The nanodelivery systems typically consist of the food bioactive compound encapsulated and stabilized in food grade ingredients such as lipids, proteins or polysaccharides with diameters ranging from 10 nm to 1000 nm. Among these, the lipid based delivery systems such as nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoliposomes and micelles are widely studied for the delivery of lipophilic bioactive compounds. These delivery vehicles improve the solubility, permeability, stability and bioavailability of the lipophilic compounds thereby enhancing their potential for oral delivery and functional food development. On the other hand, the hydrophilic bioactives are delivered through protein, polysaccharide or biopolymer based colloidal nanosystems such as hydrogels, nanogels and polymer nanoparticles. The major concern other than solubility is the intestinal permeability of the micronutrients. For instance, the delivery system for compounds with poor intestinal permeability and low solubility need to be carefully designed using suitable lipids and surfactants. Maintaining hydration is also a challenge particularly during hot weather, as there is aversion to the smell and taste of warm water, particularly when chlorine is present. A novel nutrient delivery system has been developed to provide Warfighters on-demand access to flavored electrolyte- and carbohydrate-enhanced drinks, to provide hydration, and energy to sustain work. This technical report documents efforts to obtain user feedback regarding the acceptability of an early prototype system. The combined results of two different survey groups (n= 22) reveal that 59% of Soldiers rated the device as a "moderately" to "extremely valuable" and 68% reported that they would be "moderately" to "extremely likely" to use the device if it were available to them. 73% felt it could improve their performance. Recommended improvements included making hardware components more rugged, improving engineering to minimize leakage, adding more positive control of the on-off system, and creating a variety of flavored beverages with high taste acceptability.

Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Major challenges include the loss of nutrients in the soil and nutrient-deficient plants, which result in a lower crop yield and quality. Subsequently, consumption of such crops leads to malnourishment in humans, especially in underprivileged and rural populations. One convenient approach to tackle nutrient deficiency in plants is via the use of fertilizers; however, this method suffers from lower uptake efficiency in plants. Another approach to combat nutrient deficiency in humans is via the use of supplements and diet modifications; however, these approaches are less affordably viable in economically challenged communities and in rural areas. Therefore, the use of nano-fertilizers to combat this problem holds the greatest potential. Additionally, nanotechnology can be used to meet other challenges in agriculture including enhancing crop yield, protection from insect pests and animals, and by use of nano-pesticides and nano-biosensors to carry out the remediation of polluted soils. The future use of nanomaterials in soil ecosystems will be influenced by their capability to interact with soil constituents and the route of nanoparticles into the environment includes both natural and anthropogenic sources. The last decade has provided increasing research on the impact and use of nanoparticles in plants, animals, microbes, and soils, and yet these studies often lacked data involving the impact of nanoparticles on biotic and abiotic stress factors. This book provides significant recent research on the use of nano-fertilizers, which can have a major impact on components of an ecosystem. This work should provide a basis to further study these potential key areas in order to achieve sustainable and safe application of nanoparticles in agriculture.
