Book excerpt: Lauded as masterpieces by critics and casual readers alike, two of Wordsworth's most renowned poems are beautifully rendered in this illustrated book. "Ode: Intimations of Immortality" marked one of the high points in literary history and continues to impress readers today. The poem comments on the glories of childhood and the ability of children to be spiritually awakened in ways that adults cannot. Wordsworth's emphasis on nature epitomizes the Romantic belief of Nature as a transcendent and sublime force. The poem suggests that nature is a force that has the ability to bring joy to humanity and alleviate the ills of the adult world, temporarily transporting adults back to their youthful, and, thus, spiritual states. The second poem in the collection, "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," is an equally important piece of literature. In this autobiographical poem, Wordsworth returns to a spot overlooking the Wye River, a place where he spent his boyhood. This setting serves as a point of meditation, as he notes the positive and sublime feelings the scene evokes in him. As quintessential examples of the Romantic Movement, these poems brought new life to English poetry by removing the constraints of Victorian convention and breathing new life into a literary genre.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intimations of Immortality: An Ode This great Ode, composed during the period of l803-06 while Wordsworth resided at Grasmere, was written with two years' interval at least between the first four and the seven remaining stanzas. First printed in 1807 it bore the simple title of Ode with a motto prefixed: Paulò majora canamus. Later on, in 1815, the title was enlarged with characteristic diffuseness to Ode. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ode; Intimations of Immortality: From Recollections of Early Childhood This was composed during my residence at Town-end, Grasmere. Two years at least passed between the writing of the four first stanzas and the remaining part. To the attentive and competent reader the whole sufficiently explains itself; but there may be no harm in adverting here to particular feelings or experiences of my own mind on which the structure of the poem partly rests. Nothing was more difficult for me in childhood than to admit the notion of death as a state applicable to my own being. I have said elsewhere, "A simple child, That lightly draws its breath, And feels its life in every limb, What should it know of death!" But it was not so much from feelings of animal vivacity that my difficulty came as from a sense of the indomitableness of the spirit within me. I used to brood over the stories of Enoch and Elijah, and almost to persuade myself that, whatever might become of others, I should be translated, in something of the same way, to heaven. With a feeling congenial to this, I was often unable to think of external things as having external existence, and I communed with all that I saw as something not apart from, but inherent in, my own immaterial nature. Book excerpt: More than any other period of British literature, Romanticism is strongly identified with a single genre. Romantic poetry has been one of the most enduring, best loved, most widely read and most frequently studied genres for two centuries and remains no less so today. This Companion offers a comprehensive overview and interpretation of the poetry of the period in its literary and historical contexts. The essays consider its metrical, formal, and linguistic features; its relation to history; its influence on other genres; its reflections of empire and nationalism, both within and outside the British Isles; and the various implications of oral transmission and the rapid expansion of print culture and mass readership. Attention is given to the work of less well-known or recently rediscovered authors, alongside the achievements of some of the greatest poets in the English language: Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Scott, Burns, Keats, Shelley, Byron and Clare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published seven years after William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s popular collection Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth’s Poems, in Two Volumes shocked readers and drew scornful reviews. Poems was a revolutionary challenge to literary taste in revolution-weary times. The poems were perceived as inappropriately personal and egotistical in the attention that the poet pays to “moods of [his own] mind.” The collection is now seen as containing some of the most enduring works of British Romantic poetry, and Wordsworth’s achievement in opening up new worlds of subject matter, emotion, and poetic expression is widely recognized. Richard Matlak places the initial reaction to Poems in its historical context and explains the sea change in critical and popular opinion about these poems. The extensive historical documents place the poems in the context of Wordsworth’s life, contemporary politics, and the literary world of the early nineteenth century.
