The first of these biennial international symposia was held at the Pennsylvania State Uni versity, USA, in 1977; subsequent symposia have been held at Imperial College, London, England; the University of California, Davis, USA; the University of Karlsruhe, Ger many; Cornell University, Ithaca, USA; the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France; and Stanford University, California, USA. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new developments in the field of turbulence, especially as related to shear flows of importance in engineering and geo physics. From the 330 extended abstracts submitted for this symposium, 145 papers were presented orally and 60 as posters. Out of these, we have selected twenty-four papers for inclusion in this volume, each of which has been revised and extended in accordance with the editors' recommendations. The following four theme areas were selected after consideration of the quality of the contributions, the importance of the area, and the selection made in earlier volumes: - wall flows, - separated flows, - compressibility effects, - buoyancy, rotation, and curvature effects. As in the past, each section corresponding to the above areas begins with an introduction by an authority in the field that places the individual contributions in context with one another and with related research.

Book excerpt: We use direct numerical simulations to analyze the evolution of a temporally growing two-dimensional free shear layer seeded with a dilute suspension of bubbles under gravity. The bubble concentrations are dilute enough so that bubble interactions are negligible, but cumulative effects of bubbles alter the flow field. The evolution of the bubbles can then be determined by tracking many individual bubbles, and the flow field is advanced using the Navier-Stokes equations with a coupling term in the momentum equation representing the effect of the bubbles on the flow. We interpret the results in terms of the difference in the vorticity, bubble concentration, and pressure fields relative to the passive or one way coupled case. Due to the nature of the vorticity production mechanism, the net circulation is not affected by the bubbles, but local variations do occur, especially near the vortex center. In addition to the effect of the bubbles on the flow, the bubble field is also altered as a result of the two-way coupling. The location of bubble accumulation is shifted away from the vortex center and the magnitude of this accumulation is reduced relative to the passive case.

Thus, while turbulence model development in general has proceeded very slowly in the past twenty years, progress for free shear flows has been even more so. This paper highlights some of the fundamental issues in modeling free shear flows for propulsion applications, presents a review of past modeling efforts, and identifies areas where further research is needed. Among the topics discussed are differences between planar and axisymmetric flows, development versus self-similar regions, the effect of compressibility and the evolution of compressibility corrections, the effect of temperature on jets, and the significance of turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers for reacting shear flows. Large eddy simulation greatly reduces the amount of empiricism in the physical modeling, but is sensitive to a number of numerical issues.
