Excerpt: ... which, being the principle of evil, is passionate in nature. Thus the divinity forgets himself, busies himself with matter, and comes to desire it, so that he is thereby "split" or divided. The result of this is that the "creator of Being" becomes "the creator of Essence," and forms the world of matter. This philosophical statement is more intelligible if interpreted by the more modern conception of divine love. Love is self-forgetful; and the Supreme allows his attention to wander by the mere fact that he is the Good,27 and thinks of the second divinity with "longing."28 He is "fatherly."29 drawing up matter to himself through that same emotion. CHAPTER VI. The Second Divinity ORIGIN OF THE SECOND DIVINITY. As the First Divinity is being, the second divinity is essence, "the divinity that is becoming," the divine immanence, inasmuch as he imitates the First, being analogous to him.1 So he remains contemplative or intellectual.2 That is why he is the "offspring"8 of the grandfather.4 Through this thoughtful contemplation, it is that he derives all his coloring and goodness.5 Ueberweg6 insists that this deification of the second principle was Numenius' most remarkable deviation from Plato, albeit Numenius himself remained unconscious of it; indeed, he even attributed this his doctrine to Socrates.7 Though this second divinity remains intelligible,8 still he becomes double and creates (in the very same manner as the creator of being was the Idea of being), first the Idea of himself, the creator of becoming; and second, the "beautiful world"9 of the Ideas. This makes of him the principle of becoming, inasmuch as he deposits, or unfolds, his own Being in the...

Book Synopsis Imitation, Knowledge, and the Task of Christology in Maximus the Confessor by : Luke Steven
Download or read book Imitation, Knowledge, and the Task of Christology in Maximus the Confessor written by Luke Steven and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maximus the Confessor's combustive historical era, committed doctrinal reflection, and loud and influential voice took him on a turbulent career of traveling and writing around the Mediterranean. Maximus was a spiritual teacher, an ascetic and a contemplative, but he was also a polemicist, a crafter of dogma, an embattled Christologian, a premeditating rhetorician. In this study, Luke Steven binds together these two disparate sides of the man and his writings by showing that throughout his oeuvre the Confessor positions imitation as the key to knowledge. This lasting epistemology characterizes his earlier ascetic and spiritual works, and in his later works it prominently defines his dogmatic Christological method – that is, the means by which he communicates and persuades and brings people to understand and encounter Jesus Christ, the one with two natures, divine and human. This multifaceted study offers a deep assessment of Maximus’s forebears, new insight on the animating assumptions of his thought, and an unprecedented focus on the rhetoric and method of his christological writings.

Book Synopsis Imagining God by : Humberto Casanova
Download or read book Imagining God written by Humberto Casanova and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ever-growing number of Christians are becoming more and more uncomfortable with the tenets of the church, the stories of the Bible, and the church’s worldview. Statistics show that these feelings easily escalate into a crisis of faith, and for now their predicament is being resolved by leaving the church. This book will certainly help dealing with the crisis by showing that the language of faith is built by a web of metaphors taken from the Ancient Near East. We do not need to take biblical language literally, but as parables for human values in need to be assessed critically.
