Our approach uses a form of the low Mach number equations that discretely conserves both mass and energy. The discretization methodology is based on a robust projection formulation that accommodates large density contrasts. The algorithm uses an operator-split treatment of stiff reaction terms and includes effects of differential diffusion. The basic computational approach is embedded in an adaptive projection framework that uses structured hierarchical grids with subcycling in time that preserves the discrete conservation properties of the underlying single-grid algorithm. We present numerical examples illustrating the performance of the method on both premixed and non-premixed flames.

Book excerpt: Novel sequential and parallel computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes based on method of lines (MOL) approach were developed for the numerical simulation of multi-component reacting flows using detailed transport and thermodynamic models. Both codes were applied to the prediction of a confined axisymmetric laminar co-flowing methane-air diffusion flame for which experimental data were available in the literature. Flame-sheet model for infinite-rate chemistry and one-, two-, and five- and ten-step reduced finite-rate reaction mechanisms were employed for methane-air combustion sub-model. A second-order high-resolution total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme based on Lagrange interpolation polynomial was proposed in order to alleviate spurious oscillations encountered in time evolution of flame propagation. Steady-state velocity, temperature and species profiles obtained by using infinite- and finite-rate chemistry models were validated against experimental data and other numerical solutions. They were found to be in reasonably good agreement with measurements and numerical results. The proposed difference scheme produced accurate results without spurious oscillations and numerical diffusion encountered in the classical schemes and hence was found to be a successful scheme applicable to strongly convective flow problems with non-uniform grid resolution. The code was also found to be an efficient tool for the prediction and understanding of transient combustion systems. This study constitutes the initial steps in the development of an efficient numerical scheme for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of unsteady, turbulent, multi-dimensional combustion with complex chemistry.

Chapters are organized in six groups covering from fundamentals to relevant applications. The book covers particle-based methods and also discusses Eulerian-Eulerian and Eulerian-Lagrangian techniques based on finite-volume schemes. Moreover, the possibility of modeling the poly-dispersity of the secondary phases in Eulerian-Eulerian schemes by solving the population balance equation is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling and Simulation of Reactive Flows presents information on modeling and how to numerically solve reactive flows. The book offers a distinctive approach that combines diffusion flames and geochemical flow problems, providing users with a comprehensive resource that bridges the gap for scientists, engineers, and the industry. Specifically, the book looks at the basic concepts related to reaction rates, chemical kinetics, and the development of reduced kinetic mechanisms. It considers the most common methods used in practical situations, along with equations for reactive flows, and various techniques—including flamelet, ILDM, and Redim—for jet flames and plumes, with solutions for both. In addition, the book includes techniques to accelerate the convergence of numerical simulation, and a discussion on the analysis of uncertainties with numerical results, making this a useful reference for anyone who is interested in both combustion in free flow and in porous media. Helps readers learn how to apply applications of numerical methods to simulate geochemical kinetics Presents methods on how to transform the transport equations in several coordinate systems Includes discussions of the basic concepts related to reaction rates, chemical kinetics, and the development of reduced kinetic mechanisms, including the most common methods used in practical situations Offers a distinctive approach that combines diffusion flames and geochemical flow problems

Book excerpt: This volume contains eighteen reports on work, which is conducted since 2000 in the Collaborative Research Programme 'Numerical Flow Simulation' of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). French and German engineers and mathematicians present their joint research on the topics 'Development of Solution Techniques', 'Crystal Growth and Melts', 'Flows of Reacting Gases, Sound Generation' and 'Turbulent Flows'. In the background of their work is the still strong growth of the performance of super-computer architectures, which, together with large advances in algorithms, is opening vast new application areas of numerical flow simulation in research and industrial work. Results of this programme from the period 1996 to 1998 have been presented in NNFM 66 (1998), and NNFM75 (2001).

The main subjects are physical-chemical processes sharing the difficulty of interacting diffusion, transport and reaction which cannot be considered separately. Book excerpt: This book presents methodologies for analysing large data sets produced by the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulence and combustion. It describes the development of models that can be used to analyse large eddy simulations, and highlights both the most common techniques and newly emerging ones. The chapters, written by internationally respected experts, invite readers to consider DNS of turbulence and combustion from a formal, data-driven standpoint, rather than one led by experience and intuition. This perspective allows readers to recognise the shortcomings of existing models, with the ultimate goal of quantifying and reducing model-based uncertainty. In addition, recent advances in machine learning and statistical inferences offer new insights on the interpretation of DNS data. The book will especially benefit graduate-level students and researchers in mechanical and aerospace engineering, e.g. those with an interest in general fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, and the environmental and atmospheric sciences.
