Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ensemble of six major chapters, an introduction, and a closure on modeling transport phenomena in porous media with applications. Two of the six chapters explain the underlying theories, whereas the rest focus on new applications. Porous media transport is essentially a multi-scale process. Accordingly, the related theory described in the second and third chapters covers both continuum‐ and meso‐scale phenomena. Examining the continuum formulation imparts rigor to the empirical porous media models, while the mesoscopic model focuses on the physical processes within the pores. Porous media models are discussed in the context of a few important engineering applications. These include biomedical problems, gas hydrate reservoirs, regenerators, and fuel cells. The discussion reveals the strengths and weaknesses of existing models as well as future research directions.

Book excerpt: The first Symposium on Recent Advances in Problems of Flow and Transport in Porous Media was held in Marrakech in June '96 and has provided a focus for the utilization of computer methods for solving the many complex problems encountered in the field of solute transport in porous media. This symposium has been successful in bringing together scientists, physicists, hydrogeologists, researchers in soil and fluid mechanics and engineers involved in this multidisciplinary subject. It is clear that the utilization of computer-based models in this domain is still rapidly expanding and that new and novel solutions are being developed. The contributed papers which form this book reflect the recent advances, in particular with respect to new methods, inverse problems, reactive transport, unsaturated media and upscaling. These have been subdivided into the following sections: I. Numerical methods II. Mass transport and heat transfer III. Comparison with experimentation and simulation of real cases This book contains reviewed articles of the top presentations held during the International Symposium on Computer Methods in Porous Media Engineering which took place in Giens (France) in October 1998. All of the presentations and the optimism shown during the meeting provided further evidence that computer modeling is making remarkable progress and is indeed becoming an essential toolkit in the field of porous media and solute transport. I believe that the content of this book provides evidence of this and furthermore gives a comprehensive review of the theoretical developments and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of miscible ow in porous media is an important topic in many disciplines of science and engineering, especially in the field of petroleum engineering. For example, Carbon dioxide (CO2) may be injected into an oil reservoir in order to improve the oil recovery rates, which is called enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This thesis focuses on the study of a miscible displacement of two fluids, such as CO2 and oil, in a porous medium. An upscaling methodology for modeling multiscale features of the ow and the porous medium has been studied, where the overall pressure drag and skin friction exerted on the porous medium has been modelled by combining the Darcy's law with a statistical mechanical theory of viscosity, which is an important contribution of this thesis. A numerical methodology for capturing the multiphysics and multiscale nature of the governing motion has been studied. The temporal discretization employs the second order Crank-Nicolson scheme for viscous and diffusive phenomena, and an explicit method for all other terms. The nonlinear advection terms in the momentum equation has been treated with an Euler explicit flux form central finite difference method; however, the advection of the CO2 mass flux has been treated with a streamline based Lagrangian method. In order to implement the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) scheme for resolving the incompressibility, a staggered arrangement of the velocity and pressure has been presented on a collocated grid. This approach enhances the implementation of a multigrid solver, and is a novel computational model for simulating miscible displacement processes. The performance of the Lagrangian method has been assessed with respect to an equivalent flux form upwind method. The results indicate that the viscous forces play a signicant role compared to the effect of permeability on miscible displacement of CO2 and oil, where the injected CO2 displaces the residual oil without being distorted, thereby enhancing the recovery of hydrocarbon. Although the present results with an idealized model lacks from verifications with field measurements, findings of this thesis provide useful feedback to further investigations on CO2 based EOR techniques.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, University of Ibadan (Department of Mechanical Engineering), language: English, abstract: The study of porous beds has attracted a wide range of attention in recent years. One issue that has remained standing is that of accurate modelling of the behaviour of pressure drop. This project therefore attempts to add to the existing knowledge in the area by performing a simple numerical simulation of pressure in flow over fixed porous beds. In performing this simulation, the model was governed by two fluid flow principles, the conservation of mass and conservation of momentum using the Brinkman Equations. COMSOL Multiphysics was employed in helping to solve this model because it uses a discretization of finite elements in solving a set of partial differential equations that help to promote accuracy of results. The model involved a rectangular porous bed measuring (25 m x 2 m) for porosity values of 0.2-0.9 at intervals of 0.1 and air and water were used as working fluids. From the simulation performed, the velocity of the porous bed increases for all porosity values by 8.25%. For the range of porosity values between 0.2 and 0.9, the maximum pressure at the inlet of the porous bed was1134.42 Pa. for water and 20.38 Pa for air which occurred at a velocity of 4x10 DEGREES-5 m/s and the minimum pressure at the outlet of the porous bed was 0.045 Pa forwater and 8.16x10 DEGREES-4 Pa for air which occurred at a velocity of 4x10 DEGREES-8 m/s. It can be concluded that a safe range of porosity values in minimizing pressure drop can be found at higher porosity values. This is useful in the design of industrial equipment such as packed bed reactors as

Book excerpt: Porous media, and especially phenomena of transport in such materials, are an impor1ant field of interest for geologists, hydrogeologists, researchers in soil and fluid mechanics, petroleum and chemical engineers, physicists and scientists in many other disciplines. The development of better numerical simulation techniques in combination with the enormous expansion of computer tools, have enabled numerical simulation of transport phenomena (mass of phases and components, energy etc. ) in porous domains of interest. Before any practical application of the results of such simulations can be used, it is essential that the simulation models have been proven to be valid. In order to establish the greatest possible coherence between the models and the physical reality, frequent interaction between numericians, mathematicians and the previously quoted researchers, is necessary. Once this coherence is established, the numerical simulations could be used to predict various phenomena such as water management, propagation of pollutants etc. These simulations could be, in many cases, the only financially acceptable tool to carry out an investigation. Current studies within various fields of applications include not only physical comprehension aspects of flow and energy or solute transport in saturated or unsaturated media but also numerical aspects in deriving strong complex equations. Among the various fields of applications generally two types of problems can be observed. Those associated with the pollution of the environment and those linked to water management. The former are essentially a problem in industrialized countries, the latter are a major source of concern in North-Africa.
