The means of analysis was a nonconforming sliding spectral element method for the unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in two-dimensional geometry. The variable parameter in the simulation was the rotor advance coefficient. A comparison of lifting forces, flow rate, dissipation and kinetic energy was conducted for the various test cases. Robustness of the numerical discretizations was demonstrated by the consistency of the computed results. The divergence, vorticity and streamlines generated during postprocessing were in strong agreement with hydrodynamic theory. A step-by-step procedure is presented for manipulating the working environment -- the discrete spectral element control volume -- around the rotor- stator pair. The selection criteria for the input parameters and boundary conditions is developed.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a numerical approach based on a potential flow method has been developed in order to simulate unsteady rotor/stator interaction, and to predict the unsteady performance of a propeller and its rudder. The method is first developed and tested in two-dimensions by using a boundary element method in which a front hydrofoil is moving downward, while a back hydrofoil is stationary. The wakes of the two hydrofoils are modeled by continuous dipole sheets and determined in time by applying a force free-condition on each wake surface. The wake/hydrofoil interaction is de-singularized by applying a numerical fence on the surface of the back hydrofoil. The viscous wake/hydrofoil interaction is considered by employing a viscous wake vorticity model on the rotor's wake surface. The present method is validated by comparison with analytical solutions, experimental data and by using the results from a commercial Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver for the same set-up and conditions. The numerical approach is further extended to three-dimensions to predict the mutual interaction between a propeller and rudder. A fully unsteady wake alignment algorithm is implemented into a Vortex Lattice Method to simulate the unsteady propeller flow. The interaction between propeller and rudder is investigated in a fully unsteady manner, where a panel method is used to solve the flow around the rudder, and a vortex lattice method is used to solve the flow around the propeller. The interaction between a propeller and its rudder is considered in an iterative manner by solving the propeller and the rudder problems separately and by including the unsteady effects of one component on the other. The effect of the unsteady propeller-rudder interaction on the mean and on the unsteady propeller/rudder performance, including sheet cavitation on the rudder, is studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady flow in a two-dimensional compressor rotor is computed by solving the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations for flow between two adjacent rotor blades. The computations are carried out on a CDC Cyber 845 computer and a CRAY XMP computer using MacCormack's explicit finite difference scheme. The primary objective of this program is to numerically simulate the rotor flow accounting for the effects of wakes from the upstream stator and inlet guide vane. Particular attention is focused on the influence of unsteady effects on the mass flow rate, shock structure, and shock wave-boundary layer interaction. Keywords: Compressor rotor, Navier Stokes equations, Numerical simulation, Unsteady flow.

Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a high-fidelity approach to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. Recent developments have shown LES to be able to predict aerodynamic noise generation and propagation as well as the turbulent flow, by means of either a hybrid or a direct approach. This book is based on the results of two French/German research groups working on LES simulations in complex geometries and noise generation in turbulent flows. The results provide insights into modern prediction approaches for turbulent flows and noise generation mechanisms as well as their use for novel noise reduction concepts.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large eddy simulation of an enclosed annular rotor stator cavity is presented. The geometry is characterized by a large aspect ratio G = (b-a)/h = 18.32 and a small radius ratio a/b = 0.152, where a and b are the inner and outer radii of the rotating disk and h is the interdisk spacing. The rotation rate [omega] under consideration is equivalent to the rotational Reynolds number Re = [omega]b2/v = 9.5x104, where v is the kinematic viscosity. The main objective of this study is to correctly simulate the rotor stator cavity using a low order numerical scheme on unstructured grids. The numerical simulations were run on the software AVBP developed by the Centre Européen de Recherche et de Formation Avancée en Calcul Scientific. The results were compared to the experimental results obtained by Sebastien Poncet of Université Aix-Marseille. Two large eddy simulations techniques were used: the Smagorinsky and Wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity models. The simulations were run on three set of grids, each with a different cell resolution-14, 35 and 50- along the thickness of the system. Results from each mesh show a good qualitative agreement of the mean velocity field with Poncet's experimental results. It was found that the Samgorinsky model to be more appropriate for this configuration.

The combination of different turbulence sources and transport mechanisms poses the question of determining adequate metrics to quantify turbulence levels and provide insight into the flow structure and its evolution. Apart from experimental measurement techniques, numerical techniques arise as a useful tool to characterize this type of flow, especially hybrid LES techniques that allow a highly accurate description of the transport of turbulent structures, while turbulence generation at solid boundaries is addressed using RANS schemes. In this chapter, recent developments concerning numerical simulation of rotor-stator and stator-rotor interactions in low-speed axial fans using LES techniques are presented. A post-processing framework is introduced to segregate the deterministic and turbulent components of the unsteady flow, allowing an accurate description of both phenomena. Hence, turbulent transport over the different stage rows of the axial fan can be accurately addressed. Following, LES capacities to simulate turbulence transport mechanisms such as breaking-up of turbulent eddies, stretching and dissipation of vorticity or identification and convection of coherent vortices are discussed. The ability of LES computations to disclose flow turbulence in rotor-stator environments at off-design conditions is specially illustrated.

The aim of the current work is to examine the behavior of fluid flow inside a rotary sliding vane pump and assessing the performance by studying the effect of change of the rotational speed, number of vanes and the radial clearance gap size between vane tips and stator surface on the performance of the pump. The commercial finite-volume solver ANSYS Fluent was used to build a 3D model of the pump and simulate the flow behavior in it with an additional C-language source code for the description of the dynamic mesh motion. Pump flow was studied using lubricating oil, 5W-30, as the working fluid. Several computational configurations were used for the numerical simulation.
