However, it is the commonality of interests, difficulties, and prospects across all of physics, along with certain pivotal advances, which led to the organization of an interdisciplinary Workshop on Momentum Distributions held at Argonne National Laboratory on October 24--26, 1988. The purpose of this overview is to explain why scientists with such diverse backgrounds have been brought together at this meeting, to introduce and discuss the common elements of momentum-distribution studies, and to establish a common language. We hope to facilitate an appreciation of the more specialized articles which follow in these proceedings. We begin by summarizing the general properties of momentum distributions. Differences and similarities of atomic, electronic, and nuclear many-body systems are examined, in terms of characteristic lengths and energies, relative importance of exchange, and the nature of the two-particle interactions. We continue with a brief commentary on the microscopic methods used to calculate n(p) from first principles. Thereafter, the discussion focuses on the ideas, techniques, and issues involved in the experimental determination of the momentum distribution: deep-inelastic scattering, the impulse approximation, Y-scaling, final-state effects, and scale breaking. Finally, some typical examples of theoretical and experimental momentum distributions will be presented and compared, for a variety of systems. 63 refs., 16 figs.

The Nucleon Momentum Distributions (NMD) and elastic electron scattering form factors of the ground state for 1p-shell nuclei have been calculated in the framework of the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model (CDFM) and expressed in terms of the weight function. The feature of the long-tail behavior at high momentum region of the NMD has been obtained by both the theoretical and experimental weight functions on contrary to the results of the NMD calculated in the shell model by taking Fourier transform to the harmonic oscillator wave functions that are mainly characterized by the steep slope behavior at high momentum values. The experimental form factors of all considered nuclei are very well reproduced by the present calculations throughout all values of momentum transfer q. It is found that the contributions of the quadrupole form factors, which are described by the undeformed p-shell model, are essential in obtaining a remarkable agreement between the theoretical and experimental form factors.

Book excerpt: This paper considers from a simple physical point of view the Mossbauer effect, i. e., the 'recoilless emission' of gamma-rays from a nucleur bound in a crystal lattice. It begins with a discussion of the kinematics of gamma-ray emission from such a nucleus. The idealized case of a massive 'lattice' characterized by a single frequency and the more realistic one and three-dimensional models are treated. We point up the fact that in the Mossbauer effect the lattice as a whole (the lattice center of mass) always recoils after photon emission, so that the term 'recoilless emission' is in one sense misleading. We emphasize that the essence of the Mossbauer effect is not photon emission without recoil, but rather is photon emission without transfer of energy to internal degrees of freedom of the lattice. Using the basic ideas of quantum mechanics, namely, the rules for the manipulation of probability amplitudes (the socalled 'transformation theory'), we calculate the probability for recoil without excitation of internal degrees of freedom, i. e., the Mossbauer f-factor, on the assumption that the individual photon emissions, consequent lattice recoil, are instantaneous. In Appendix A we discuss this question of instantaneous emission in some detail, and show how it is not in contradiction with the fact that the nuclear transition that leads to the gamma-ray emission has a finite half-width. In Appendix B those rules of transformation theory that are used in the body of the paper are summarized. (Author).
