Book excerpt: The book is about the Scheduled Castes of Odisha and it speaks volumes in itself as it deals with the atrocities the scheduled caste people are inflicted into. Poverty, unemployment, and ostracisation have added misery into their lives and it is the responsibility of everyone to help them live a decent and honorable life. How far has the state fulfilled its constitutional obligations to assure every citizen life of dignity? What has been the pace of socio-economic progress in Odisha? Has it been fast, fair, and equitable? To what extent have the Constitutional objectives and aspirations in respect of the scheduled Castes, women, children, and the other weaker sections of the society been realized and fulfilled? The book finally raises some key issues and identifies critical areas for action that may help the state realize and fulfill its constitutional commitments. One of the key concerns for the society in rural areas of the state is that unemployed youths continue to be used by extremist groups to engage them in anti-government activities and religious riots

Download or read book The Poorest and Hungry written by Joachim Von Braun and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2009 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have the lives of the world's poorest, neediest people improved over the past few decades? What policies have lifted some people out of the worst forms of poverty, and what conditions keep others mired within it? The Poorest and Hungry: Assessment, Analyses, and Actions answers such questions, bringing together studies of both what causes and what reduces severe poverty from a diverse group of development specialists. The book focuses on the poorest and hungry in society and identifies areas for action. Stable economic growth; targeted social programs and insurance that invest in and protect nutrition, health, and education; and political and social inclusion of previously marginalized groups emerge as the essential requirements for poverty reduction, and this book's contributors identify strategies for promoting all three. The Poorest and Hungry is an important resource for policymakers, development specialists, and others concerned with helping the world's poorest people.
Book Synopsis Spatial Diversity and Dynamics in Resources and Urban Development by : Ashok K. Dutt
Download or read book Spatial Diversity and Dynamics in Resources and Urban Development written by Ashok K. Dutt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This double-volume work focuses on socio-demographics and the use of such data to support strategic resource management and planning initiatives. Papers go beyond explanations of methods, technique and traditional applications to explore new intersections in the dynamic relationship between the utilization and management of resources, and urban development. International authors explore numerous experiences, characteristics of development and decision-making influences from across Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as recounting examples from America and Africa. Papers propound techniques and methods used in geographical research such as support vector machines, socio-economic correlates and travel behaviour analysis. In this volume the contributions examine issues such as natural resource and environmental management, livelihoods issues in the context of climate change, land markets and land trusts, adaptive management of wildlife sanctuaries, ground water scarcity, flood hazards and flood plain management, non-conventional energy resources, community forestry and management and land use and land cover change. The significance of these topics lie in the pace and volume of change as is reflected through continued development within established fields of inquiry and the introduction of significantly new approaches during the last decade. Readers are invited to consider the dynamics of spatial expansion of urban areas and economic development, and to ex plore conceptual discussion of the innovations in and challenges on urbanization processes, urban spaces themselves and both resource management and environmental management. Together, the two volumes contribute to the interdisciplinary literature on regional resources and urban development by collating recent research with geography at its core. Scholars of urban geography, human geography, urbanism and sustainable development will be particularly interested in this book.

Book Synopsis India's Undernourished Children by :
Download or read book India's Undernourished Children written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The prevalence of child undernutrition in India is among the highest in the world, nearly double that of Sub-Saharan Africa, with dire consequences for morbidity, mortality, productivity and economic growth. Drawing on qualitative studies and quantitative evidence from large household surveys, this book explores the dimensions of child undernutrition in India and examines the effectiveness of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)program, India's main early child development intervention, in addressing it. Although levels of undernutrition in India declined modestly during the 1990s, the reductions lagged behind those achieved by other countries with similar economic growth. Nutritional inequalities across different states and socioeconomic and demographic groups remain large. Although the ICDS program appears to be well-designed and well-placed to address the multi-dimensional causes of malnutrition in India, several problems exist that prevent it from reaching its potential. The book concludes with a discussion of a number of concrete actions that can be taken to bridge the gap between the policy intentions of ICDS and its actual implementation."

Download or read book New Governance Paradigm written by Thodupuzha M. Joseph and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization is one of the most debated concepts in contemporary discussions in the domain of development. The emerging paradigm of governance in the area of globalization reframes the roles of institutions of state, market and civil society. This involves questioning of the erstwhile dominant role of other institutions. Weakening and erosion of major modern institutions of governance such as legislature, bureaucracy and judiciary in third world reflects the growing governance crisis. Social tension and conflicts based on identity are on rise. This has significant implications on issues such as social equity, justice and environment that affect the life of people, especially the third world poor. This collection addresses some pertinent issues that emanate from the emerging paradigm of governance. The major areas of concern are globalization, civil society, gender social services and infrastructure. This documentation will help carry forward creation of knowledge and formulation of strategies in the field of rural management to meet the future challenge of rural development.
Book Synopsis The Right to Good Governance by : K. Mohandas
Download or read book The Right to Good Governance written by K. Mohandas and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good governance is not a fundamental right under the Constitution of India. Did the makers of the Constitution presume that the framework and the institutional structure designed by them would ensure that the people got social, economic, and political justice, liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship, and equality of status and of opportunity? Why is Satyam missing from mainstream Indian activities, although the National motto Satyameva Jayate is ubiquitous as part of the National Symbol, appearing in all national documents, including in currency notes? The perceived charm of the office of the District Officer is a major factor in attracting some of the brightest and most diligent among the Indian youth to the Indian Administrative Service. But should young graduates spend their energy in the prime of their youth on preparation for the Civil Services Examination, the chances of success being statistically low? Should professionally qualified persons attempt to join the Civil Services, with the risk of becoming professionally unfit with the passage of time if they do not succeed? These questions are only incidental. The book discusses key governance issues from an unbiased perspective.
