Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot, Vol. 2: Addressed to the People, on the Present State of Affairs in Britain and in France; With Observations on Republican Government, and Disscussions of the Principles Advanced in the Writings of Thomas Paine Our fathers believed, and we imagined and boasted, that we were free and happy, that we enjoyed privileges which distinguished Britons among the nations of Europe, that we possessed a constitution, which, combining the benefits of the various simple forms of government, avoided the peculiar inconveniences of the monarchical, the aristocratical, and the democratical plans. We concluded, that to this constitution we owed the greatness to which we have risen among the nations, and the inherent strength which has enabled us to withstand such mocks, as no other country could have survived, and to extend our influence to the extremities of the globe. It is only four years since this whole nation observed a great day of jubilee, and joined in thanks-giving to God, for those distinguished blessings which we and our fathers had for one hundred years enjoyed from the period of the Revolution. But to our great surprise and mortification, we are now told that we have been mistaken all along, that we are, and always have been, miserable and enslaved, though this was kept a secret; that we have no privileges (excepting perhaps the privilege of reviling our rulers, and of promoting sedition), that there is no such thing in Britain as a constitution at all, - that the Revolution in 1688 was no better than a farce, - that the men who conducted that transaction were usurpers, and that we have yet to begin the whole work of framing a government for the people of this Island.
