Book excerpt: The present book has been designed to serve the students of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Forestry. In most of the books, the objective type questions judge the students on the basis of their ability to memorize, because of the way they are formulated. It is important to be able to remember the year of historical events, the scientists involved and who named what to make one remember the landmark contributions of the people on a particular subject. Along with these kinds of questions, majority of the questions in this book have been designed to assess the candidate s understanding of the subject. It is perhaps for the first time where questions have four to six choice statements, which are to be understood to find the right answer. One has to think and remember what he has learnt to be able to answer these questions. There are some books on objective type questions on the subject of Plant Breeding and a very few on Genetics but there is hardly any book, which deals with Tissue Culture, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Forestry. All these subjects are related as many postgraduate students of Genetics and Plant Breeding take Biotechnology as a minor subject whereas those of Biotechnology take Biochemistry or Genetics and Plant Breeding as a minor subject. Also, undergraduates in agricultural universities study courses on all these subjects including Forestry

Book excerpt: Because of rapid developments in the biotechnology industry—and the wide range of disciplines that contribute to its collective growth—there is a heightened need to more carefully plan and fully integrate biotech development projects. Despite the wealth of operations experience and associated literature available, no single book has yet offered a comprehensive, practical guide to fundamentals. Filling the void, Biotechnology Operations: Principles and Practices reflects this integrative philosophy, serving as a practical guide for students, professionals, or anyone else with interests in the biotech industry. Although many books emphasize specific technical aspects of biotech, this is perhaps the first to integrate essential concepts of product development and scientific and management skills with the seven functional areas of biotechnology: Biomanufacturing Clinical trials Nonclinical studies Project management Quality assurance Quality control Regulatory affairs A practical roadmap to optimizing biotechnology operations, this reference illustrates how to use specific product planning, design, and project management processes to seamlessly merge plans and efforts in the key functional areas. Applying lessons learned throughout the nascent history of biotech, author Michael Roy highlights developmental principles that could bring future products to market more safely and efficiently. Drawing from his experiences working in industry and teaching a graduate course at the University of Wisconsin, this hotly anticipated book clarifies basic methodologies and practices to help reduce risks and resolve problems as future technological discoveries are developed into tangible products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an exciting time to follow the new developments in the field of biotechnology and its wider applications in the different areas. The whole genomes of over 1000 viruses and over 100 microbes can now be found in Entrez Genome. The genomes represent both completely sequenced organisms and those for which sequencing is still in progress. The three main domains of life - bacteria, archaea, and eukaryota - are represented, as well as many viruses and organelles. The exponential increase of the sequence data lead to the development of the new "Bioinformatics" field in order to attempt making sense, at least biological sense, out of all the new and fast data. It will take also other techniques such as "functional genomics" to link the gap between a specific phenotype or a treatment and a gene sequence. Functional genomics tools are therefore important for the accurate molecular diagnosis/prognosis, target discovery validation needed for drug development and novel targets for antibiotics development. Functional genomics are also important for the confirmation of therapy in pharmacogenomics studies. Biotechnology is in many respects shaping our life and affecting our means of production and the creation of jobs. Progress in the applications of biotechnology depends on a wide base of basic as well as applied sciences. The output of biotechnology has already proved itself in many diverse fields from health tobiomining and from agriculture to enzyme "breeding". It is therefore difficult to follow all of the current as well as the potential applications of biotechnology. The objective of the Biotechnology Annual Review series is to attempt to provide readers with the needed indepth knowledge, by reviewing specific topics in biotechnology in each issue. The philosophy behind this series is to encourage good reviews to make it easier for readers to keep in touch with progress and applications of biotechnology. Reviews on topics related to regulatory affairs, social impact of biotechnology, biodiversity, biosafety, public acceptance and patent issues are also encouraged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of humankind's greatest tools have been forged in the research laboratory. Who could argue that medical advances like antibiotics, blood transfusions, and pacemakers have not improved the quality of people's lives? But with each new technological breakthrough there comes an array of consequences, at once predicted and unpredictable, beneficial and hazardous. Outcry over recent developments in the reproductive and genetic sciences has revealed deep fissures in society's perception of biotechnical progress. Many are concerned that reckless technological development, driven by consumerist impulses and greedy entrepreneurialism, has the potential to radically shift the human condition—and not for the greater good. Biotechnology and the Human Good builds a case for a stewardship deeply rooted in Judeo-Christian theism to responsibly interpret and assess new technologies in a way that answers this concern. The authors jointly recognize humans not as autonomous beings but as ones accountable to each other, to the world they live in, and to God. They argue that to question and critique how fields like cybernetics, nanotechnology, and genetics might affect our future is not anti-science, anti-industry, or anti-progress, but rather a way to promote human flourishing, common sense, and good stewardship. A synthetic work drawing on the thought of a physician, ethicists, and a theologian, Biotechnology and the Human Good reminds us that although technology is a powerful and often awe-inspiring tool, it is what lies in the heart and soul of who wields this tool that truly makes the difference in our world.
