Book excerpt: Scottish theologian, educator, astronomer and popularizer of science, Thomas Dick (1774-1857) promoted a Christianized form of science to inhibit secularization, to win converts to Christianity, and to persuade evangelicals that science was sacred. His devotional theology of nature made radical claims for cultural authority. This book presents the first detailed analysis of his life and works. After an extended biographical introduction, Dick's theology of nature is examined within the context of natural theology, and also his views on the plurality of worlds, the nebular hypothesis and geology. Other chapters deal with Dick's use of aesthetics to shape social behaviour for millennial purposes, and with the publishing history of his works, their availability and their reception. In the final part, the author explores Dick's influence in America. His pacifism won him Northern evangelical supporters, while his writings dominated the burgeoning field of popular science, powerfully shaping science's cultural meaning and its uses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT’S GOD DOING IN YOUR STORY? Our kids beg us for stories at bedtime or while we drive; we gather around firepits and dinner tables to tell and retell our favorite tales—the more dramatic the better. But when it comes to our actual lives, we prefer something less sensational, even boring—sunny skies and smooth sailing, please and thank you. We want our own stories to be predictable, safe, controllable, and catastrophe-free. When plans fall apart, jobs are lost, kids wander off, doctors give bad reports, we often wonder, "What are you doing, God? Are you sure you have this under control? It doesn’t really seem like it right now." God is the master Storyteller. He’s writing your story and it’s a part of His bigger, grander, eternal Story. But we’re still in the middle. We haven’t gotten to the happy ending yet, and it can be hard to trust Him in the thick of our struggles. That’s why Robert and Nancy share their own story, friends’ stories, and the stories of people in the Bible who have faced life-altering challenges, but, in the end, have found God to be faithful. Learn why you really can trust God to write your story—no matter what plot twists you may encounter along the way. "This is a unique and charming book, integrating stories of God’s providence from His people and His Word. Nancy and Robert write personally and beautifully, infusing readers with a Christ-centered vision, hope, and trust for the future." -Randy Alcorn, author of Heaven, Giving is the Good Life, and Deception "You Can Trust God to Write Your Story is an amazing book whose title says it all. For if you are a follower of Jesus, every day of your life—whether you feel like it or not—is weighted with kingdom purpose, eternal significance, and a royal destiny filled with joy and contentment. Let my dear friends, Robert and Nancy, help you embrace the mysteries of the Lord’s Providence. For when it comes to happy endings, you can’t find a better Author than the God of the Bible. Happy endings are His forte—turn the page, trust Him, and discover it for yourself." -Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

Book excerpt: Mozi (Chinese: 墨子; pinyin: Mòzǐ; c. 470 – c. 391 BC), original name Mo Di (墨翟), was a Chinese philosopher during the Hundred Schools of Thought period (early Warring States period). A book named after him, the Mozi, contains material ascribed to him and his followers. Born in what is now Tengzhou, Shandong Province, he founded the school of Mohism that argued strongly against Confucianism and Taoism. His philosophy emphasized self-restraint, self-reflection and authenticity rather than obedience to ritual. During the Warring States period, Mohism was actively developed and practiced in many states but fell out of favour when the legalist Qin dynasty came to power. During that period, many Mohist classics are by many believed to have been ruined when the emperor Qin Shi Huang supposedly carried out the burning of books and burying of scholars. The importance of Mohism further declined when Confucianism became the dominant school of thought during the Han Dynasty, until mostly disappearing by the middle of the Western Han dynasty. The concept of Ai (愛) was developed by the Chinese philosopher Mozi in the 4th century BC in reaction to Confucianism's benevolent love. Mozi tried to replace what he considered to be the long-entrenched Chinese over-attachment to family and clan structures with the concept of "universal love" (jiān'ài, 兼愛). In this, he argued directly against Confucians who believed that it was natural and correct for people to care about different people in different degrees. "Mozi" is also the name of the philosophical text compiled by Mohists from Mozi's thought. This text originally consisted of 71 chapters. Because Mohism disappeared as a living tradition from China, its texts were not well maintained, and many chapters are missing or in a corrupted state.

Time has laid itself upon the man in that there are changes. Such changes have caused the souls of men to be placed to a time press. Like the time piece that is flipped and thus placed into motion, will the sand pieces fall in accordance to the laws assigned to it. As the sand pieces are, so has the man become. By what consideration is so to such sand pieces, will that man proceed. Though the man observes the falling of sand pieces, there is confusion. There is confusion, for mankind is found wanting in reference to what measures he declares is so. Though a world presents with law, the many are found apart from truthfulness. Yes, mankind is unable to tell of the diminishing of his soul’s condition. Man is of inability to tell of accuracy to his presenting world. Such inability has caused great confusion. Of what time is so does a world present as rearranged, displaying strange ordinances. Such ordinances, confusion, displays itself in themes, reoccurring arrangements displaying obscure realities. If such arrangements do not change, in that the man does not discover how to live, what perceived ordinances are so will kill him! Can the man determine truth from untruth as to depict that which is so? Is the man able to do such things? Is the man able to overcome such themes? Can he figure out how to live? Join the great expedition presenting to mankind, on the discord of life's meaning, through the overlying themes of the life of Caitlin Elizabeth Demery to discover how to live. Challenge life's meaning through a series of short prompts. Don’t Fall Asleep at The Helm – ADVENT includes Books I, II, and III of the Don’t Fall Asleep at The Helm series. It is recommended to purchase ADVENT to receive all books currently in the Don't Fall Asleep at The Helm Series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever say, “No one feels like me or understands what I’m feeling.” Ever ask, “Why me, Lord?” If these words are familiar, you’re not alone. Beginning with Eve, women are women. God’s blueprint for us has not changed, nor will it. That’s why this study is so exciting. In it, you will discover the women of the Bible are just like us! Without exception, they had plans, hopes, and dreams. They loved, laughed, and cried. They feared, sacrificed, and nurtured. They experienced good times and bad. Some had kids; some didn’t. Some were married, some weren’t. Some were wholesome while others were decadent. They experienced significant victories and shameful defeats, all of them. That’s why their stories seem familiar; these women are like us! The Bible proves that although flawed and frail, ordinary messy women were useful to our extraordinary God. Why? Because he redeemed them, the whole of their lives—the good, the bad, and the ugly. He didn’t leave one of them the way he found them. He won’t leave us lonely, unforgiven, or despairing either! If you fret, feel worn and weary; look pretty on the outside but feel pretty flawed and frail on the inside; or if sin surrounds you, this study is for you. God is into women! He loves us and makes all things new through his redeeming love! Anne is a missionary and graduate of Metro Atlanta Seminary. She is the co-founder of Open Heavens Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit discipleship ministry established in 2004. Its mission is growing others in faith and practice through the study of God’s Word. All aspects of ministry, on the streets, in classrooms, and in the Church, is focused and centered on God’s Word – the good news – the Gospel of Christ. A comprehensive study guide and workbook which invites us into the lives of Eve, Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Miriam, Rahab, Ruth, Esther, Gomer, and Mary – the Virgin Mother.
