Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores both the theoretical foundation of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and its applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Readers will discover a thorough explanation of the FVM numerics and algorithms used for the simulation of incompressible and compressible fluid flows, along with a detailed examination of the components needed for the development of a collocated unstructured pressure-based CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a three-dimensional unstructured pressure-based finite volume academic CFD code, implemented within Matlab. The second is OpenFOAM®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for the simulation of industrial scale flow problems. With over 220 figures, numerous examples and more than one hundred exercise on FVM numerics, programming, and applications, this textbook is suitable for use in an introductory course on the FVM, in an advanced course on numerics, and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.

Book excerpt: In its third revised and extended edition the book offers an overview of the techniques used to solve problems in fluid mechanics on computers. The authors describe in detail the most often used techniques. Included are advanced techniques in computational fluid dynamics, such as direct and large-eddy simulation of turbulence. Moreover, a new section deals with grid quality and an extended description of discretization methods has also been included. Common roots and basic principles for many apparently different methods are explained. The book also contains a great deal of practical advice for code developers and users.

They can occur during the various stages of well-drilling, repair operations or transportation. The spreading of oil occurs due to the pollutant's tendency to flow over itself. Knowledge of its physical properties during the phenomenon, such as velocities and spatial positions, allows the timely adoption of environmental protection measures. This book presents, in a simple and objective way, the development and implementation of purely Lagrangian numerical modelling using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method for the study of the spreading of oil in its first stage (gravity-inertial regime) on a calm sea. The computational code's implementation and validation were carried out through the simulation of classical problems in the scientific literature, i.e., heat diffusion in a homogeneous flat plate, a still volume of water inside an immobile reservoir and a dam failure. From the coupling of the software with a collision detection and response algorithm, numerical results in concordance with the curve adjusted by James Fay (a pioneering scientist in the study of oil spills) for the prediction of oil slick diameters at the end of the gravity-inertial regime were achieved.

It includes practical applications for the numerical simulation of flow and transport in rivers and estuaries, the dam-break problem and overland flow. Closure models for turbulence, such as Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes and Large Eddy Simulation are presented, coupling the aforementioned surface tracking techniques with environmental fluid dynamics. While many computer programs can solve the partial differential equations describing the dynamics of fluids, many are not capable of including free surfaces in their simulations. Provides numerical solutions of the turbulent Navier-Stokes equations in three space dimensions Includes closure models for turbulence, such as Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes, and Large Eddy Simulation Practical applications are presented for the numerical simulation of flow and transport in rivers and estuaries, the dam-break problem and overland flow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 250 years partial di?erential equations have been clearly the most important tool available to mankind in order to understand a large variety of phenomena, natural at ?rst and then those originating from - man activity and technological development. Mechanics, physics and their engineering applications were the ?rst to bene?t from the impact of partial di?erential equations on modeling and design, but a little less than a century ago the Schr ̈ odinger equation was the key opening the door to the application of partial di?erential equations to quantum chemistry, for small atomic and molecular systems at ?rst, but then for systems of fast growing complexity. The place of partial di?erential equations in mathematics is a very particular one: initially, the partial di?erential equations modeling natural phenomena were derived by combining calculus with physical reasoning in order to - press conservation laws and principles in partial di?erential equation form, leading to the wave equation, the heat equation, the equations of elasticity, the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations for ?uids, the Maxwell equations of electro-magnetics, etc. It is in order to solve ‘constructively’ the heat equation that Fourier developed the series bearing his name in the early 19th century; Fourier series (and later integrals) have played (and still play) a fundamental roleinbothpureandappliedmathematics, includingmanyareasquiteremote from partial di?erential equations. On the other hand, several areas of mathematics such as di?erential ge- etry have bene?ted from their interactions with partial di?erential equations.

Book excerpt: The selected papers contained in this book present the latest research in one of the most challenging, yet most universally applicable areas of technology. Multiphase flows are found in all areas of technology and the range of related problems of interest is vast, including many areas of science and engineering. Recently multiphase fluid dynamics have generated a great deal of attention, leading to many notable advances in experimental, analytical and numerical studies. It is perhaps, however, work on numerical solutions which is the most noticeable owing to the continuing improvements in computer software tools. Progress in numerical methods has permitted the solution of many practical problems, helping to improve our understanding of the physics involved. The presented papers illustrate the close interaction between numerical modellers and researchers working to gradually resolve the many outstanding issues in our understanding of multiphase flow.

This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.
