Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oceania Linguistic and Anthropological The Negro element in the Oceanic race had been introduced earlier than the Mongol: it is more universally diffused, occurring in Madagascar, Malaysia, and the Pacific; and in these islands in Malaysia where both the Negroid and Mongoloid Oceanians are found, the former are regarded as the more aboriginal or ancient, and dwell in the inland parts, while the latter prevail upon the coasts; and the Mongoloid element decreases in quantity, generally speaking, in proportion to the distance into Oceania from the south eastern extremity oi Asia, as well as to that from the coast into the interior of the larger islands. The Oceanians are physically considered a mixed race. Even in the same small village, in an island, great variety may often be Observed in the hair, colour, and features of the inhabitants. The race varieties are not separated by definite and fixed lines, but shade Ofi' imperceptibly the one into the other. The Malay races, says De Quatrefages, are the result of the amalgamation, in different proportions, of whites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oceanic Languages: Their Grammatical Structure, Vocabulary, and Origin This work contains a Grammar and complete Dictionary of the language of Efate, New Hebrides, which is a typical specimen of the Oceanic languages which are spoken by fifty millions, or one-thirtieth, of the human race in islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, extending over two hundred degrees of longitude. It contains also a Comparative Grammar, and, to a sufficient extent, a Comparative Vocabulary of these languages, together with the evidence of their Arabian origin; thus adding these fifty millions to those previously known as Semitic speakers, as, one hundred years ago, the many millions (now 219,725,509) in India were, by similar evidence, added to those previously known as Aryan (European) speakers. It is a unique unveiling of the linguistic, mental, religious and moral life, social organization, and prehistoric antecedents of the existing Oceanic 'savages', or 'primitive' man. To those engaged in the study of man, Anthropologists and Ethnologists, more especially to students of Linguistic science, Orientalists, and Semitic scholars, the work should prove a welcome, and even, it may be said, an indispensable aid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theologians in the Pacific Islands see culture as the grounds on which one understands God. In this pathbreaking book, Matt Tomlinson engages in an anthropological conversation with the work of “contextual theologians,” exploring how the combination of Pacific Islands culture and Christianity shapes theological dialogues. Employing both scholarly research and ethnographic fieldwork, the author addresses a range of topics: from radical criticisms of biblical stories as inappropriate for Pacific audiences to celebrations of traditional gods such as Tagaloa as inherently Christian figures. This book presents a symphony of voices—engaged, critical, prophetic—from the contemporary Pacific’s leading religious thinkers and suggests how their work articulates with broad social transformations in the region. Each chapter in this book focuses on a distinct type of culturally driven theological dialogue. One type is between readers and texts, in which biblical scholars suggest new ways of reading, and even rewriting, the Bible so it becomes more meaningful in local terms. A second kind concerns the state of the church and society. For example, feminist theologians and those calling for “prophetic” action on social problems propose new conversations about how people in Oceania should navigate difficult times. A third kind of discussion revolves around identity, emphasizing what makes Oceania unique and culturally coherent. A fourth addresses the problems of climate change and environmental degradation to sacred lands by encouraging “eco-theological” awareness and interconnection. Finally, many contextual theologians engage with the work of other disciplines— prominently, anthropology—as they develop new discourse on God, people, and the future of Oceania. Contextual theology allows people in Oceania to speak with God and fellow humans through the idiom of culture in a distinctly Pacific way. Tomlinson concludes, however, that the most fruitful topic of dialogue might not be culture, but rather the nature of dialogue itself. Written in an accessible, engaging style and presenting innovative findings, this book will interest students and scholars of anthropology, world religion, theology, globalization, and Pacific studies.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of approaches to language and culture, and it outlines the broad interdisciplinary field of anthropological linguistics and linguistic anthropology. It identifies current and future directions of research, including language socialization, language reclamation, speech styles and genres, language ideology, verbal taboo, social indexicality, emotion, time, and many more. Furthermore, it offers areal perspectives on the study of language in cultural contexts (namely Africa, the Americas, Australia and Oceania, Mainland Southeast Asia, and Europe), and it lays the foundation for future developments within the field. In this way, the book bridges the disciplines of cultural anthropology and linguistics and paves the way for the new book series Anthropological Linguistics.
