Book Synopsis Theory and Computation of Hydrodynamic Stability by : W. O. Criminale
Download or read book Theory and Computation of Hydrodynamic Stability written by W. O. Criminale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-23 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of hydrodynamic stability is fundamental to many subjects, ranging from geophysics and meteorology through to engineering design. This treatise covers both classical and modern aspects of the subject, systematically developing it from the simplest physical problems, then progressing chapter by chapter to the most complex, considering linear and nonlinear situations, and analysing temporal and spatial stability. The authors examine each problem both analytically and numerically: many chapters end with an appendix outlining relevant numerical techniques. All relevant fluid flows are treated, including those where the fluid may be compressible, or those from geophysics, or those that require salient geometries for description. Details of initial-value problems are explored equally with those of stability. As a result, the early transient period as well as the asymptotic fate for perturbations for a flow can be assessed. The text is enriched with many exercises, copious illustrations and an extensive bibliography and the result is a book that can be used with courses on hydrodynamic stability or as an authoritative reference for researchers.

Book Synopsis Elements of Computational Fluid Dynamics by : John D. Ramshaw
Download or read book Elements of Computational Fluid Dynamics written by John D. Ramshaw and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It is addressed to beginners, and presents the ABC's or bare essentials of CFD in their simplest and most transparent form. The approach taken is to describe the principal analytical tools required, including truncation-error and stability analyses, followed by the basic elements or building blocks of CFD, which are numerical methods for treating sources, diffusion, convection, and pressure waves. Finally, it is shown how those ingredients may be combined to obtain self-contained numerical methods for solving the full equations of fluid dynamics. The book should be suitable for self-study, as a textbook for CFD short courses, and as a supplement to more comprehensive CFD and fluid dynamics texts.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Numerical Analysis of Incompressible Viscous Flows by : William Layton
Download or read book Introduction to the Numerical Analysis of Incompressible Viscous Flows written by William Layton and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Numerical Analysis of Incompressible Viscous Flows treats the numerical analysis of finite element computational fluid dynamics. Assuming minimal background, the text covers finite element methods; the derivation, behavior, analysis, and numerical analysis of Navier-Stokes equations; and turbulence and turbulence models used in simulations. Each chapter on theory is followed by a numerical analysis chapter that expands on the theory. This book provides the foundation for understanding the interconnection of the physics, mathematics, and numerics of the incompressible case, which is essential for progressing to the more complex flows not addressed in this book (e.g., viscoelasticity, plasmas, compressible flows, coating flows, flows of mixtures of fluids, and bubbly flows). With mathematical rigor and physical clarity, the book progresses from the mathematical preliminaries of energy and stress to finite element computational fluid dynamics in a format manageable in one semester. Audience: this unified treatment of fluid mechanics, analysis, and numerical analysis is intended for graduate students in mathematics, engineering, physics, and the sciences who are interested in understanding the foundations of methods commonly used for flow simulations.
Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of Non-Newtonian Flow by : M.J. Crochet
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Non-Newtonian Flow written by M.J. Crochet and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Simulation of Non-Newtonian Flow focuses on the numerical simulation of non-Newtonian flow using finite difference and finite element techniques. Topics range from the basic equations governing non-Newtonian fluid mechanics to flow classification and finite element calculation of flow (generalized Newtonian flow and viscoelastic flow). An overview of finite difference and finite element methods is also presented. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to non-Newtonian mechanics, paying particular attention to the rheometrical properties of non-Newtonian fluids as well as non-Newtonian flow in complex geometries. The role of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics is also considered. The discussion then turns to the basic equations governing non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, including Navier Stokes equations and rheological equations of state. The next chapter describes a flow classification in which the various flow problems are grouped under five main headings: flows dominated by shear viscosity, slow flows (slightly elastic liquids), small deformation flows, nearly-viscometric flows, and long-range memory effects in complex flows. The remainder of the book is devoted to numerical analysis of non-Newtonian fluids using finite difference and finite element techniques. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners of physics and mathematics.

Book Synopsis Numerical Analysis of Compressible Fluid Flows by : Eduard Feireisl
Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Compressible Fluid Flows written by Eduard Feireisl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the numerical analysis of compressible fluids in the spirit of the celebrated Lax equivalence theorem. The text is aimed at graduate students in mathematics and fluid dynamics, researchers in applied mathematics, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and engineers and physicists. The book contains original theoretical material based on a new approach to generalized solutions (dissipative or measure-valued solutions). The concept of a weak-strong uniqueness principle in the class of generalized solutions is used to prove the convergence of various numerical methods. The problem of oscillatory solutions is solved by an original adaptation of the method of K-convergence. An effective method of computing the Young measures is presented. Theoretical results are illustrated by a series of numerical experiments. Applications of these concepts are to be expected in other problems of fluid mechanics and related fields.

Book Synopsis Instabilities and Turbulence in Engineering Flows by : D. Ashpis
Download or read book Instabilities and Turbulence in Engineering Flows written by D. Ashpis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains contributions by colleagues, former students and friends of Professor Eli Reshotko in celebration of his 60th birth day. Since Professor Reshotko's scientific and engineering contribu tions have been in the areas of hydrodynamic stability, transition to turbulence, and boundary layer flows, it is only appropriate that the articles in this volume be devoted to these and related topics. The first two sections focus on instabilities and transition in sub sonic and supersonic flows, respectively. The third section deals with developing turbulence, while the the final section treats related prob lems in engineering fluid mechanics. The diversity and scope of the articles contained herein exemplify the insight and expertise required in the study of transitional and turbulent flows today - traits which also exemplify Eli Reshotko's contributions to these fields. A few of the articles in this volume were presented at a sym posium in honor of Eli Reshotko's 60th birthday, held in Newport News, Virginia, on July 28, 1991. The symposium was sponsored by lCASE, and organized by M.Y. Hussaini (lCASE) and R. Hirsh (U.S. National Science Foundation). Of those who could not attend, many chose to honor Professor Reshotko by a contribution to the volume dedicated to him. We would like to use this opportunity to express our deep ap preciation to M.Y. Hussaini for initiating this very special tribute to Eli, and to Ms. Emily Todd for her efforts in the volume preparation and in the organization of the symposium.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Compressible Viscous Fluids by : Eduard Feireisl
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Compressible Viscous Fluids written by Eduard Feireisl and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an essential introduction to the mathematical theory of compressible viscous fluids. The main goal is to present analytical methods from the perspective of their numerical applications. Accordingly, we introduce the principal theoretical tools needed to handle well-posedness of the underlying Navier-Stokes system, study the problems of sequential stability, and, lastly, construct solutions by means of an implicit numerical scheme. Offering a unique contribution – by exploring in detail the “synergy” of analytical and numerical methods – the book offers a valuable resource for graduate students in mathematics and researchers working in mathematical fluid mechanics. Mathematical fluid mechanics concerns problems that are closely connected to real-world applications and is also an important part of the theory of partial differential equations and numerical analysis in general. This book highlights the fact that numerical and mathematical analysis are not two separate fields of mathematics. It will help graduate students and researchers to not only better understand problems in mathematical compressible fluid mechanics but also to learn something from the field of mathematical and numerical analysis and to see the connections between the two worlds. Potential readers should possess a good command of the basic tools of functional analysis and partial differential equations including the function spaces of Sobolev type.
