Book excerpt: Ever try to keep track of the difference between dysphagia and dysphasia and aphagia and aphasia? Having trouble remembering where to put the ekg leads? Is your patient's rhythm a second degree, type I or a second degree type II? Nursing school can be a pain in the butt. Once you think you've got something down, another subject is thrown at you. It's nearly impossible to keep track of everything as a nursing student. You think you know your stuff, but have a hard time getting it out from your brain when it's needed.I feel your pain. I was in your shoes once and had the same problems in nursing school. I found mnemonics to be a life-saver for exams, clinicals, and questioning from preceptors. Some of the memory tricks in this book are well-known, but most of them were made up over the years by yours truly. Mnemonics are not meant to teach you the information. Rather, they are meant to jog your memory, which already holds the information somewhere deep inside. These are an aid, not an education. Inside, you'll find simple mnemonic devices that can be drawn from at a moment's notice. The idea isn't to retain the entire book after reading it for the first time. Instead, use it as a guide in your journey through nursing school and beyond. Whenever you come to a nursing topic you need reinforcement on, see if there's something here that might be able to help you.Even if you decide that the book isn't for you, visit us at www.kickassnursing.com. Whenever you come to a nursing topic you need reinforcement on, see if there's something here that might be able to help you. Do you know off the top of your head when you should be concerned about a patient's mole? If you remember the mnemonic ABCDE, then it will be easy! *A = Asymmetry* B = Border irregular* C = Color irregular* D = Diameter usually greater than 0.5 cm* E = Elevation irregularWhat if you are looking at an x-ray and notice something weird that shouldn't be there. If you see HOLES in the chest, that is WEIRD. What are the possible differentials?*W = Wegner's syndrome*E = Embolic (pulmonary, septic)*I = Infection (anaerobes, pneumocystis, TB)*R = Rheumatoid (Necrobiotic nodules)*D = Developmental cysts (sequestration)*H = Histiocytosis*O = Oncological*L = Lymphangeioleiomyomatosis*E = Environmental/ occupational*S = Sarcoid. Book excerpt: Mnemonics are devices that help us remember information. We remember best when events have an intense emotional response. Nursing mnemonics help stimulate some emotion through a picture, acronym, rhyme, or other devices. Nurses have come up with a few mnemonic devices that may help you remember many complicated processes when planning, practicing patient advocacy, and nursing care. They say that the best nurses are excellent at obtaining assessments, and this is true! If nurses would look at the nursing process, assessment is the first and key step. Gathering information about the patient will provide clues for what care you can give and what you can intervene. If you have a weak foundation in assessment, the rest of the process follows. One way to help retain nursing information is through the help of nursing mnemonics. To be more systematic, here are some nursing mnemonics and tricks (assessment and nursing skills) you can use to accurately and quickly assess a variety of patients in different conditions and in various situations. These are also some nursing mnemonics and tips about Maternal and Child Health Nursing (includes obstetric and gynecological disorders, and maternity nursing) that can help you understand the core concepts more easily! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mnemonics are a way to improve your memory and help it to work better. What exactly are mnemonics? Can you use them to improve your memory? What are three great examples of memory mementos?I will give you three great examples of mnemonics memory techniques. If you have memorized a phrase, you can write it down or type it on a card and remember it later. For example, the first two examples are: Write the first phrase on a card and write the second phrase on a slip of paper. Memorize this phrase. You can practice this until you can say the word without thinking. A good mnemonist should always use a "keyboard stroke" or a short, crisp sound when writing a phrase. This creates an association in your mind between the item and the sound made by that stroke. If you start typing the word and then remember it, you may realize that you cannot order the phrase because you have a mental association with the idea. This technique, called typing in a word, is what is called a memorial. Another excellent example of mnemonics memory techniques is an assembly language. Have you ever been in a meeting where you had to say something like, "The secretary is currently waiting for you in the conference room?" If you never said that, how would you know when you needed to say it? Another excellent example of mnemonic memory techniques is the language of music. It may not be common knowledge, but actually, piano players use a form of memory known as memory stretching. This means that if you memorize an entire sheet of music, rather than focusing on every note, you create new associations, which improves your ability to recall what you've previously memorized. This technique is also helpful in learning how to play an instrument and improving your speaking voice. Suppose you were to ask a person unfamiliar with the piano an example of mnemonic memory techniques. In that case, they might tell you that it is simply using critical letters to remember words. While this is an excellent explanation, it does not give you enough information about how mnemonics work. The most effective techniques will take you step-by-step through the process, including songs, hand movements, and phrases. You might even be familiar with some of these memory strategies already, such as flashcards that include words in song form. Or mnemonics cards, which have pictures that can be used to help you remember phrases or words. But if you were to look at this from a different perspective, would these examples help allow you to remember things? In other words, do they provide information about how things work when used in actual life? And do they make you think about things in a more abstract way? This is what mnemonics is all about. These memory techniques are designed to encourage you to use the pieces of information you have gathered to help you remember. This is not to say that all of your data is relevant or useful. It may be that you need to revise old information or learn new skills. But having a mental map or list of the relevant parts of the activity can make it far easier to recall the main points. Also, these rhymes and mnemonic devices are not intended to replace books and other reading material. Instead, they are a valuable addition to help you improve your memory skills, mainly if you already use several of these techniques.

Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
