Book excerpt: “A system is viable only if it combines speed and slowness,” write Philippe Cury and Daniel Pauly. “Nature’s cycles tell us that viability requires a combination of these dynamics—fast and slow, innovation and inertia.” Obstinate Nature, a concise and powerful collaboration between two accomplished marine biologists, is centrally concerned with the imbalance in those dynamics that currently threatens our planet, our environment, and our survival. Since our emergence as a species, Homo sapiens has overridden the slow and cyclical natural order in the ceaseless pursuit of faster everything: population growth, territorial expansion, food cultivation, and technological development. Now, as climate change and declining resources push us ever closer to the brink of collapse, the true test of a sustainable future will be whether we can reconcile our perpetual thirst for linear acceleration with the painstaking natural cycles that allowed us to exist in the first place. Through encounters with remarkable animals, such as sea turtles and jellyfish, and eye-opening stories about exploitative practices like overfishing and institutionalized animal cruelty, Obstinate Nature shows in personably philosophical language just how steep a price the natural world is paying for our follies and excesses—and what our future holds if we fail to embrace and respect the rest of life on earth. Coming not a moment too soon, Obstinate Nature is a chilling portrait of unchecked and longstanding human arrogance, and a sober exhortation to find our place within nature, not over it, before the clock runs out. Philippe Cury is research director at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, scientific co-director of the Euromarine Consortium, and former director of the Center for Tropical and Mediterranean Research in Sète, France. Recognized globally as a leading specialist in marine resources, Daniel Pauly leads the Sea Around Us project at the University of British Columbia Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, of which he was formerly director.

Book excerpt: It has been said that the future of Life is about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and that as AI advances a point will be reached, the Singularity, when humans will no longer have a clue as to what is going on nor why. Essentially as a species, humans will at this point have been marginalized by a global, singular intelligence, whose capabilities far outstrip human intelligence. On the contrary, this book will make the case that the future of Life is enabled by the pre-existent complexity that exists in every iota of it and that there have already been a series of light-based epiphanies by virtue of which Life in its continuing complexities has emerged as partial-singularities, and further, will culminate in a Second Singularity as more of our species consciously opens to the fullness of Light. The power and capabilities of the Second Singularity will far outstrip any AI-based singularity. This pre-existent complexity derives from the fact that Light exists in multiple states simultaneously. Hence, there is a fundamental and single light-based edifice that informs our universe, and it is by virtue of this light-based edifice that all matter, all life, all mind, and all emergences beyond the level of mind will surface. The future of life, hence, cannot be due to AI. At best, AI, can create a process by which many tasks that usually require utilization of the fundamental light-derived capacity of intelligence in order to be completed, can be completed by an exhaustively repetitive running of algorithms driven by massive computing power, hence giving the illusion of intelligence. Projected forward, the exhaustively repetitive running of algorithms driven by massive computing power, endow a practically ubiquitous digitally-enabled strata to control many tasks, and this may create the phenomenon of a “singularity” – in which humankind effectively cannot even fathom how things are happening anymore and is seemingly outpaced and outthought at every step in every direction by an ‘intelligence’ that appears to be all-knowing, all-present, and all-powerful. But this kind of singularity is fundamentally separated from the light-based edifice behind all things, and from which all things rise. It is hence not a true singularity in the sense of a finite function assuming infinite value, but is fundamentally limited in its scope by virtue of its disconnection from the founts of Life. This does not preclude an AI-based singularity from having massive practical power that can have an enormous destructive or constructive effect on humankind and material life. What it does mean though is that there is another singularity, a human-founded singularity, the Second Singularity, which can exceed the limits of any AI-based singularity due to its fundamental union with the light-based edifice that is behind and informs all of Life. The possible human-founded singularity, it will be discovered, is one in a long series of naturally occurring though partial-singularities that derive their existence from a fundamental union with the light-based edifice behind all things. Such partial-singularities are characterized by having all the power of the light-edifice behind them, though the emergences in such partial-singularities are not necessarily aware of their oneness with the light-based edifice. In the Second Singularity humans become aware of such oneness, becoming conscious projections animated by a single intelligence, love, and power of which they are a part. It is hence no more the human-level capacity that drives such humans, but the infinite capacities of the one light-based edifice that drives. This book focuses on the mathematics of emergence of these naturally occurring partial-singularities, leading up to the possible human-founded singularity that will endow humankind with the potential for extraordinary capacities.

Book excerpt: Gregory of Nyssa's Contra Eunomium, one of the major books on trinitarian theology of the 4th century, documents the exchange between Eunomius and the Cappadocian Father in the last episode of the so-called "Arian Crisis". The present volume is devoted to the third and last book of Contra Eunomium. It offers a fresh English translation with a running commentary in the form of ten studies by first-rank specialists. Seventeen shorter papers enlighten various aspects of Contra Eunomium and other writings of the same author. The contributions will be of interest for scholars of historical and systematical theology, philosophy, spirituality, rhetoric and the history of the Early Church.

Book excerpt: Hegel is notable for his distinctive contribution to the perennial concerns of political philosophy. He outlines a powerful account of freedom as both a personal and social achievement, discussing theories of personal rights, private property and punishment. He articulates a social analysis of human action and criticizes Kantian ethics. His theory of self-actualization locates our social identities within 'Ethical Life' - the institutions of family life, civil society and the state - expressing a unique variety of rationalist conservatism. In this volume some of the finest interpreters of Hegel writing in English explore this distinguished heritage and explain its contemporary relevance.

His special interest is Construction Auditing and he has done various researches, submitted articles to construction magazines and presented research papers at international conferences. His personal opinion is that the Construction Cost professional Institutions and the Professionals at large have completely ignored the field of construction auditing for a long time. The governments’ construction expenditure, which now involve a significant portion of the budget of many countries mandated to be audited as check & balance. This government construction auditing exercise is still carried out by Financial Institutions under the name of Performance Auditing. The lack of interest by the Cost Construction professional Institutions resulted in the continuation of Performance Auditing by Financial Accountants. Construction at present is huge, complicated, involving different entities with various Contractual arrangements. The Financial Accountants do not have the sufficient skill to audit construction in the present environment and the results are plain to see. The loss owing to Frauds in government double (internal & external) audited construction has reached upwards of US $ 4 Trillion per year according to Transparency International. That is US $ 1.50 per head per day of the entire world population. This is an affront to the 21 century as more than a Billion people live below US $ 1.25 per day. The immediate requirement is a Post- Graduate course on Construction Auditing, Construction Auditing standards and a union for such auditors. The author hopes that this book will serve some purpose in that long exercise. The book can also be helpful to practicing construction professionals and students following construction related courses. . Book excerpt: Divine retribution, Robert Reed argues, is a principal driving force in Shakespeare's English history plays and three of his major tragedies. Reed finds evidence of the playwright's growing ingenuity and maturing skill in his treatment of the crime of political homicide, its impact on events, and God's judgment on the criminal. Reed's analysis focuses upon Tudor concepts that he shows were familiar to all Elizabethans—the biblical principle of inherited guilt, the doctrine that God is the fountainhead of retribution, with man merely His instrument, and the view that conscience serves a fundamentally divine function—and he urges us to look at Shakespeare within the context of his time, avoiding the too-frequent tendency of twentieth-century critics to force a modern world view on the plays. Heaven's power of vengeance provides an essential unifying theme to the plays of the two historical tetralogies, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Macbeth. By analyzing these plays in the light of values held by Shakespeare's contemporaries, Reed has made a substantial contribution toward clarifying our understanding of the plays and of Elizabethan England.
