You will be encouraged as you read how to deal with the loss of a key staff member or the death of a wife. Practical, how-to-do-it instructions are given on how to train young staff members, with a focus on mentoring. You will discover that God can use you in whatever task he has given you to do. O Mighty Warrior will teach you to not only believe in yourself but also to trust in our mighty God, who will give you the power and strength to serve.

Book excerpt: The Great Rebellion in heaven is over. Being forever cast from the kingdom, Satan and his followers now wage a different battle-a battle for the souls of God's chosen ones. When Kevin Foster and his wife, Teri, receive the news that their youngest son is dying of cancer, their lives are devastated. With their world torn apart, their other two children, Emily and Josh, must face a heartbreak and fear of their own as the family foundation crumbles. Seeing the vulnerability and weakness of the Fosters, Bela, commander of the fallen ones, wastes no time in sending his demons to break the family bond. But the prize he's after is not Kevin or Teri; it is Josh. Bela's orders are to snatch the very soul of the young saint before God's strength and power take root in his heart. Standing between the fallen ones and their victims is the army of the Lord ... the mighty angelic warriors. And they will stop at nothing to protect the saints of God under their watch. As the Lord's angelic warriors arise to protect the Fosters, the team of Bomani, Speranza, Elian, and Analise, under the leadership of Commander Zedekiah, find themselves pitted against their former friends Dorjan, Talman, and Mara. The line is drawn as darkness and light collide in a clash of forces so powerful that nothing can stop the mighty angelic warriors.

Book excerpt: For years, Vine’s Expository Dictionary has been the standard word study tool for pastors and laypeople, selling millions of copies. But sixty-plus years of scholarship have shed extensive new light on the use of biblical Greek and Hebrew, creating the need for a new, more accurate, more thorough dictionary of Bible words. William Mounce, whose Greek grammar has been used by more than 100,000 college and seminary students, is the editor of this new dictionary, which will become the layperson’s gold standard for biblical word studies. Mounce’s is ideal for the reader with limited or no knowledge of Greek or Hebrew who wants greater insight into the meanings of biblical words to enhance Bible study. It is also the perfect reference for busy pastors needing to quickly get at the heart of a word’s meaning without wading through more technical studies. What makes Mounce’s superior to Vine’s? The most accurate, in-depth definitions based on the best of modern evangelical scholarship Both Greek and Hebrew words are found under each English entry (Vine’s separates them) Employs both Strong’s and G/K numbering systems (Vine’s only uses Strong’s) Mounce’s accuracy is endorsed by leading scholars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume in a trilogy of prayer manuals compiled by Publishers Weekly religion editor Phyllis Tickle as a contemporary Book of Hours to guide Christians gently yet authoritatively through the daily offices. The Divine Hours is the first major literary and liturgical reworking of the sixth-century Benedictine Rule of fixed-hour prayer. This beautifully conceived and thoroughly modern three-volume guide will appeal to the theological novice as well as to the ecclesiastical sophisticate. Making primary use of the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, The Divine Hours is also a companion to the New Jerusalem Bible, from which it draws its Scripture readings. The trilogy blends prayer and praise in a way that, while extraordinarily fresh, respects and builds upon the ancient wisdom of Christianity. The first book in the set, Prayers for Summertime, filled with prayers, psalms, and readings, is one readers will turn to again and again. Compact in size, it is perfect for those seeking greater spiritual depth. As a contemporary Book of Hours, The Divine Hours: Prayers for Summertime heralds a renewal of the tradition of disciplined daily prayer, and will whet the hunger of a large and eager audience for the follow-up autumn/winter and spring volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of a translator should ever be to hold the mirror upto his author. That being so, his chief duty is to represent so far as practicable the manner in which his author's ideas have been expressed, retaining if possible at the sacrifice of idiom and taste all the peculiarities of his author's imagery and of language as well. In regard to translations from the Sanskrit, nothing is easier than to dish up Hindu ideas, so as to make them agreeable to English taste. But the endeavour of the present translator has been to give in the following pages as literal a rendering as possible of the great work of Vyasa. To the purely English reader there is much in the following pages that will strike as ridiculous. Those unacquainted with any language but their own are generally very exclusive in matters of taste. Having no knowledge of models other than what they meet with in their own tongue, the standard they have formed of purity and taste in composition must necessarily be a narrow one. The translator, however, would ill-discharge his duty, if for the sake of avoiding ridicule, he sacrificed fidelity to the original. He must represent his author as he is, not as he should be to please the narrow taste of those entirely unacquainted with him. Mr. Pickford, in the preface to his English translation of the Mahavira Charita, ably defends a close adherence to the original even at the sacrifice of idiom and taste against the claims of what has been called 'Free Translation,' which means dressing the author in an outlandish garb to please those to whom he is introduced. In the preface to his classical translation of Bhartrihari's Niti Satakam and Vairagya Satakam, Mr. C.H. Tawney says, "I am sensible that in the present attempt I have retained much local colouring.

Book excerpt: As an especially beautiful and pure example of the archaic epic styles that were once current among the hunting and fishing peoples of northern Asia, the Ainu epic folklore is of immense literary value. This collection and English translation by Donald Philippi contains thirty-three representative selections from a number of epic genres including mythic epics, culture hero epics, women's epics, and heroic epics. This is the first time, outside of Japan, that the Ainu epic folklore has been treated in a comprehensive manner. Originally published in 1979. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of Living is the prayer and liturgy resource for the Lindisfarne Community, a new monastic religious order in the broadly Anglican-Celtic tradition. The motherhouse of the community is in Ithaca, NY. At the heart of the ancient monastic tradition was an emphasis on daily prayer and Bible reading. In the new monasticism, we are again finding our spiritual basis in a disciplined life of prayer, study, work and rest. The idea of a Daily Office is an ancient one in the Christian church. The daily prayers, Psalms, readings and meditations make for a balanced spiritual practice. The Way of Living is intended to be flexible and can be read each morning and/or evening or at some other suitable time. This edition is unique in using inclusive language for all its prayers, Bible readings, meditations, Psalms and Canticles, the “little songs” of scripture. You can read about the Lindisfarne Community on their website: http://www.lindisfarnecommunity.org You may contact them by e-mail: [email protected]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have long been a staple in the devotional life of religious people. Composed thousands of years ago, they bring every emotion known to humankind -- from anger to adoration -- into the presence of God. In many monastic traditions all 150 Psalms are prayed each week. But those who live outside the cloister, even if they love the Psalms, would find such a schedule difficult to maintain. In Prayers to the God of My Life, Lisa Hamilton provides small portions for daily reading each morning and evening for 365 days of the year. Matched both to nature's seasonal cycle of the year and the church's liturgical calendar, these Psalm fragments invite us to focus on all aspects of our relationship with God: praise, trust, fearfulness, pain, confession, thanksgiving, longing, the need for guidance, and more. A question worthy of reflection or a suggested action accompanies each selection. The Psalm translation is from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. Excellent for use as a daily devotional, a companion to fixed-hour prayer, or for use by groups.
