Depart mental lines were drawn too close. One graduate felt that hot enough of the humanities and social sciences were required. But the general reaction was plainly against required courses. A closely related feeling was indicated to the effect that major requirements were often so heavy that the student was not able to take other work which would have been valuable. On the other hand, one recent graduate felt that botany should be added as a requirement in the zoology major. Here, as elsewhere, it is not possible to harmonize all the points of view. A number of alumni felt that there was too little freedom in the courses. One recent graduate, a chem ist, felt that this might be obtained by allowing stu dents to add extra courses to their schedules. Others recommend that students be led to do more individual work, more in the way of research, fewer lectures, less emphasis on course examinations and more extensive use of comprehensive examinations. A number of gradu ates, especially of the period before 1920, felt that their college work had been too easy. As I look back over my Oberlin years I realize that it was all too easy. The teachers tolerated too much mediocre work on the part of the student. Another says that It was possible to slide by with just - passing grades. Mauro-cottone has made a series of variations on this tune, painting the lily, as it were, with canons, pedal variations and a triumphant close. All of these were played with dis tinction by Mr. Holden. The fleetness of the Prelude, the loping subject of the Fugue in Dupre's Prelude and Fug-ue in G minor with the many demands that the virtuoso French organist has crowded in his score, sounded in clarity. Two short numbers by karg-elert succeeded, fol lowed by the sportive Echo by Pietro Yon, in which biting strings were answered by rippling flutes. Certainly one of the most important modern works for organ is Wil lan's Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue. In the quiet Introduction, as out of the void there steals in mysteriously a phrase which soon expands into a fiery dramatic episode. A highly interesting chromatic theme serves as the basis of the rich Passacaglia in which the variations progress to the subject of the Fugue, ris ing through the answering voices to a stupendous climax. Mr. I'iolden brought to this as he did to each number on the program a conception of the work as a whole which was not marred by excessive changes in registration. There was clar ity, fine choice of color and balance, and a sense of authority which was furthered by the fact that the whole concert was played without notes. Last year there were this year only 52 including both Col lege and Conservatory. There are 9 students though with advanced standing, one graduate student and two part - time students who can claim Oberlin paren tage. The 52 name 70 parents, 31 mothers and 39 fathers, who have trod the campus beneath the elms. The 23 women have an equal number of mothers and fathers, 15 each, but the 28 men have only 16 mothers to 24 fathers in this group. This raises an interesting question; why are more fathers sending their sons to Ober lin? Six women and 12 men had both parents attend Oberlin. Oi the women's parents 20 are gradu ates and 9 non - grads; of the men's par ents 27 are grads and 14 non - grads. The class of 1907 contributes 6 parents, that of 1911 five. Alas, all flesh is grass! The other eve ning, with the chapel sold out even to standing room, the audience suffered a keen disappointment when Lawrence Tibbett was unable to sing for us. As he explained to the audience it was the first time in seven years that he had been unable to fill an engagement, but above a C his voice would not come, for he was suffering from laryngitis. Even with a capacity schedule of engagements he assured us that his manager and he would do every thing possible to arrange an early appear ance. We are happy that this has been arranged and we will have a return engagement on January 8. There are those who recall waiting one evening for Thibaud and finally hearing that his chauffeur had become lost en route from Cleveland and was near Berea.
