Book excerpt: This interim report describes the cruise of the Coast Guard ice breaker NORTHWIND (WAGB-282) to the continental shelf area of the Greenland Sea during August and September 1984. This cruise has been designated Arctic East 1984 (AE84), but for continuity with past cruises is also termed MIZLANT 84. The cruise had two primary objectives: (a) to map the bathymetry of the shelf between 76 N and 82 N, and (b) to conduct CTD soundings in these waters to establish the circulation and water mass structure over the troughs and shoals of the shelf. Because of very light ice conditions, both of these objectives were completely met. The NORTHWIND track covered over 6500 km (3500 miles) providing continuous depth soundings over the entire track. Over 300 CTD stations were made while on the shelf, most conducted at 10-15 km intervals in the high interest areas of the troughs, coastal region and other areas of rapidly changing bottom depth.

The method used was a modified Winkler determination involving the titration of an aliquot portion of the treated sample with sodium thiosulfate using starch as an endpoint indicator. Salinity samples were drawn from each Nansen bottle and determinations run at least every fourth station. Salinities were determined using the Model 6220 inductive salinometer manufactured by the bissett-berman Corpora tion. This instrument has an accuracy stated by the manufacturer of At least two determinations were made on each sample. Book excerpt: The oceanographic survey phase of the 1963 Bering Sea Patrol was conducted in the Chukchi, East Siberian and Laptev Seas during the months of August and September. The cruise was designed to study the effect of the discharge of the major river systems along the North Siberian coast. Accomplishments of the cruise included acquisition of comprehensive physical and chemical data as well as execution of geological, bathymetric and biological investigations. A total of 180 serial oceanographic stations were occupied; 41 in the Chukchi Sea, 53 in the East Siberian Sea and 86 in the Laptev Sea. Bathythermograph observations were taken at each of the stations and at appropriate intervals between stations. Bottom samples (gravity corer or orange peel) were also obtained at each of the oceanographic stations as well as at 21 other locations. Over 7,000 miles of echo-sounding track was obtained with an AN/UQN-1C (EDO) fathometer. Much of the 7,000 mile track was in areas of only sketchy hydrographic information. (Author).
