Book Synopsis Soft Interfaces by : Lydéric Bocquet
Download or read book Soft Interfaces written by Lydéric Bocquet and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the distinctive and useful phenomena of soft matter come from its interaction with interfaces. Examples are the peeling of a strip of adhesive tape, the coating of a surface, the curling of a fiber via capillary forces, or the collapse of a porous sponge. These interfacial phenomena are distinct from the intrinsic behavior of a soft material like a gel or a microemulsion. Yet many forms of interfacial phenomena can be understood via common principles valid for many forms of soft matter. Our goal in organizing this school was to give students a grasp of these common principles and their many ramifications and possibilities. The Les Houches Summer School comprised over fifty 90-minute lectures over four weeks. Four four-lecture courses by Howard Stone, Michael Cates, David Nelson and L. Mahadevan served as an anchor for the program. A number of shorter courses and seminars rounded out the school. This volume collects the lecture notes of the school.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute which was held in Alghero, Sardinia, in July 1991. The development of computers in the recent years has lead to the emergence of unconventional ideas aiming at solving old problems. Among these, the possibility of computing directly fluid flows from the trajectories of constituent particles has been much exploited in the last few years: lattice gases cellular automata and more generally Molecular Dynamics have been used to reproduce and study complex flows. Whether or not these methods may someday compete with more traditional approaches is a question which cannot be answered at the present time: it will depend on the new computer architectures as well as on the possibility to develop very simple models to reproduce the most complex phenomena taking place in the approach of fully developed turbulence or plastic flows. In any event, these molecular methods are already used, and sometimes in an applied engineering context, to study strong shock waves, chemistry induced shocks or motion of dislocations in plastic flows, that is in domains where a fully continuum description appears insufficient. The main topic of our Institute was the molecular simulations of fluid flows. The project to hold this Institute was made three years ago, in the summer of 1989 during a NATO workshop in Brussels on the same subject.

Book Synopsis Characterization of Polymer Blends by : Sabu Thomas
Download or read book Characterization of Polymer Blends written by Sabu Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the gap for a reference dedicated to the characterization of polymer blends and their micro and nano morphologies, this book provides comprehensive, systematic coverage in a one-stop, two-volume resource for all those working in the field. Leading researchers from industry and academia, as well as from government and private research institutions around the world summarize recent technical advances in chapters devoted to their individual contributions. In so doing, they examine a wide range of modern characterization techniques, from microscopy and spectroscopy to diffraction, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical measurements and chromatography. These methods are compared with each other to assist in determining the best solution for both fundamental and applied problems, paying attention to the characterization of nanoscale miscibility and interfaces, both in blends involving copolymers and in immiscible blends. The thermodynamics, miscibility, phase separation, morphology and interfaces in polymer blends are also discussed in light of new insights involving the nanoscopic scale. Finally, the authors detail the processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer blends, as well as the influence of processing on the generation of micro and nano morphologies, and the dependence of these morphologies on the properties of blends. Hot topics such as compatibilization through nanoparticles, miscibility of new biopolymers and nanoscale investigations of interfaces in blends are also addressed. With its application-oriented approach, handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors, this is an outstanding survey for anyone involved in the field of polymer blends for advanced technologies.

Book Synopsis An Analysis of Phase Separation Processes for Stochastic and Nonlocal Extensions of the Classical Phase-field Model by : Tina R. Hartley
Download or read book An Analysis of Phase Separation Processes for Stochastic and Nonlocal Extensions of the Classical Phase-field Model written by Tina R. Hartley and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase separation in composite materials, or materials that are made up of two or more different components, is a process in which the material separates over time into regions of predominantly one component or the other. Because these composite materials are often developed to be used under certain conditions, significant changes of this nature in their material composition can dramatically affect their performance, thus it is important to understand the dynamic behavior of these changes. One mathematical model of phase separation is the classical phase field model, which is a system of nonlinear evolution equations that describes nonisothermal phase separation. Instead of a composite material, the phase field model describes pure materials which can assume two different phases; for example, a solid and a liquid phase. In this dissertation, I analyze the behavior of solutions of the phase field model, along with two extensions to the classical model. One extension is the addition of stochastic terms to the model, thus incorporating random behavior into the equations to address fluctuations in temperature, structural imperfections of the material, or other unknown effects. The other extension is the addition of a nonlocal operator to account for long range interactions. The behavior of all three variations of the phase field model is studied through numerical simulations, and the results compared to describe the differences between the models. In addition, I present a proof showing that the numerical method converges to the true solution of the phase field model.
