Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Energy Politics by : Kathleen J. Hancock
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Energy Politics written by Kathleen J. Hancock and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global, regional, and local energy landscape has changed dramatically in the twenty-first century. Many factors have affected what we know about energy: a consensus among scientists on climate change and related support for renewable energy, evolving energy and resource extraction technologies, growing resource demand in the developing world, new regional and global energy governance actors, new major fossil fuel discoveries on land and underwater in states that have previously been under-resourced, rising interest in corporate social responsibility in energy companies, and the need for energy justice. The Oxford Handbook of Energy Politics synthesizes the diverse literature on these topics to provide a foundational resource for teaching and research on critical energy issues in international relations and comparative politics. Through chapters authored by both scholars and practitioners, the Handbook further develops the energy politics scholarship and community, and generates sophisticated new work that will benefit all who work on energy issues.
Book Synopsis Energy in Brazil by : Antônio Dias Leite
Download or read book Energy in Brazil written by Antônio Dias Leite and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly developing countries such as China and India are the real main players in the climate debate, with the potential for massive increases in their carbon emissions in coming years. Brazil is often included in their number, yet this country is in fact notable for its exceptionally high reliance on energy from renewable sources -- approaching 50%. However, the fact that much of this energy comes from hydropower and biofuels, and recent discoveries of massive oil reserves off of the Brazilian coast, are a recipe for controversy.

Book Synopsis Liquid Biofuels: Emergence, Development and Prospects by : Sherrill Edwards
Download or read book Liquid Biofuels: Emergence, Development and Prospects written by Sherrill Edwards and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergy is coming to be seen as a priority on the international agenda, with the use of liquid biofuels a key strategy in the attempt to meet both the demand for environmental sustainability and the energy needs of countries. The growth in the production and use of biofuels around the world has led to increased interest and discussion about this subject. Given the dynamics of this phenomenon, the organizers of this book, based on more than 10 years experience of joint research on this subject, seek to address key issues relating to the production and marketing of liquid biofuels using the Brazilian experience with ethanol and biodiesel as an illustrative case, as well as the experiences of the leading producers and consumers of biofuels. The topics to be covered in this book include the role of public policies in fostering the emergence of the biofuels industry, the main socio-economic, environmental, technological aspects and the prospects for the sector. The conceptual and methodological bases that provide analytical support to the book are based on recent research published in indexed journals. The structure and content of the book seek to address some central issues regarding: How the biofuel industries have emerged and developed in different countries? What factors have been crucial to the success or failure of different production initiatives? What are the main socio-economic-environmental impacts of the production and consumption of liquid biofuels? How are national and international markets for liquid biofuels being structured? To what extent and/or in what conditions can the experiences and lessons learned at the national level be transferred and adapted in other countries? Finally, based on the scenarios, the prospects for liquid biofuels will be discussed.
Book Synopsis A Ditadura Militar e a Governança da Água no Brasil (The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil) by : Fernanda de Souza Braga
Download or read book A Ditadura Militar e a Governança da Água no Brasil (The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil) written by Fernanda de Souza Braga and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. The dictatorial regime (1964-1985) created a "standard" for the construction of these great structures, through an institutional and legal framework, which benefited the Brazilian business elite but also, through the creation of a popular imagination, which shows itself lasting progress on the country's progress and development. The suspension of security, the fragility of institutional environmental structures, the disrespect for indigenous reserves, the lack of clarity about the concept of "affected population" and the non-payment of fair compensation were identified as one of the main challenges for a democratic water governance in the country. In the late 1970s, the Dam-Affected Movement (MAB) began its organization and is also studied in this research. The study is an important and insightful academic contribution to the understanding of the main bottlenecks of effective water governance in Brazil.
Book Synopsis Regulatory Support for Off-Grid Renewable Electricity by : Ngozi Chinwa Ole
Download or read book Regulatory Support for Off-Grid Renewable Electricity written by Ngozi Chinwa Ole and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of law in enabling and addressing the barriers to the development of off-grid renewable electricity (OGRE). The limited development of OGRE is ascribed to a host of social, economic, and legal barriers, including the problem of initial capital costs, existing subsidies for conventional electricity, and lack of technological and institutional capacity. Through the analyses of selected case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America, this book discusses the typical barriers to the development of OGRE from a global perspective and examines the role of the law in addressing them. Drawing together the lessons learnt from the case studies, this book offers robust recommendations on how the development of OGRE will support the goal of achieving universal access to low carbon, reliable, and sustainable electricity globally. This volume will be of great interest to students, scholars, policy makers, investors, and practitioners in the fields of energy law and policy, climate change, and renewable energy development.

Book Synopsis The Governance of Regulators Driving Performance at Brazil’s National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation by : OECD
Download or read book The Governance of Regulators Driving Performance at Brazil’s National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-05 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As “market referees”, regulators contribute to the delivery of essential public utilities. Their organisational culture, behaviour, actions and governance are important factors in how they, and the sectors they oversee, perform. The OECD Performance Assessment Framework for Economic Regulators (PAFER) looks at the institutions, processes and practices that can create an organisational culture of performance and results. This report uses PAFER to assess both the internal and external governance of Brazil’s National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation (ANA). The review offers recommendations for the regulator to build upon its strong technical reputation and good practices. It proposes an integrated set of recommendations to help ANA best fulfil its roles relating to water resource management and water-use regulation, dam safety, and water supply and sanitation.
Book Synopsis Industrial Uses of Biomass Energy by : Frank Rosillo-Calle
Download or read book Industrial Uses of Biomass Energy written by Frank Rosillo-Calle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-09-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Uses of Biomass Energy demonstrates that energy-rich vegetation, biomass, is a key renewable energy resource for the future. Brazil, uniquely, has a recent history of large-scale biomass industrial uses that makes it a specially important test-bed both for the development of biomass technology and its utilisation, and for understanding how this is shaped by political and socio-economic forces. The book analyses the cause for this and the alternatives. It is argued that Brazil's experience with the development for industrial biomass use provides wider lessons and insights in the context of the international movement for sustainable economic development. This book is an interdisciplinary, multi-author work, based upon a recently completed international study by Brazilian and British experts and will prove a valuable reference to all those working in this field.
