Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine what occupational therapists currently include in pre-surgery education for patients undergoing total hip replacement and the educational methods used to teach the information. The study also examined what occupational therapists perceive as the ideal pre-surgery education program, including content, teaching methods, and the role of occupational therapy. A survey was completed by 57 occupational therapists who had treated clients following total hip replacement in the last year. Respondents indicated that a variety of teaching methods were used to teach the content areas in pre-surgery education. More teaching methods were identified when describing the ideal program than in current pre-surgery education programs. Respondents also indicated that occupational therapy would have a larger role in the ideal pre-surgery education program. The results of this study can be used to modify or develop more comprehensive pre-surgery education programs for patients undergoing planned total hip replacements. For those who are developing a pre-surgery education program, the information about what should be taught and recommended teaching methods can help guide in the development of model programs.

Occupational therapists at hospitals across the United States were surveyed and the response rate was 55% (56 of 102). The results demonstrated that occupational therapists evaluate cognitive status of patients post total hip replacement by using a formal tool or through informal ways. In addition, the responses to the survey revealed the importance of cognitive evaluation results and the differences in intervention that are provided to patients post hip replacement/fracture with mild-moderate cognitive impairment compared with patients without impairment.
