Book excerpt: With the advent of super computers during the last ten years, the numerical simulation of viscous fluid flows modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations is becoming a most useful tool in Aircraft and Engine Design. In fact, compressible Navier-Stokes solvers tend to constitute the basic tools for many industrial applications occuring in the simulation of very complex turbulent and combustion phenomena. In Aerospace Engineering, as an exemple, their mathematical modelization requires reliable and robust methods for solving very stiff non linear partial differential equations. For the above reasons, it was clear that a workshop on this topic would be of interest for the CFD community in order to compare accuracy and efficiency of Navier-Stokes solvers on selected external and internal flow problems using different numerical approaches. The workshop was held on 4-6 December 1985 at Nice, France and organized by INRIA with the sponsorship of the GAMM Committee on Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics.

Book excerpt: A numerical solution of the compressible boundary layer equations was developed for flows over either two-dimensional or axisymmetric surfaces. The solution method is capable of solving for boundary layer parameters in either laminar or turbulent flows. In the case of turbulent flow, closure is achieved by use of a two-layered eddy viscosity model. The boundary layer equations are solved by a numerical marching procedure. A Mangler-Levy-Lees transformation of independent variables is used to improve the efficiency of the numerical solution. The transformed boundary layer equations are then linearized by a three point finite difference scheme. The linearized equations are solved by a matrix solution technique. Comparisons of computed boundary layer parameters with experimentally determined parameters were made for both laminar and turbulent flows over axisymmetric bodies. The comparisons show the numerical solution to be very accurate. (Author).

Book excerpt: A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing this book, we decided to emphasize applications and to provide methods for solving problems. As a result, we limited the mathematical devel opments and we tried as far as possible to get insight into the behavior of numerical methods by considering simple mathematical models. The text contains three sections. The first is intended to give the fundamen tals of most types of numerical approaches employed to solve fluid-mechanics problems. The topics of finite differences, finite elements, and spectral meth ods are included, as well as a number of special techniques. The second section is devoted to the solution of incompressible flows by the various numerical approaches. We have included solutions of laminar and turbulent-flow prob lems using finite difference, finite element, and spectral methods. The third section of the book is concerned with compressible flows. We divided this last section into inviscid and viscous flows and attempted to outline the methods for each area and give examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outgrowth of a von Kannan Institute Lecture Series by the same title first presented in 1985 and repeated with modifications in succeeding years. The objective, then and now, was to present the subject of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to an audience unfamiliar with all but the most basic aspects of numerical techniques and to do so in such a way that the practical application ofCFD would become clear to everyone. Remarks from hundreds of persons who followed this course encouraged the editor and the authors to improve the content and organization year by year and eventually to produce the present volume. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, John Anderson lays out the subject by first describing the governing equations offluid dynamics, concentration on their mathematical properties which contain the keys to the choice of the numerical approach. Methods of discretizing the equations are discussed next and then transformation techniques and grids are also discussed. This section closes with two examples of numerical methods which can be understood easily by all concerned: source and vortex panel methods and the explicit method. The second part of the book is devoted to four self-contained chapters on more advanced material: Roger Grundmann treats the boundary layer equations and methods of solution; Gerard Degrez treats implicit time-marching methods for inviscid and viscous compressible flows, and Eric Dick treats, in two separate articles, both finite-volume and finite-element methods.

Book excerpt: The purpose and organisation of this book are described in the preface to the first edition (1988). In preparing this edition minor changes have been made, par ticularly to Chap. 1 (Vol. 1) to keep it reasonably current, and to upgrade the treatment of specific techniques, particularly in Chaps. 12-14 and 16-18. How ever, the rest of the book (Vols. 1 and 2) has required only minor modification to clarify the presentation and to modify or replace individual problems to make them more effective. The answers to the problems are available in Solutions Manual jor Computational Techniques jor Fluid Dynamics by K. Srinivas and C. A. J. Fletcher, published by Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 1991. The computer programs have also been reviewed and tidied up. These are available on an IBM compatible floppy disc direct from the author. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many readers for their usually generous comments about the first edition and particularly those readers who went to the trouble of drawing specific errors to my attention. In this revised edi tion considerable effort has been made to remove a number of minor errors that had found their way into the original. I express the hope that no errors remain but welcome communication that will help me improve future editions. In preparing this revised edition I have received considerable help from Dr. K.

Book excerpt: The Boundary Element Method has now become a powerful tool of engineering analysis and is routinely applied for the solution of elastostatics and potential problems. More recently research has concentrated on solving a large variety of non-linear and time dependent applications and in particular the method has been developed for viscous fluid flow problems. This book presents the state of the art on the solution of viscous flow using boundary elements and discusses different current approaches which have been validated by numerical experiments. . Chapter 1 of the book presents a brief review of previous work on viscous flow simulation and in particular gives an up-to-date list of the most important BEM references in the field. Chapter 2 reviews the governing equations for general viscous flow, including compressibility. The authors present a compre hensive treatment of the different cases and their formulation in terms of boundary integral equations. This work has been the result of collaboration between Computational Mechanics Institute of Southampton and Massa chusetts Institute of Technology researchers. Chapter 3 describes the gen eralized formulation for unsteady viscous flow problems developed over many years at Georgia Institute of Technology. This formulation has been extensively applied to solve aer09ynamic problems.

Book excerpt: A computer code, based on a finite element algorithm, was developed to solve the governing equations for a three-dimensional flow around a spherically blunted cone at an angle of attack. The solution is valid for a boundary layer region, including the flow separation in the cross-flow direction in the leeward area. The required initial and boundary conditions for this solution are obtained from a finite difference computer program for laminar compressible three-dimensional boundary layer flow. Extension of the analysis to include the turbulent transport using the mixing length theory and a two-equation turbulence model is described. The results demonstrate the capability of the finite element method to predict the three-dimensional boundary region flow with cross-flow separation in the leeward area and to model the effects of turbulent flow.
