Book excerpt: This exquisite novel tells the story of one of the most compelling heroines in modern literature--Emma Bovary. "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgement." - Henry James Unhappily married to a devoted, clumsy provincial doctor, Emma revolts against the ordinariness of her life by pursuing voluptuous dreams of ecstasy and love. But her sensuous and sentimental desires lead her only to suffering corruption and downfall. A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence. Who is Madame Bovary? Flaubert's answer to this question was superb: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its publication in 1857, the work catapulted Flaubert to the ranks of the world's greatest novelists. This volume, with its fine translation by Lowell Bair, a perceptive introduction by Leo Bersani, and a complete supplement of essays and critical comments, is the indispensable Madame Bovary.

Book Synopsis Madame Bovary (New Edition) by : Gustave Flaubert
Download or read book Madame Bovary (New Edition) written by Gustave Flaubert and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame Bovary is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word"). Long established as one of the greatest novels ever written, the book has often been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. Henry James writes: "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment." Giorgio de Chirico said that in his opinion "from the narrative point of view, the most perfect book is Madame Bovary by Flaubert".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. NECROPHILIA VARIATIONS is a literary monograph on the erotic attraction to corpses and death. It consists of a series of texts that, like musical phrases, take up the theme and advance it by means of repetition, contrast, and variation.Written in a style that ranges from the lugubrious to the ludicrous--from purple prose to black humor--NECROPHILIA VARIATIONS uses literary means to probe the psychopathology of sexual perversion. Eros, the book asks, is naturally drawn to beauty, and yet nothing would seem to be less inherently beautiful than a cadaver. How is it that a necrophile ends up confusing the two, discovering beauty in what most people would find repugnant? How does he come to desire that which would seem to be intrinsically undesirable? If you have ever contemplated the curious points of contact between eros and thanatos, then Necrophilia Variations will be sure to delight you with its depictions of death, desire, and deviance.
Book Synopsis Private moments in the open air by : Mathias Chivot
Download or read book Private moments in the open air written by Mathias Chivot and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exhibition presented at the Musée de l'Abbaye / Guy Bardone - René Genis Donations in Saint-Claude, and then at the Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand, includes more than eighty works (paintings and drawings) brought together in the first study on the theme of landscape in the work of Édouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel. In the 1890s, the two artists were first of all looking to renew the genre of landscape painting by subjecting it to the rather radical experimentations of the Nabis aesthetic. Ten years later however, they turned towards Post-Impressionism and in the 1920s and 1930s their aim was to go back to the tradition of French classicism, a "return to order" that combined the legacy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with Puvis de Chavannes's great decorative works. Three essays shed some light on the rather singular relationship between the two artists, their specific use of pastels as well as the artistic context of the 1890s and the first decades of the twentieth century. Then comes a catalogue of all of the works presented in the two venues, paralleling the exhibition visit, with a number of commentated entries.
