Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by sixteen of Canada's pioneering nuclear scientists, the book focuses on Canada's nuclear program at AECL's laboratories at Chalk River, Ontario, and Whiteshell, Manitoba, between the years 1943 and 1985. Topics include the organization and operations of AECL's laboratories, nuclear safety and radiation protection, radioisotopes, basic research, development of the CANDU reactor, and the management of radioactive wastes. As well as providing a valuable historical perspective on Canadian science, Canada Enters the Nuclear Age offers useful guidance for innovative scientific development in the future, a future that will depend on developing and nurturing technically sophisticated industry.

Book Synopsis The Science and Technology of Coal and Coal Utilization by : Bernard Cooper
Download or read book The Science and Technology of Coal and Coal Utilization written by Bernard Cooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the need for new and improved energy sources is an area where societal effects of science and technology will surely increase. The editors and authors have attempted in this volume to present the most current work on the science and technology of coal and coal utilization. Serious disagreement exists on several key issues such as carbon dioxide release and acid rain. At the same time, however, coal is the world's most abundant fossil fuel and will have to be used to supply the world's energy needs for the next several decades. The 1979 National Research Council Report, "En ergy in Transition: 1985-2010," has estimated that the United States alone may go from a 1979 coal consumption of 14 QUADS per annum (approximately 750 million tons per year) to approximately 40-50 QUADS per annum (approximately 2 billion tons per year) by the year 2010. If this scale of coal utilization is to become a reality, a significant level of research and development will be necessary to establish advanced process technologies and to improve related areas such as materials and instrumentation. The editors hope that this volume will allow a technically educated person to become aware of the several aspects of coal utilization, from characterization of coal itself to the processes of coal utilization. Book Synopsis Safety, Reliability, Human Factors, and Human Error in Nuclear Power Plants by : B.S. Dhillon
Download or read book Safety, Reliability, Human Factors, and Human Error in Nuclear Power Plants written by B.S. Dhillon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year billions of dollars are being spent in the area of nuclear power generation to design, construct, manufacture, operate, and maintain various types of systems around the globe. Many times these systems fail due to safety, reliability, human factors, and human error related problems. The main objective of this book is to combine nuclear power plant safety, reliability, human factors, and human error into a single volume for those individuals that work closely during the nuclear power plant design phase, as well as other phases, thus eliminating the need to consult many different and diverse sources in obtaining the desired information.
