Book excerpt: The main objective of this report is to outline the demographic and social characteristics of the Inuit population who participated in the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey. Socio-demographic factors are of major significance in determining a population's health. These factors may be interpreted as risk or protective factors in relation to various diseases and should be taken into consideration in planning health services. This theme paper begins by presenting a description of the survey sample and goes on to consider the Inuit's mode of living, including factors such as household composition, adoption and marital status. It then addresses topics related to economic status: education, individual income, occupation and job status. In addition, the subject of personal perceptions of one's own health status is also included in the last section of the paper.
