Based on the OECD Services Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI) - a unique, evidence-based tool that provides snapshots of regulations affecting trade in services in 22 sectors across 44 countries (representing over 80% of global trade in services) - the analysis highlights the magnitude, nature and impact of the costs entailed by restrictive services trade policies. Book Synopsis Rules for Trade in Services 2.0 by : Gabriel Gari
Download or read book Rules for Trade in Services 2.0 written by Gabriel Gari and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the adaptating process of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) to a constantly changing trade and policy context. The adoption of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), a multilateral agreement with stand-alone rules and principles for the governance of trade and investment in services, represented a watershedin the history of global trade governance. Over three decades after the drafting of the Agreement, WTO Members struggle to deliver on the GATS’ mandate to achieve progressively higher levels of trade liberalisation in a radically different trade and policy landscape. Against this background, this book examines the contribution of the WTO negotiating, adjudicative, and deliberative functions to adapting the GATS to changing circumstances. The book uncovers an extremely flexible and adaptable agreement whose full potential has yet to be realised due to a complex set of factors weighing more broadly on the use of the WTO functions. The book distils the factors at play that constrain WTO Members’ capacity to adapt the Agreement to changing circumstances and explores potential pathways to overcome them. The book will be of interest to scholars, policy makers, and trade diplomats interested in understanding the factors and processes conditioning the adaptation of a multilateral trade agreement to changing trade and policy circumstances.

Book Synopsis China’s Digital Economy: Opportunities and Risks by : Ms.Longmei Zhang
Download or read book China’s Digital Economy: Opportunities and Risks written by Ms.Longmei Zhang and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s digital economy has expanded rapidly in recent years. While average digitalization of the economy remains lower than in advanced economies, digitalization is already high in certain regions and sectors, in particular e-commerce and fintech, and costal regions. Such transformation has boosted productivity growth, with varying impact on employment across sectors. Going forward, digitalization will continue to reshape the Chinese economy by improving efficiency, softening though not reversing, the downward trend of potential growth as the economy matures. The government should play a vital role in maximizing the benefits of digitalization while minimizing related risks, such as potential labor disruption, privacy infringement, emerging oligopolies, and financial risks.

Book Synopsis World Development Report 2020 by : World Bank
Download or read book World Development Report 2020 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.
