Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Oedipus Rex, also known by its Greek title, Oedipus Tyrannus (Ancient Greek: Οἰδίπους Τύραννος, pronounced [oidípoːs týrannos]), or Oedipus the King, is an Athenian tragedy by Sophocles that was first performed around 429 BC.[1] Originally, to the ancient Greeks, the title was simply Oedipus (Οἰδίπους), as it is referred to by Aristotle in the Poetics. It is thought to have been renamed Oedipus Tyrannus to distinguish it from Oedipus at Colonus, a later play by Sophocles. In antiquity, the term "tyrant" referred to a ruler with no legitimate claim to rule, but it did not necessarily have a negative connotation.[2][3][4] Of Sophocles' three Theban plays that have survived, and that deal with the story of Oedipus, Oedipus Rex was the second to be written, following Antigone by about a dozen years. However, in terms of the chronology of events described by the plays, it comes first, followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Prior to the start of Oedipus Rex, Oedipus has become the king of Thebes while unwittingly fulfilling a prophecy that he would kill his father, Laius (the previous king), and marry his mother, Jocasta (whom Oedipus took as his queen after solving the riddle of the Sphinx). The action of Sophocles's play concerns Oedipus's search for the murderer of Laius in order to end a plague ravaging Thebes, unaware that the killer he is looking for is none other than himself. At the end of the play, after the truth finally comes to light, Jocasta hangs herself while Oedipus, horrified at his patricide and incest, proceeds to gouge out his own eyes in despair. In his Poetics, Aristotle refers several times to the play in order to exemplify aspects of the genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN EPIC TRAGEDY, WIDELY CONSIDERED TO BE A MASTERPIECE Oedipus Rex, Sophocles’ finest play is considered by many to be the greatest of the classic Greek tragedies. First produced sometime around 429 BC, it exhibits near-perfect harmony of character and action and is a work of extraordinary power which has circulated throughout world culture for thousands of years. After Laius, King of Thebes, learns from an oracle that he is doomed to perish by the hand of his own son, he orders his wife Jocasta to kill his newly born son. Unable to do it, Jocasta entrusts a servant with the task instead, who takes the baby to a mountaintop and leaves him to die of exposure. A passing shepherd rescues the baby and names him Oedipus, taking him to Corinth where he is raised by the childless King Polybus as if it were his own. When Oedipus learns that he is not the biological son of Polybus, he seeks the counsel of the Oracle of Delphi who relates to him that he is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother. The play is a unique combination of a murder mystery, a political thriller, and a psychological whodunit. This ironic story of patricide and incest tells how Oedipus, who has become King of Thebes, in order to stop a plague in his kingdom, is determined to find and punish the former king’s assassin, only to learn that the murderer is himself. At the end of the play, after this truth comes to light, the queen, Jocasta hangs herself while Oedipus, horrified at his patricide and incest, gouges out his own eyes in despair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the myth of Oedipus, the man who unwittingly killed his father and married his mother, has exerted a powerful hold on the human imagination; but no retelling of that myth has ever come close, in passion, drama, and menace to the one that we find in Sophocles' Oedipus the King. This new full-scale edition of that classic play - the first in any language since 1883 - offers a freshly constituted text based on consultation of manuscripts ancient and mediaeval. The introduction explores the play's dating and production, its creative engagement with pre-Sophoclean versions, its major themes, and its reception during antiquity. The commentary offers a detailed analysis, line by line and scene by scene, of the play's language, staging, and dramatic impact. The translation incorporated into the commentary ensures that the book will be accessible to all readers interested in what is arguably the greatest Greek tragedy of all.

Now, following the best texts faithfully, and translating the key moral, religious, and political terminology of the plays accurately and consistently, Peter J. Ahrensdorf and Thomas L. Pangle allow contemporary readers to study the most literally exact reproductions of precisely what Sophocles wrote, rendered in readily comprehensible English. These translations enable readers to engage the Theban plays of Sophocles in their full, authentic complexity, and to study with precision the plays’ profound and enduring human questions. In the preface, notes to the plays, and introductions, Ahrensdorf and Pangle supply critical historical, mythic, and linguistic background information, and highlight the moral, religious, political, philosophic, and psychological questions at the heart of each of the plays. Even readers unfamiliar with Greek drama will find what they need to experience, reflect on, and enjoy these towering works of classical literature.

O latest born of ancient Cadmus' race, My Theban children, with what suppliance Thus throng ye to my presence, bearing high The wands of prayer, the branches wound with wool? Rife too the city is with heavy reek Of victims slain, and rife with divers cries, The wail for healing and the moan for death. Not meet I held it, children of my realm, To know thro' lips of messengers alone Tales of your suffering. Behold me here, Great dipus, the rumour of the world. But thou, old man, say on--thou standest forth In speech to champion these that here are met-- What are ye set to seek? unto your fear What aid, or to your love what grace to crave? Right fain am I to help; yea, stern I were, And ruthless, if I recked not of such prayer. The Priest. Hear now, O king and lord of this my land: Thou seest, dipus, how to thy shrines We throng, a crowd of ages manifold. Some faltering yet on childhood's strengthless wing, Some bowed with venerable years, who serve The shrines of gods, as I of Zeus; and some Are chosen blossoms of youth's mateless flowers. And otherwhere, with crowned wands, as we, Sit other suppliants, where the marts are wide, Or by the shrines of Pallas' twofold fanes, Or by Ismenus' fires of augury. For, as thyself art witness, all too deep Wallows the city in the surge of woe, And scarce bears up her overlaboured bows From gulfs of foam incarnadined with death-- Wasting in every bud that teemed with growth, Wasting in every herd that roamed the field, And every child that quickened in the womb, The while, death's torch within his hand, the God Swoops down to rack with fellest plague the land. Void by his hand lies Cadmus' ancient hall, While the dark realm of hell is rich, full-fed...
