Download or read book Environmental Medicine written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-05-28 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are increasingly concerned about potential environmental health hazards and often ask their physicians questions such as: "Is the tap water safe to drink?" "Is it safe to live near power lines?" Unfortunately, physicians often lack the information and training related to environmental health risks needed to answer such questions. This book discusses six competency based learning objectives for all medical school students, discusses the relevance of environmental health to specific courses and clerkships, and demonstrates how to integrate environmental health into the curriculum through published case studies, some of which are included in one of the book's three appendices. Also included is a guide on where to obtain additional information for treatment, referral, and follow-up for diseases with possible environmental and/or occupational origins.

Download or read book Contaminated Water Supplies at Camp Lejeune written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-09-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.

Book excerpt: Methyl chloroform (MC) is a volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon used extensivley as an industrial solvent and in consumer products. It has been detected in the ambient air of a variety of urban and non-urban areas of the United States. Normally, background levels are in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 ppb (0.54 x 10−3 to 1.08 x 10−3 mg/m3). MC has been less frequently detected in water, generally at levels of 1 ppb or less. In certain instances involving contamination of groundwater, much higher levels have been reported. The weight of available evidence obtained from both human and animal data suggests that long-term exposure to environmental levels of MC poses no serious health concern to the general population. However, the available data are inadequate for classifying the mutagenic and carcinogenic potential for MC. The no-observed-effect level (NOEL*) for short-term exposure of humans is in the range of 350 to 500 ppm (1,890 to 2,700 mg/m3).
Download or read book Human Toxicology written by J. Descotes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-09-02 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent volume was designed and edited with two major ideas in mind: firstly, the field of clinical toxicology is changing and an acknowledgement of these changes is warranted; secondly, no comprehensive compilation of recently published case reports of, and clinical studies on, human poisonings is available, which is in sharp contrast to the closely related field of drug-induced side-effects. The book focusses on issues of recent concern, or issues poorly documented in the past. It is important that clinical toxicologists gain a better knowledge of all the available techniques of toxicological analysis. A better understanding of the way a sound interpretation of results should be conducted for the benefit of the patient's management, and a comprehensive set of data on the kinetics of the most common pharmaceutical drugs and many chemicals is required. Human Toxicology is a timely reference work which will be welcomed by a broad audience of toxicology professionals.
