This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular and groundbreaking book was the first of its kind to focus on providing mental health nurses with the core knowledge of the physical health issues that they need for their work. Considering the risk factors and assessment priorities amongst different mental health client groups, the book provides clinical insights into how best to work with service users to ensure their health is assessed and improved. In this fully updated second edition the book addresses the latest research and policy, as well as expanding coverage of: Assessment principles and skills Adverse reactions, side effects and patient education Working with older and younger patients Multi-professional working Each chapter includes case studies, examples, diagrams and exercises for self-testing and reflection, which will help readers develop their own skills and practice. Physical Health and Well Being in Mental Health Nursing is a must-have text for students and practitioners working in mental health nursing. It is also useful reading for practice nurses, district nurses, midwives and all allied health practitioners. "People living with serious mental health problems often have significant physical health problems that are estimated to shorten their life expectancy by up to 15 years. This is unacceptable, and avoidable and mental health nurses have a crucial role to play in addressing this situation. The second edition of this excellent text is timely. Underpinned by a sound evidence base and peppered with practical examples throughout, this book contains essential knowledge and skills that will enable mental health nurses to help service users transform their health and wellbeing, and live longer, healthier and more satisfying lives. " Patrick CallaghanProfessor of Mental Nursing Head of School of Health SciencesUniversity of Nottingham "This new edition of an established text will be welcomed by students, academics and service users. The physical health of those with enduring mental illness is an important, but neglected, aspect of health care responsible for considerable, preventable, morbidity. This popular, accessible book raises the profile of this Cinderella subject in the nursing curriculum. Healthcare outcomes will be improved if practitioners follow Mike's advice throughout the text, most particularly: One small step we can take, which will make a huge difference to the physical health of mental health service users, is to regularly monitor and screen for adverse drug reactions (p.184)." Book excerpt: At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thymus is a gland that over the last two centuries has generated great awareness not only from the anatomical perspective but also for the physiological and pat- logical roles it plays in many disease processes. Prior to the early studies on its th anatomy and physiology in the 18 century, the thymus was believed to perform - usual and curious functions such as purification of the nervous system, providing a protective cushion for the vasculature of the superior mediastinum, fetal nouri- ment, or more spiritual roles such as being the seat of the soul, among others. D- th ing the 19 century important anatomical/physiological studies took place focusing on the role of the thymus in pathological conditions. However, it was not until the th middle of the 19 century that a more comprehensive analysis of the role of the thymic gland and its role in pathogenesis began to emerge. Currently, while the knowledge gained on the diverse aspects of the thymic gland has furthered our understanding of its role in a gamut of processes, more knowledge is still being sought, and by no means is a full understanding of the gland’s physi- ogy and pathology complete. Different aspects, including its purported endocrine function, its association with other autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus, among others, are under evaluation and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minipig in Biomedical Research is a comprehensive resource for research scientists on the potential and use of the minipig in basic and applied biomedical research, and the development of drugs and chemicals. Written by acknowledged experts in the field, and drawing on the authors’ global contacts and experience with regulatory authorities and the pharmaceutical and other industries, this accessible manual ranges widely over the biological, scientific, and practical uses of the minipig in the laboratory. Its coverage extends from the minipig’s origins, anatomy, genetics, immunology, and physiology to its welfare, health, and husbandry; practical dosing and examination procedures; surgical techniques; and all areas of toxicity testing and the uses of the minipig as a disease model. Regulatory aspects of its use are considered. The reader will find an extensive amount of theoretical and practical information in the pharmacology; ADME and toxicology chapters which will help scientists and managers when deciding which species to use in basic research; drug discovery and pharmacology; and toxicology studies of chemicals, biotechnology products and devices. The book discusses regulatory uses of minipigs in the evaluation of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other classes of xenobiotics. It describes features of normal health, normal laboratory values, and common diseases. It also carefully elucidates ethical and legal considerations in their supply, housing, and transport. The result is an all-inclusive and up to date manual about the experimental uses of the minipig that describes ‘How to’ and ‘Why’ and ’What to expect in the normal’, combining enthusiasm and experience with critical assessment of its values and potential problems.

This book covers the most recent technological developments and the advanced techniques used when performing such minimally invasive surgery in patients with common and rare oral and maxillofacial pathologies. The relevant basic science is reviewed, but the principal focus is on the surgical techniques themselves. These are described step by step with the aid of numerous superb color illustrations that will help the clinician to gain a full understanding of the technology and the procedures. In addition, still emerging techniques of endoscopy, navigation, and minimally invasive surgery are well covered. This text will be a premier resource for physicians who diagnose and treat oral and maxillofacial pathologies and injuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this highly acclaimed text has been extensively revised and greatly expanded to reflect the considerable advances made in our understanding of the mechanisms of asthma and rhinitis. Containing the contributions of 242 experts of international standing, presented in 133 chapters, Asthma and Rhinitis provides an up-to-date, authoritative reference for both the clinician and scientist. The global approach given in this book mirrors the universal approach to the understanding of allergic disease. The editors have carried out a thorough and radical revision of the content by adding 6 new sections and 44 new chapters. Most of this expansion is due to greatly increased coverage of the clinical aspects of asthma, with new sections on childhood asthma and on drug treatment (each drug class has its own chapter). Also, the expansion of research into the genetic basis of asthma has necessitated a whole new section on Genetics, comprising some six chapters. There are also new chapters on adult-onset asthma and the relationship of asthma to sinusitis. A new section on Asthma in Special Circumstances includes chapters on asthma in pregnancy, asthma and surgery, asthma in the elderly and asthma in the context of critical care. In bringing the Second Edition fully up to date, the book has inevitably increased in size, and is now presented in two volumes. The second edition of Asthma and Rhinitis will continue the tradition of its predecessor of providing an up-to-the-minute reference for all those involved in the management of, and research into, asthma and rhinitis.

Edited and written by a multidisciplinary group of recognized authorities from the Mayo Clinic, it presents clear guidelines on diagnosis and therapy and covers all aspects of multiple myeloma, from molecular classification and diagnosis, to risk stratification and therapy. Closely related plasma cell disorders such as solitary plasmacytoma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, and light chain amyloidosis are discussed in detail as well. The book addresses often overlooked topics, including the role of radiation therapy, vertebral augmentation, and supportive care. Our understanding of this group of disorders is developing at an unprecedented rate, and Multiple Myeloma meets the need among oncologists and hematologists for a clear, timely, and authoritative resource on their biology, diagnosis, and treatment.
