Book excerpt: The current qualitative phenomenological study involved identifying and exploring the factors contributing to the nursing faculty shortage of Western Massachusetts. Through interviews, 24 participants, including 5 for the pilot study, identified and discussed the reasons why they chose not to teach, or to continue to teach, and why registered nurses did not choose faculty teaching as a career track in education. Poor salaries were the primary factor contributing to the shortage of nursing faculty in Western Massachusetts. Participants provided personal insight and suggestions concerning various educational institutions in Western Massachusetts and participated in a Massachusetts survey that examined many suggestions to alleviate the faculty shortage in Western Massachusetts.

Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book excerpt: Rich, descriptive data gathered in this study revealed strategies employed by deans and directors, as they struggled to recruit and retain faculty at a time of burgeoning demand for the education of nurses. The single most important barrier was the lack of nurse faculty holding doctorate degrees that would make them eligible for promotion and tenure in their institution. The lower nurse faculty salaries when compared to clinical nursing salaries were identified as a significant barrier to recruitment of faculty. As identified by the deans and directors, factors that facilitate recruiting and retention of nurse educators included the presence of supportive administrators and research agendas anchored in collaborative relationships with a local healthcare system. The study affirmed prior research regarding the complexity of the issue and the need to identify successful practices, which will provide a long-term solution to the shortage of nurse faculty. The findings of this study provided guidance for deans and directors, as they work within their institution, to acquire the resources, including administrative support, for a comprehensive plan to address this shortage.

Book excerpt: The nursing faculty shortage is well documented. Higher education administrators turn away qualified student applicants because of the lack of qualified nursing faculty. Furthermore, they find recruitment and retention of qualified nursing faculty a challenge. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of the nursing faculty role, causes of the faculty shortage, and solutions to the shortage as perceived by: (1) nurses currently in a faculty role and (2) nurses with a master's degree who were not employed in a full-time faculty position. A qualitative study using the phenomenological method was undertaken. Two groups of nurses were interviewed. The faculty group was eight nurses teaching full-time selected from faculty teaching in schools of nursing in West Virginia. The service group was eight nurses with masters' degrees in nursing but not in a faculty position selected from nurses licensed in West Virginia. In interviews, participants were asked to describe their current position, perceptions of the nursing faculty role, causes of the shortage, and solutions to the shortage. Participants believed the causes of the shortage included low salaries, lack of nurses with advanced degrees, nurses without training in teaching, and other career options. Their solutions included presenting a positive image of the nursing faculty role, supporting doctoral education, utilizing nurses with masters' degrees, mentoring new faculty, and networking with nurses in service positions. Those in both groups described a passion for nursing and teaching and viewed themselves as educators. The positive aspects of the faculty role were relationships with the students, watching students develop into nurses, relationships with colleagues, and flexible schedules. Nursing administrators will continue to be challenged with recruiting and retaining qualified nursing faculty. This study found that nurses in both faculty and service settings enjoyed teaching but they selected their positions based on cost-benefit analyses. In other words, for these participants, the costs of pursuing faculty positions are unduly high considering the perceived benefits. Book excerpt: National predictions forecast a significant shortage of registered nurses by 2020, with one of the major causes of the shortage being a lack of qualified nurse educators. Predictions for the state of Ohio mirror the national picture; however, there is little research about nursing faculty in the state, or their intentions related to their academic role. This dissertation analyzed what factors, if any, predict intent to leave academe within five years. Participants included 426 full-time nursing faculty from 60 public and private, not-for-profit nursing programs in Ohio, including both pre-licensure and advanced degree programs. A web-based survey was used to obtain faculty data. Blocked stepwise regression analysis revealed four significant predictors of intent to leave academe within five years - age, years ago highest nursing and non-nursing degree were earned, and overall satisfaction. The results of the research can be used to guide the development of strategies to retain nursing faculty in academe in the state of Ohio. Future research should be encouraged to explore the underlying issue related to the faculty shortage and its implications for the nursing shortage.
