Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a series of numerical experiments dealing with rotor/stator interactions in hydroturbines. The means of analysis was a nonconforming sliding spectral element method for the unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in two-dimensional geometry. The variable parameter in the simulation was the rotor advance coefficient. A comparison of lifting forces, flow rate, dissipation and kinetic energy was conducted for the various test cases. Robustness of the numerical discretizations was demonstrated by the consistency of the computed results. The divergence, vorticity and streamlines generated during postprocessing were in strong agreement with hydrodynamic theory. A step-by-step procedure is presented for manipulating the working environment -- the discrete spectral element control volume -- around the rotor- stator pair. The selection criteria for the input parameters and boundary conditions is developed.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis Passage-Averaged Description of Wave Rotor Flow by : Gerard E. Welch
Download or read book Passage-Averaged Description of Wave Rotor Flow written by Gerard E. Welch and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unsteady flow within wave rotor passages is influenced by the rotor blade, hub, and tip shroud surface profiles. By averaging from hub to shroud and from blade to blade, a reduced set of the governing equations is obtained that is appropriate for design studies and parametric analyses. The application of these equations requires closure models for force integrals and for correlation terms that arise when the density averages of products of the flow field variables are expanded in terms of products of the density-averaged variables. The force integrals and the correlation terms depend on the instantaneous pitchwise and spanwise flow field distributions established by unsteadiness relative to the rotor, flow turning induced by blade, hub, and tip-shroud profiling, and rotation. Two approaches to model the force integrals are described. The influence of relative unsteadiness and flow turning on the correlation terms is discussed by considering the propagation of gas dynamic waves in rotor passages defined by uncambered, staggered blades and by unstaggered, cambered blades.
Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of a Closed Rotor-stator System Using Large Eddy Simulation by : Solal Abraham Teva Amouyal
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of a Closed Rotor-stator System Using Large Eddy Simulation written by Solal Abraham Teva Amouyal and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large eddy simulation of an enclosed annular rotor stator cavity is presented. The geometry is characterized by a large aspect ratio G = (b-a)/h = 18.32 and a small radius ratio a/b = 0.152, where a and b are the inner and outer radii of the rotating disk and h is the interdisk spacing. The rotation rate [omega] under consideration is equivalent to the rotational Reynolds number Re = [omega]b2/v = 9.5x104, where v is the kinematic viscosity. The main objective of this study is to correctly simulate the rotor stator cavity using a low order numerical scheme on unstructured grids. The numerical simulations were run on the software AVBP developed by the Centre Européen de Recherche et de Formation Avancée en Calcul Scientific. The results were compared to the experimental results obtained by Sebastien Poncet of Université Aix-Marseille. Two large eddy simulations techniques were used: the Smagorinsky and Wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity models. The simulations were run on three set of grids, each with a different cell resolution-14, 35 and 50- along the thickness of the system. Results from each mesh show a good qualitative agreement of the mean velocity field with Poncet's experimental results. It was found that the Samgorinsky model to be more appropriate for this configuration.

Book Synopsis A Numerical and Experimental Investigation for the Modification and Design of a Gerolor Using Low Viscosity Fluids by : Frank Horvat
Download or read book A Numerical and Experimental Investigation for the Modification and Design of a Gerolor Using Low Viscosity Fluids written by Frank Horvat and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gerolor or Gerotor is a positive displacement device which typically functions as either a pump or a motor. This variation in energy input depends on whether the working fluid is driving or being driven by a set of meshing internal gears connected to an input/output shaft. This work proposes a method for the design and performance analysis of a Gerolor pump using low variable viscosity (2-8 cP) oil. The design methodology will detail the modification and redesign of internal rotor/stator components for a commercially available Gerolor. These proposed modifications are limited to (i) rotor profile design and (ii) enhancement of the fluid film layer for seven circumferentially spaced rollers. The two operational parameters used for the experimental work are (i) oil viscosity and (ii) pump flow rate. The experimental work utilizes a test loop specifically designed for the use of multiple original and modified Gerolor test heads. This test loop will function as a means to compare any of the proposed modifications and allow insight into the internal components functionality. One of the studied test heads was remanufactured out of acrylic and used for qualitative purposes to determine component function and to visualize flow paths internally and identify leakage sources and paths. A transient analysis was performed numerically using a commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package ANSYS CFX, which couples both a fluid solid interaction (FSI) with the full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible and constant property, Newtonian fluid. The purpose of this numerical simulation is to model and validate the leakage paths identified experimentally and to model the transient orbit of the inner rotor with respect to the stationary stator. The geometry for this simulation will use one of the experimental pumps where the internal rotor profiles will be created using an in-house developed GerolorGeometryGen (G3) code. The numeric results to be presented will contain both transient velocity and pressure development within the Gerolor.
