This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays includes studies of women's political writings from Christine de Pizan to Mary Wollstonecraft and explores in depth the political ideas of the writers in their historical and intellectual context. The volume illuminates the limitations placed on women's political writings and their broader political role by the social and scholarly institutions of early modern Europe. In so doing, the authors probe legal and political restraints, distinct national and state organisation, and assumptions concerning women's proper intellectual interests. In this endeavour, the volume explores questions and subjects traditionally ignored by historians of political thought and little considered even by current feminist theorists, groups who give slight attention to women's political ideas or place women's writings within the social and intellectual structures from which they emerged and which they helped to shape.

Edmund Burke, on the Revolution in France: In a Letter to the Right Hon. The Earl of Stanhope Two parties are already formed in this country, who behold the French Revolution with a very oppofite temper To the one, it infpires the fentiment of exultation and rapture; and to the other, indignation and foam. I [hall not take upon me to confider what are the fecret pallions which have given birth to thele laf'c fentiments; and (hall content myfelf with obferving, that Mr. Burke has undertaken to be the oracle of this laft party. The abilities of this gentleman have been fully acknowledged by the impatience with which t 'e publick have waited for his obferva tions and when we co fider that he has been in a manner edu gated in the great fchool of Parliament, that he has aflit'ted in the publick councils of the Englith nation for the greater part of his life, we muf't fuppofe him fully competent to the talk he has un dertaken, of cenfuring the politicks of our neighbour kingdom, and entering into an exaet definition of thofe native rights which equally attach themfelves to every defcription of men. Book Synopsis Edmund Burke, Volume II by : F. P. Lock
Download or read book Edmund Burke, Volume II written by F. P. Lock and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-09-07 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second and concluding volume of a biography of Edmund Burke (1730-97), a key figure in eighteenth-century British and Irish politics and intellectual life. Covering the most interesting years of his life (1784-97), its leading themes are India and the French Revolution. Burke was largely responsible for the impeachment of Warren Hastings, former Governor-General of Bengal. The lengthy (145-day) trial of Hastings (which lasted from 1788 to 1795) is recognized as a landmark episode in the history of Britain's relationship with India. Lock provides the first day-by-day account of the entire trial, highlighting some of the many disputes about evidence as well as the great set speeches by Burke and others. In 1790, Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France , the earliest sustained attack on the principles of the Revolution. Continuously in print ever since, the Reflections remains the most widely read and quoted book about the Revolution. The Reflections was followed by a series of anti-revolutionary writings, as Burke maintained his crusade against the Revolution to the end of his life. In addition to these leading themes, the biography examines many other topics in its coverage of Burke's busy and varied life: his parliamentary career; his family, friendships, and philanthropy; and his often difficult and obsessive personality. There are more than thirty illustrations, including many contemporary caricatures that convey how Burke was perceived by an often hostile and uncomprehending public. Controversial in his time, Burke is now regarded as one of the greatest of orators in the English language, as well as one of the most influential political philosophers in the Western tradition.
