Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obituary Record of Graduates of Yale College Deceased During the Academical Year Ending in June, 1886: Including the Record of a Few Who Died Previously, Hitherto Unreported (Presented at the Meeting of the Alumni, June 29th, 1886) John hastings, the second son of the Hon. John and Sibyl (dickinson) Hastings, of Hatfield, born in that town on the 22d of December, 1791. He resided in Hatfield until about 1833, when he removed to Heath, on the northern border of the State, and thence in 1842 to Onondaga Valley, a village four or five miles out of the city of Syracuse, N. Y. He remained a resident of Onondaga Valley until his sudden death there, without previous illness, of paralysis of the heart, on January 21, 1886, in his 95th year. His life was exemplary, and he was held in the highest respect by the community. He served as justice of the peace until he declined a re - election, and as town-clerk for twenty-eight years - continuing in that office until his death. He retained all his faculties until the very last. He married, January 23, 1823, Lucretia, daughter of Daniel Ward, of Petersham, Mass, who died June 27, 1873.
