher Drew Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the career and publications of the French architect Julien-David Leroy (1724–1803) and his impact on architectural theory and pedagogy. Despite not leaving any built work, Leroy is a major international figure of eighteenth-century architectural theory and culture. Considering the place that Leroy occupied in various intellectual circles of the Enlightenment and Revolutionary period, this book examines the sources for his ideas about architectural history and theory and defines his impact on subsequent architectural thought. This book will be of key interest to graduate students and scholars of Enlightenment-era architectural history.
Book Synopsis Educational Philosophy in the French Enlightenment by : Natasha Gill
Download or read book Educational Philosophy in the French Enlightenment written by Natasha Gill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Emile is still considered the central pedagogical text of the French Enlightenment, a myriad of lesser-known thinkers paved the way for Rousseau's masterpiece. Natasha Gill traces the arc of these thinkers as they sought to reveal the correlation between early childhood experiences and the success or failure of social and political relations, and set the terms for the modern debate about the influence of nature and nurture in individual growth and collective life. Gill offers a comprehensive analysis of the rich cross-fertilization between educational and philosophical thought in the French Enlightenment. She begins by showing how in Some Thoughts Concerning Education John Locke set the stage for the French debate by transposing key themes from his philosophy into an educational context. Her treatment of the abbé Claude Fleury, the rector of the University of Paris Charles Rollin, and Swiss educator Jean-Pierre de Crousaz illustrates the extent to which early Enlightenment theorists reevaluated childhood and learning methods on the basis of sensationist psychology. Etienne-Gabriel Morelly, usually studied as a marginal thinker in the history of utopian thought, is here revealed as the most important precursor to Rousseau, and the first theorist to claim education as the vehicle through which individual liberation, social harmony and political unity could be achieved. Gill concludes with an analysis of the educational-philosophical dispute between Helvétius and Rousseau, and traces the influence of pedagogical theory on the political debate surrounding the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1762.

Book Synopsis The Novels of Madame de Souza in Social and Political Perspective by : Kirsty Carpenter
Download or read book The Novels of Madame de Souza in Social and Political Perspective written by Kirsty Carpenter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame de Souza's seven major novels written in the period from 1794 to 1822 show the emergence of the female-authored French novel, and the novel's role as a vehicle for political ideas during the revolutionary period. The novels; Adèle de Sénange, Emilie et Alphonse, Charles et Marie, Eugénie et Mathilde, Eugène de Rothelin, Mademoiselle de Tournon, and La comtesse de Fargy, make an important contribution to early nineteenth-century French literature. Madame de Souza was an acute observer of the intimate workings of Paris society, and of social and political change in the years 1789-1830. Unedited extracts from her novels, Etre et Paraître and other less complete manuscripts appear here in print for the first time. The author was born in 1761, and lived through the political regimes of a Revolution, Empire and Restoration, dying in Paris, in 1836. She had a long life filled with friends, correspondents, and travels in Britain and Europe, and she was admired by literary critics like Sismondi and Marie-Joseph Chénier. Until now, a small amount of research has been focused on her first novel, Adèle de Sénange, but this book shows that this is only one of seven works that should be better known than they are at present.

Book Synopsis The Woman Question in France, 1400–1870 by : Karen Offen
Download or read book The Woman Question in France, 1400–1870 written by Karen Offen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas.
Book Synopsis Science in the Archives by : Lorraine Daston
Download or read book Science in the Archives written by Lorraine Daston and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archives bring to mind rooms filled with old papers and dusty artifacts. But for scientists, the detritus of the past can be a treasure trove of material vital to present and future research: fossils collected by geologists; data banks assembled by geneticists; weather diaries trawled by climate scientists; libraries visited by historians. These are the vital collections, assembled and maintained over decades, centuries, and even millennia, which define the sciences of the archives. With Science in the Archives, Lorraine Daston and her co-authors offer the first study of the important role that these archives play in the natural and human sciences. Reaching across disciplines and centuries, contributors cover episodes in the history of astronomy, geology, genetics, philology, climatology, medicine, and more—as well as fundamental practices such as collecting, retrieval, and data mining. Chapters cover topics ranging from doxology in Greco-Roman Antiquity to NSA surveillance techniques of the twenty-first century. Thoroughly exploring the practices, politics, economics, and potential of the sciences of the archives, this volume reveals the essential historical dimension of the sciences, while also adding a much-needed long-term perspective to contemporary debates over the uses of Big Data in science.
