Download or read book Voyager written by Stephen J. Pyne and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant new account of the Voyager space program-its history, scientific impact, and cultural legacy Launched in 1977, the two unmanned Voyager spacecraft have completed their Grand Tour to the four outer planets, and they are now on course to become the first man-made objects to exit our solar system. To many, this remarkable achievement is the culmination of a golden age of American planetary exploration, begun in the wake of the 1957 Sputnik launch. More than this, Voyager may be one of the purest expressions of exploration in human history. For more than five hundred years the West has been powered by the impulse to explore, to push into a wider world. In this highly original book, Stephen Pyne recasts Voyager in the tradition of Magellan, Columbus, Cook, Lewis and Clark, and other landmark explorers. The Renaissance and Enlightenment-the First and Second Ages of Discovery- sent humans across continents and oceans to find new worlds. In the Third Age, expeditions have penetrated the Antarctic ice, reached the floors of the oceans, and traveled to the planets by new means, most spectacularly via semi-autonomous robot. Voyager probes how the themes of motive and reward are stunningly parallel through all three ages. Voyager, which gave us the first breathtaking images of Jupiter and Saturn, changed our sense of our own place in the universe.

Book Synopsis Eroticism and Containment by : Carol Siegel
Download or read book Eroticism and Containment written by Carol Siegel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1994-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual confessions on television talk shows. Gender and medical discourse in colonial India. River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho. White women in a German colony. Henry James' thwarted love. What do these seemingly diverse subjects have in common? All address, in different ways, social and cultural attempts to contain eroticism by delineating the perimeters of genders. They scrutinize the political investments in the construction of gender in such disparate locations as contemporary Hollywood, Renaissance England, colonial India and Africa, and in modern and contemporary homosexual discourse communities and in Freud's sessions with Dora. But whether the gendering of the subject follows the dictates of conservative politics or the radical agenda of a marginalized interest, the essays reveal the erotic overflow—the flood—that cannot be contained within any one gender identity. In examining how the erotic escapes containment, this work discloses problems inherent in the intersections of gender and desire. [ go to the Genders website ]
Book Synopsis Picturing the Bronze Age by : Johan Ling
Download or read book Picturing the Bronze Age written by Johan Ling and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictures from the Bronze Age are numerous, vivid and complex. There is no other prehistoric period that has produced such a wide range of images spanning from rock art to figurines to decoration on bronzes and gold. Fourteen papers, with a geographical coverage from Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsula, examine a wide range of topics reflecting the many forms and expressions of Bronze Age imagery encompassing important themes including religion, materiality, mobility, interaction, power and gender. Contributors explore specific elements of rock art in some detail such as the representation of the human form; images of manslaughter; and gender identities. The relationship between rock art imagery and its location on the one hand, and metalwork and networks of trade and exchange of both materials and ideas on the other, are considered. Modern and ancient perceptions of rock art are discussed, in particular the changing perceptions that have developed during almost 150 years of documented research. Picturing the Bronze Age is based on an international workshop with the same title held in Tanum, Sweden in October 2012.
Download or read book Oddities written by Rupert T Gould and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1928 by Rupert Gould, the first of two books featuring strange facts about natural history, animals, and lore, Oddities: A Book of Unexplained Facts is filled with odd tales that will delight and baffle. Readers will get small history lessons embedded in wondrous and curious tales about Nostradamus, the Aurora Islands, and the planet Vulcan. Part of the Loren Coleman Presents series from Cosimo Classics, as well as its sequel, Enigmas: Another Book of Unexplained Facts, Oddities will entertain readers of all types, but especially those interested in mythology, folktales, and cryptozoology. RUPERT T. GOULD (1890-1948) was a cryptozoology enthusiast, as evidenced by his books on the Loch Ness Monster and the Great Sea Serpent, as well as his books on unexplained facts. Though he was a career lieutenant commander in the British Royal Navy, Gould was best known for his contributions to marine horology. His work The Marine Chronometer was considered the authoritative text on marine timekeepers for more than 50 years. His other interests lay in science (he was a science educator on the BBC's children's hour; his lectures later became the book The Stargazer Talks), tennis (he umpired at Wimbledon), and radio. In 1947, Gould received a Gold Medal from The British Horological Institute in highest honor for his contributions to the field. He died in 1948 at 57 years of age.
Book Synopsis HISTORIC ODDITIES AND STRANGE EVENTS by : S. BARING GOULD, M.A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reader of history in its various epochs in different countries, comes upon eccentric individuals and extraordinary events, lightly passed over, may be, as not materially affecting the continuity of history, as not producing any seriously disturbing effect on its course. Such persons, such events have always awakened interest in myself, and when I have come on them, it has been my pleasure to obtain such details concerning them as were available, and which would be out of place in a general history as encumbering it with matter that is unimportant, or of insufficient importance to occupy much space. Two of the narratives contained in this work have appeared already in the "Cornhill Magazine," but I have considerably[Pg viii] enlarged them by the addition of fresh material; some of the others came out in the "Gentleman's Magazine," and one in "Belgravia." With only two of them—"Peter Nielsen" and "A Wax and Honey-Moon"—are the authorities somewhat gone beyond and the facts slightly dressed to assume the shape of stories.

Download or read book Oddity written by Eli Brown and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The daughter of a murdered physician vows to protect the magical Oddity he left behind in an alternate nineteenth century where a failed Louisiana Purchase has locked a young Unified States into conflict with France. It’s the early 1800s, and Clover travels the impoverished borderlands of the Unified States with her father, a physician. See to the body before you, he teaches her, but Clover can’t help becoming distracted by bigger things, including the coming war between the US and France, ignited by a failed Louisiana Purchase, and the terrifying vermin, cobbled together from dead animals and spare parts, who patrol the woods. Most of all, she is consumed with interest for Oddities, ordinary objects with extraordinary abilities, such as a Teapot that makes endless amounts of tea and an Ice Hook that freezes everything it touches. Clover’s father has always disapproved of Oddities, but when he is murdered, Clover embarks on a perilous mission to protect the one secret Oddity he left behind. And as she uncovers the truth about her parents and her past, Clover emerges as a powerful agent of history. Here is an action-filled American fantasy of alternate history to rival the great British fantasies in ideas and scope.
