Le cinqu1eme est digne des beaux jours de Corneille. Andromëde (1650) porte le titre de tragédie. C'est'plutôt un opéra, et l'auteur avoue dans la préface que cette pièce n'est que pour les yeux. Il ne parle pas du musicien qui fit la musi que des intermèdes mais il comble d eloges Torrelli, l'auteur des machines. C'était un nouveau genre que s'ouvrait Corneille, et dans lequel il efiaça tous ses contemperains. Il n'y fut inférieur qu'à lui-mème. La comédie héroïque de Don Sanche d'aragon (1651) eut peu de succès mais la tragédie de Nicomède, qui parut l'année suivante, et qui devrait peut-ètre s'appeler, comme Don Sanche, une comédie héroïque, est une des belles oeuvres de Corneille. Il y a moins d'inspiration et plus d'art que dans se grands ouvrages. Il avoue lui-mème qu'après avoir donné vingt pièces au théâtre, il ne savait plus où trouver quelque chose de nouveau sans 5 écarter un peu du grand chemin, et se mettre au hasard de s'égarer. La tendresse et les passions qui sont l'âme des tragédies n ont aucune part en celle - ci, dit-il; la grandeur de courage y règne seule. C'est dire qu'elle est fondée sur l'ad miration, qui est un sentiment plus froid que la terreur et la pitié. Le caractère de Nicomède est d'une grandeur réfléchie qui élève l'âme, mais sans la passionner. Ce caractère, avec une intrigue terrible, telle que celle de Rodogune, eût été un chef d'oeuvre. Beginning with the court culture of the seventeenth century and ending with Nietzsche’s Dionysian theater, this monograph explores specific modes of entering the stage and the conditions that make them successful—or cause them to fail. The study argues that tragic entrances ultimately always remain incomplete; that the step figures take into visibility invariably remains precarious. Through close readings of texts by Racine, Goethe, and Kleist, among others, it shows that entrances promise both triumph and tragic exposure; though they appear to be expressions of sovereignty, they are always simultaneously threatened by failure or annihilation. With this analysis, the book thus opens up possibilities for a new theory of dramatic form, one that begins not with the plot itself but with the stage entrance that structures how characters appear and thus determines how the plot advances. By reflecting on acts of entering, this book addresses not only scholars of literature, theater, media, and art but anyone concerned with what it means to appear and be present.
