Whether or not Serbia was seriously in the wrong is a matter of opinion, but it is generally held that Austria dealt with her neighbour with too much heat and too little discretion. Austria kindled the flames of war, but it was Germany's mission to seize a blazing torch and set Europe alight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German War Book: Being "the Usages of War on Land" Issued by the Great General Staff of the German Army; Translated With a Critical Introduction Our war-book is more discreet but not more merciful. Private property, it begins by saying, Should always be respected. To take a man's property when he is present is robbery when he is absent it is downright burglary. But if the necessity Of war makes it advisable, every sequestration, every appropriation, temporary or permanent, every use, every injury and all destruction are permissible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German War Aims There is the kind of peace which would mean no territorial gain for the Central Powers, a peace without annexations which would give back to all belligerents the territory which they possessed in July 1914 or its equivalent, but which would yet make it possible for Germany to say she had gained by the war in other ways - for instance, in the con solidation of her power in Central Europe and in the Near East: There is the kind of peace which would bring Germany territorial gain, in the West, or in Russia, or in Africa. The first kind of peace, the only one which could be satisfactory to us, is still universally treated in Germany as unthinkable. No party or individual is willing in any public utterance or writing to con template it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German "Truth" And European Facts About the War It must not be supposed that we are satisfied of the existence of any francs-theme in Belgium, nor can we accept in its full extent the German View that, on pain of death, no man without a uniform may defend his own house or his own wife and children. We have thought it needless to enter on controvertible points. As to the charges of wanton cruelty towards Germans in Bel gian cities in the first days of war, we shall only say that, as made, they are too vague to be examined, and nothing has been heard of them in Europe so far as we know. If they were true, they would not justify or excuse retaliation in cold blood. All the world knows what has been reported from the smaller places captured and occupied by German soldiery. We hope, for the credit of humanity, that much of it will prove to be false or exaggerated. But, in face of the serious attitude of the Belgian Government, we cannot assume that all German hands are clean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Army in War I have endeavoured to make the book a collection of facts, with only so much discussion of them as is necessary to make them clear to the reader, avoiding as far as possible any attempt at criticism. But the mere statement of these facts is enough to Show that the German army is a very formidable fighting organisation. And I think it is well that this should be understood. It is a mistake to underrate an Opponent. The Germans made this mistake with regard to our own gallant army. Some writers here at home appear to me to have been as much at fault in their estimates of the German army at the outset of the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the German Armies in the West Long before my book dealing with my personal recollection from the war theatres of France and Belgium had been translated into English, it was made the subject of a criticism in the "Daily Telegraph" of February 15th. The author, Mr. William Archer, complained that I have not once introduced into my narrative any harsh and condemnatory utterances regarding Germany's conduct of the war. The fact is that I have had no occasion for such utterances. My self-imposed task was, as I have repeatedly made clear, merely to describe what I saw with my own eyes and as much as possible to refrain from citing the experience of others. During the two months that I spent on the German western front, I did not see a single instance of cruelty to prisoners or wounded, let alone ill-treatment of the civil population and its goods and chattels. The Germans maintained the same incorruptibly severe and just discipline that existed, according to the testimony of history, in the Swedish armies which Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII. led to victory during the epic period of my own country. But even in peace time not a day passes but that crime is committed even in the most civilised countries. How, then, can one expect that it shall disappear in a war? I therefore by no means deny that there have been isolated instances of offences and cruelty in an army of several million men. But I have not seen them and need not therefore embark upon the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Barbarism: A Neutral's Indictment This new volume on Germany's conception and practice of war is the work of a neutral, a fact which would alone suffice to secure it our sympathies. Moreover, it is a book which is systematically arranged, based on documentary evidence, serious and obviously sincere, qualities too weighty not to compel the respect not only of the French public, but of all those, to whatever nationality they may belong, who may care to read it or merely to glance through it with an unprejudiced eye. The author is a Greek, who loves France and who knows her. He knows her because he has lived there; he is not blind to her weak points, but having been early captured by her, he knows the profound mistake into which a stranger falls who is content to judge her by appearances: he has fathomed the depths of her character and discovered the inexhaustible resources of will and energy concealed beneath an apparent, yet much exaggerated, levity. It is for this reason that in the dread crisis through which she is passing, and from which, as he well knows, she will emerge victorious, he has been willing to fight on our side, at least with the pen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Assault: Germany Before the Outbreak and England in War-Time; A Personal Narrative This is not a "war book." It has bot been my privilege at any stage of the Great Blood-Letting to come into close contact with the spectacular clash and din of the fray. Alber pens than mine, many of them wielded by the "neutral" hands of American colleagues, are immortalizing the terrible, yet irresistibly fascinating, scenes of this most stupendous drama. But every drama has its scenario and its prologue and its behind-the-curtain scenes - none ever written was so rich in these preliminaries and accessories as is Europe's epic. To have witnessed and lived through some of these was vouchsafed me; and to take American readers with me down the line of the past year's recollections and impressions is the sole object of this unpretentious effort. History, Caryle said, was some one's record of personal, the pages of this book are confined. For thirteen years to the week - I have always had a respectful horror of thirteen - I was a resident of Berlin. During the first five years of that period my identity was clear: I was the representative in Germany of an American newspaper, the Chicago Daily News.
