This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parra-Luna (politics and sociology, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) presents 18 contributions which attempt to build models that can measure and analyze output/input quotients of global efficiency (i.e., satisfaction in goals) in the study of complex social systems--a topic which he argues has been incomprehensibly ignored by the social sciences. The papers are organized into sections on the definition of values, models for defining social performance, and operational approaches to the concept of social performance. Some articles explore the topic from the perspective of the global system, while others focus on specific areas within the social system. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis The Provoked Economy by : Fabian Muniesa
Download or read book The Provoked Economy written by Fabian Muniesa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do things such as performance indicators, valuation formulas, consumer tests, stock prices or financial contracts represent an external reality? Or do they rather constitute, in a performative fashion, what they refer to? The Provoked Economy tackles this question from a pragmatist angle, considering economic reality as a ceaselessly provoked reality. It takes the reader through a series of diverse empirical sites – from public administrations to stock exchanges, from investment banks to marketing facilities and business schools – in order to explore what can be seen from such a demanding standpoint. It demonstrates that descriptions of economic objects do actually produce economic objects and that the simulacrum of an economic act is indeed a form of realization. It also shows that provoking economic reality means facing practical tests in which what ought to be economic or not is subject to elaboration and controversy. This book opens paths for empirical investigation in the social sciences, but also for the philosophical renewal of the critique of economic reality. It will be useful for students and scholars in social theory, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and economics.

Book Synopsis Made in Puerto Rico by : Hugo R. Viera-Vargas
Download or read book Made in Puerto Rico written by Hugo R. Viera-Vargas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Made in Puerto Rico: Studies in Popular Music serves as a comprehensive introduction to the history, culture, and musicology of 20th and 21st century popular music in Puerto Rico. The essays in this volume, written by both local experts and leading scholars, contextualize under-researched areas of Puerto Rican popular music-making in relation to ideologies, aesthetics, and symbolism, and propose new ways of thinking about Puerto Rican musical cultures. A groundbreaking introduction to Puerto Rican musical culture, the volume covers the major figures, styles, and social contexts of popular music in Puerto Rico, while also going beyond conventional narratives. Rather than simply providing histories of key genres, these insightful essays focus on the ways in which Puerto Rican musicians reimagine their distinctive musical language as it transmutes from local practices into global expressions. Offering both a survey of Puerto Rican popular music and pathways into deeper critical inquiry, Made in Puerto Rico is an essential resource for scholars and students of music and of Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, and African Diaspora Studies.
Book Synopsis Dwellers of Memory by : Pilar Riano-Alcala
Download or read book Dwellers of Memory written by Pilar Riano-Alcala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dwellers of Memory is an ethnographic study of how urban youth in Colombia came to be at the intersection of multiple forms of political, drug-related, and territorial violence in a country undergoing forty years of internal armed conflict. It examines the ways in which youth in the city of Medellin reconfigure their lives and, cultural worlds in the face of widespread violence. This violence has transgressed familiar boundaries and destroyed basic social supports and networks of trust. This volume attempts to map and understand its patterns and flows. The author explores how Medellin's youth locate themselves and make, sense of violence through contradictory and shifting memory practices. The violence has not completely taken over their cultural worlds or their subjectivities. Practices of remembering and forgetting are key methods by which these youth rework their identities and make sense of the impact of violence on their lives. While the experience of violence is rooted in urban space and urban youth, the memory dwellers use a sense of place, oral histories of death, and narratives of fear as survival strategies for inhabiting violent neighborhoods. The book also examines fissures in memory, the contradictory constructions of young people's subjective selves, and practices of gendered violence and terror. All have and continue to pose risks to the historical memory and cultural survival of the residents of Medellin. Dwellers of Memory offers an alternative ethnographic approach to the study of memory and violence, one that calls into question whether the, role of the ethnographer of violence is to be a mere witness of terror, or to oppose it by writing against it. It will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, and students of, ethnography.
Book Synopsis Made-to-Measure Future(s) for Democracy? by : Julen Zabalo
Download or read book Made-to-Measure Future(s) for Democracy? written by Julen Zabalo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume analyses the development of democracy at different levels of governance (from local to global). The Basque search for an institutional and democratic model that adapts to its social needs and solves its problems offers an interesting perspective for analyzing the way in which democracy is seeking new forms of materialization from the local to the global. The volume is divided into four parts. The chapters in Part I analyze the tensions between the neoliberal vision of democracy and the voices contesting it, with projections at different levels of government. The chapters in Part II focus on the emerging framework and scales of Western democracy. The chapters in Part III present new forms of citizen participation, paying special - though not exclusive - attention to new practical strategies for Basque society. The volume concludes with a block of chapters on the relevance of reviewing the methodological and epistemological frameworks from which knowledge about democracy and mechanisms of citizen participation is generated (Part IV). By delving deeper into the idea and practice of democratic governance, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students from all disciplines of politics, international relations, sociology and law.

Book Synopsis Legal Culture in the Age of Globalization by : Lawrence Friedman
Download or read book Legal Culture in the Age of Globalization written by Lawrence Friedman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-09 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays examines how the legal systems of the chief countries of Latin America and Mediterranean Europe—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, France, Italy, and Spain—changed in the last quarter of the 20th century. Through essays that provide a wealth of data on the courts and the legal profession in these countries, the book attempts to relate changes in the operation of the legal systems to changes in the political and social history of the societies in which they are embedded. The details vary, in accordance with the particular history and structure of the countries, but there are also key commonalities that run through all of the stories: democratization, globalization, and changes in the legal order that seem to be worldwide; more power to courts; a growing legal profession; and the entry of women into what was once a masculine club.

This book was released on with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrosophy as science has inclusive attributes that make possible to extract the contributions of neutral values in the analysis of data sets; it builds a unified field of logic for transdisciplinary studies that transcend the boundaries between natural and social sciences. Neutral philosophy seeks to solve the problems of indeterminacy that appear universally, to reform the current natural or social sciences, with an open methodology to promote innovation. The research products related in this special issue start from the premise that the difficulty is not the complexity of the social environment, but the instrumental obsolescence to observe, interpret and manage that complexity, there are bold approaches and proposals for valid solutions that come to enrich the universe of resolution through the use of neutral methods. In the last year, the use of tools related to neutrosophy and its application to the social sciences, modeling of social phenomena based on simulation agents, problems associated with health, psychology, education, environmental management and sustainability solutions and legal sciences has increased in the events organized by the Asociacion Latinoamericana de Ciencias Neutrosoficas (ALCN in Spanish). The methods of higher incidence are cognitive maps, neutral Iadovs, neutral Delphi, analytical hierarchy process methods, neutral statistics, neutral personality models, among the most significant. In this special issue, there is a predominance of research from Ecuadorian universities, demonstrating how neutrosophy and its methods are consolidated as instruments of analysis, inference and research validation.
