Book excerpt: "Nurse suicide is not a new phenomenon but a subject lacking current literature review and research efforts. The last literature review or research publication occurred greater than 15 years ago, and the data available for evaluation was predominately outside the United States. These reviews and research did indicate a higher prevalence of suicide among nurses when compared to the general public. Although it is difficult to say if the current nurse suicide prevalence is increasing or decreasing, the data does support the need for additional research. The interpersonal theory of suicide is utilized to explain that an increased incidence of trauma may be one contributing factor to the higher rates of nurse suicide. This post-traumatic theory is compounded by nursing shortages, hostile work environments, stigmatization associated with mental illness, charting redundancies, and lack of overall leadership support. Substance use (nicotine, caffeine, alcohol), occupational stress, and the nurse’s mental pain were identified as contributing factors to nurse suicide. The stigma associated with mental illness was found to be a robust barrier to seeking treatment. Negative attitudes and behaviors contributed significantly to the stigmatization of those who have a mental illness. Many licensing boards and healthcare organizations have policies to protect patients and often label a nurse who seeks mental treatment as impaired, thus discouraging nurses from seeking treatment. Additionally, these actions taken by nursing boards and healthcare organizations reduce, if not eliminate, healthy avenues for nurses to seek support. Healthcare accreditors, administrators, and leaders are in a position of authority to influence the changes needed to promote nurses’ mental well-being. Establishing a healthy work environment would not only encourage the health of nurses but also improve their autonomy and productivity, thereby improving patient care quality as well. Mandating and incentivizing education programs to reduce stigma would positively influence the healthcare environment and reduce nurse suicide rates. Education done by personal testimonies has demonstrated positive impacts on stigma within healthcare settings. Creating a formal standardized nurse suicide reporting method would provide information to assist agencies in aligning efforts to reduce nurse suicide as well. Research is needed to revalidate the outdated data, in addition to advancing the current knowledge of and factors leading to nurse suicide."--Abstract.
