Book excerpt: This dissertation deals with the numerical investigation of the physics of sprays autoigniting at diesel engine conditions using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), and with the modelling of droplet related effects within the Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) method for turbulent non-premixed combustion. The dissertation can be split in four different sections, with the content of each being summarized below. The first part of the dissertation introduces the equations that govern the temporal and spatial evolution of a turbulent reacting flow, and provides an extensive review of the CMC method for both single and two-phase flows. The problem of modelling droplet related effects in the CMC transport equations is discussed in detail, and physically-sound models for the unclosed terms that appear in these equations and that are affected by the droplet presence are derived. The second part of the dissertation deals with the application of the CMC method to the numerical simulation of several n-heptane sprays igniting at conditions relevant to diesel engine combustion. Droplet-related terms in the CMC equations were closed with the models developed in the first part of the dissertation. For all conditions investigated, CMC could correctly capture the ignition, propagation and anchoring phases of the spray flame. Inclusion of droplet terms in the CMC equations had little influence on the numerical predictions, in line with the findings of other authors. The third part of the dissertation presents a DNS study on the autoignition of n-heptane sprays at high pressure / low temperature conditions. The analysis revealed that spray ignition occurs first in well-mixed locations with a specific value of the mixture fraction. Changes in the operating conditions (initial turbulence intensity of the background gas, global equivalence ratio in the spray region, initial droplet size distribution) affected spray ignition through changes in the mixture formation process. For each spray, a characteristic ignition delay time and a characteristic droplet evaporation time could be defined. The ratio between these time scales was suggested as a key parameter for controlling the ignition delay of the spray. The last part of the dissertation exploits the DNS simulations to perform an a priori analysis of the applicability of the CMC method to autoigniting sprays. The study revealed that standard models for the mixing quantities used in CMC provide poor approximations in two-phase flows, and are partially responsible for the poor prediction of the ignition delay time. It was also observed that first-order closure of the chemical source terms performs poorly during the onset of ignition, suggesting that second-order closures may be more appropriate for studying spray autoignition problems. The contribution of the work presented in this dissertation is to provides a detailed insight into the physics of spray autoignition at diesel engine conditions, to propose and derive original methods for incorporating droplet evaporation effects within CMC in a physically-sound manner, and to assess the applicability and shortcomings of the CMC method to autoigniting sprays.

Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of combustion processes in internal combustion engines, including also the formation of pollutants, has become increasingly important in the recent years, and today the simulation of those processes has already become an indispensable tool when - veloping new combustion concepts. While pure thermodynamic models are well-established tools that are in use for the simulation of the transient behavior of complex systems for a long time, the phenomenological models have become more important in the recent years and have also been implemented in these simulation programs. In contrast to this, the thr- dimensional simulation of in-cylinder combustion, i. e. the detailed, integrated and continuous simulation of the process chain injection, mixture formation, ignition, heat release due to combustion and formation of pollutants, has been significantly improved, but there is still a number of challenging problems to solve, regarding for example the exact description of s- processes like the structure of turbulence during combustion as well as the appropriate choice of the numerical grid. While chapter 2 includes a short introduction of functionality and operating modes of internal combustion engines, the basics of kinetic reactions are presented in chapter 3. In chapter 4 the physical and chemical processes taking place in the combustion chamber are described. Ch- ter 5 is about phenomenological multi-zone models, and in chapter 6 the formation of poll- ants is described.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art models for turbulent combustion, with special emphasis on the theory, development and applications of combustion models in practical combustion systems. It simplifies the complex multi-scale and nonlinear interaction between chemistry and turbulence to allow a broader audience to understand the modeling and numerical simulations of turbulent combustion, which remains at the forefront of research due to its industrial relevance. Further, the book provides a holistic view by covering a diverse range of basic and advanced topics—from the fundamentals of turbulence–chemistry interactions, role of high-performance computing in combustion simulations, and optimization and reduction techniques for chemical kinetics, to state-of-the-art modeling strategies for turbulent premixed and nonpremixed combustion and their applications in engineering contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The homogeneous charge, compression-ignition (HCCI) combustion process has the potential to significantly reduce NOx and particulate emissions, while achieving high thermal efficiency and the capability of operating with a wide variety of fuels. This makes the HCCI engine an attractive technology that can ostensibly provide diesel-like fuel efficiency and very low emissions, which may allow emissions compliance to occur without relying on lean aftertreatment systems. A profound increase in the level of research and development of this technology has occurred in the last decade. This book gathers contributions from experts in both industry and academia, providing a basic introduction to the state-of-the-art of HCCI technology, a critical review of current HCCI research and development efforts, and perspective for the future. Chapters cover: Gasoline-Fueled HCCI Engines; Diesel-Fueled HCCI Engines; Alternative Fuels and Fuel Additives for HCCI Engines; HCCI Control and Operating Range Extension; Kinetics of HCCI Combustion; HCCI Engine Modeling Approaches. In addition to the extensive overview of terminology, physical processes, and future needs, each chapter also features select SAE papers (a total of 41 are included in the book), as well as a comprehensive list of references related to the subjects. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engines: Key Research and Development Issues provides a valuable base of information for those interested in learning about this rapidly-progressing technology which has the potential to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions.
