Book excerpt: Threee-dimensional transonic flow over a delta wing is investigated with a focus on the effect of transition and influence of turbulence stress anisotropies. The performance of linear eddy viscosity models and an explicit algebraic stress model is assessed at the start of the vortex flow, and the results compared with experimental data. To assess the effect of transition location, computations that either fix transition or are fully turbulent are performed. To assess the effect of the turbulent stress ansiotropy, comparisons are made between predictions from the algebraic stress model and the linear eddy viscosity models. Both transition location and turbulent stress anisotropy significantly affect the 3D flow field. The most significant effect is found to be the modeling of transition location. At a Mach number of 0.90, the computed solution changes character from steady to unsteady depending on transition onset. Accounting for the anisotropies in the turbulent stresses also considerably impacts the flow, most notably in the outboard region of flow separation.

Book excerpt: Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: To improve accuracy of CFD simulations by combating numerical viscosity, the vorticity confinement (VC) approach was applied to tip vortices shed by stationary wings for the prediction of induced drag by far-field integration in Trefftz plane as well as the simulation of tip vortex evolution. Vorticity confinement schemes are first evaluated and compared using 2D Euler simulation of a Taylor vortex. The effect of numerical dissipation is shown to cause the vortex to spread and decay without the presence of physical dissipative terms; VC counteracts this effect and maintains the vortex strength. For 3D simulations, the coefficient of confinement was determined for various flight parameters. Dependence of vorticity confinement parameter on the flight Mach number and the angle of attack was evaluated. The aerodynamic drag results with VC are much closer to analytic lifting line theory compared to integration over surface of wing. To apply VC to viscous and turbulent flows, it is shown that in many cases VC does not affect the physical rate of dissipation of line vortices for temporal and viscous scales relevant to wingtip vortex simulations. VC was applied to the simulation turbulent wingtip vortices originating from fixed and rotating wings. The six Reynolds stress turbulence model combined with VC most accurately matched experimental results of tip vortex evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop vortex methods for numerical simulation of multi-dimensional, time-dependent turbulent chemically-reacting flows with high temporal and spatial accuracy. Of particular interest is turbulent shear flows associated with the propagation of turbulent flames in combustion systems. Vortex methods are developed and incorporated in a numerical simulations of turbulent reacting flow, and applied to study the propagation and stability of turbulent flames in different geometrical configurations. At high Damkohler number, a dynamic thin flame model is used, while for slower reactions, the vortex scheme is extended to solve the energy and species equations with finite rate chemical reaction in a Lagrangian particle form. Results have been obtained for a confined mixing layer, a recirculating flow over a rearward facing step, and a confined shallow cavity. Detailed analyses have been performed to validate the numerical schemes and to study the structure and stability of these flows. The scheme has been extended to three dimension flow and an investigation of the transition to turbulence in an axisymmetric shear layer has been initiated. Currently, the combustion algorithms. Are being linked to the vortex simulation to predict the interaction between the turbulent field and the burning process. Keywords: Turbulent combustion.
