Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missionary of Reconciliation: The Role of the Doctrine of Reconciliation in the Preaching of Festo Kivengere of Uganda, 1971–1988 Alfred Olwa (Sydney, Australia) In the period 1971–1988, the Christian doctrine of reconciliation was central to Festo Kivengere’s preaching in Uganda and beyond. This doctrine so gripped Kivengere that it shaped his attitude to life, to others, and even to his enemies. He exhorted his audiences to be reconciled with God and then with their fellow human beings, as part of God’s remedy for a broken world. In his preaching, Kivengere depicts Jesus as a missionary of reconciliation who brings a fresh and alternative life, characterized by the reconciling love and peace from God. He preached the Christian doctrine of reconciliation into a Uganda where Christians lived under the horrors of Amin’s rule and its aftermath. According to Kivengere, the world changes through the preaching of the reconciliation centered in Jesus Christ.

Patrick Ssempeera shares a collection of ideas focused on Africa, which is less industrialized than much of the world but quickly catching up. He tackles a variety of topics in eight chapters that encompass attitude, spirituality, shaping people into nurturing adults, government policy, promoting renewability, and fostering healthy and intimate integrations. Get answers to questions such as: • What can Africa learn from rampant levels of pollution in China and elsewhere? • How is love of culture connected to sustainable development? • What can Africans do to work toward a self-driven future? • How can spiritual leaders promote a sustainable agenda? The author also explores how politics, education, optimism, industrialization, and globalization are connected to sustainable development. Steeped in history, filled with insights, and laced with diagrams, this book is an essential resource for anyone interested in sustainable development—particularly in Africa.

Download or read book Uganda: A Modern History written by Jan Jelmert Jørgensen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda: A Modern History (1981) provides a comprehensive political, social and economic history of Uganda from the beginnings of colonial rule in 1888. It focuses particularly on the development of the Ugandan economy and demonstrates how the economy became structurally dependent on world capitalism during the colonial period and how this has affected its subsequent development. The book also deals with the political and social tendencies which shaped Ugandan society in both the colonial and postcolonial period. The first four chapters examine the initial colonial occupation and the colonial state’s role in the rural nexus of chiefs, peasants and migrant workers. They also look at the colonial state and the context of the wider national, regional and international economy and analyse the African nationalist response and the formation of political parties to take control of the postcolonial state. The second part of the book considers the political alliances and economic strategies of the Obote regime and the events of Amin’s military regime. The epilogue looks at events since the fall of the Amin regime and suggests ways in which Uganda may be able to tackle its underlying economic problems.
